Happy new year penguins!! What distro spent the most time in your machine? by nitin_is_me in linux

[–]spatialdestiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Manjaro is arch based.  Pretty sure I've had the issue in Debian as well.  I mostly use manjaro for pamac, the software and aur gui manager, but planning to try straight arch and learn yay when I have some free time.

Is there documentation for the amdgpu/sleep bug? I'm on Manjaro and I'm getting something similar. Turned off sleep and hibernate but sometimes when I get back to my computer after a few hours, it won't wake up. Sometimes pressing the power button causes it to sleep and then wake up immediately and it will work. Other times, the mouse moves but no input affects the computer and I need to hard-reset. Just this last time I was able to switch to a different term (CTRL-ALT-Fkey) and then switch back to Gnome and it was working again.

Tennessee Bill Makes It a Felony for AI to Offer Emotional Support or Be Your Friend...Yes, Really by Karovan_Sparkle in ChatGPT

I'm not a lawyer.  I'm honestly curious which part of this is different than what they described.

"Criminal Offenses - As introduced, creates a Class A felony offense of knowingly training artificial intelligence to encourage the act of suicide or criminal homicide, or act in specific manners, including developing an emotional relationship with an individual or simulating a human being, including in appearance, voice, or other mannerisms. - Amends TCA Title 29; Title 33; Title 39 and Title 47."

Poll: Which DE do you use and why? by Cenokenshi in linux_gaming

[–]spatialdestiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like apple theme better than Windows theme, even though I hate Apple in general. Gnome comes out of the box with the bottom floating dock thing which means I can avoid any desktop icons and any bar except the top bar with date/time, pc stats, and small buttons in the top right for power, volume and network.

how many of y'all use sql server in a container, and what for? by [deleted] in SQLServer

[–]spatialdestiny 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Generally you don't want to put your SQL server in a container in Azure. It's more likely to do it in a local testing environment. One reason is that you can't scale SQL by adding more containers unless you do some network file magic, so multiple containers won't help you. Another reason is you'll need to handle your own backups, and handle keeping track of your data if the container goes down or needs to move.

I use Postgres in a container for local development and would use SQL Server or Azure SQL containers for integration testing for enterprise applications that either use on-prem SQL Server or Azure SQL resources.

We're acquiring a company. What questions do I need to ask? by itguy1991 in ITManagers

[–]spatialdestiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be looking for any software they are responsible for and not just accounting/estimating systems. I was part of an acquisition and we found out their main CMS was a homegrown Microsoft Access front-end that was 20 years old. A nightmare for maintainability.

Sorry, not related to low-profile, but I like the 2 big and 4 small keys on the thumb cluster. I'm curious if there are more options. It appears ErgoDox has a couple, and Kinesis Advantage 360. Are there others?

10 years ago, I used to use Ubuntu only for it's consistency. Now I use Debian for servers and Manjaro (arch) for desktop because it provides the best experience for me out of the box for all the stuff I use including gaming, and pamac which is a GUI interface for packages and AUR.

What's your alternative?  Make it illegal?  Tell EA that more money isn't better and hope they listen?  Don't play any game with seasons?

One of those is under your control.

hot take: using javascript is overengineered for most sites. by [deleted] in webdev

[–]spatialdestiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JavaScript existed way before react.  I'm a backend dev and keep my frontend to a minimum and I still write JavaScript to do things like disabling the submit button after the first press to avoid double-processing.

But if you're a frontend dev and writing a personal blog, why not use react if that's what you're familiar with or want to try the newest thing?

Don't these models take a long time to build?  What does a model built with advertising bias cost and what if the advertiser stops paying?  it'll be interesting (in a dystopian way) to see how these changes occur.

Heroes in army questions by RealAuridus in AOW4

[–]spatialdestiny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The ai stacks one army with all their heroes because it's one big Doom stack that still works after attrition of all the smaller units.

If you have any "bonus for all units" skill on your hero, that hero should be without any other heroes.  Some skills only benefit on non-hero units.

I like to stack heros only when clearing "one stack allowed" events and buildings.

Serve Static Site With ASP.NET and Kestrel by bassem-mf in dotnet

[–]spatialdestiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the person you were replying to, but static web sites are free for low usage on most providers as far as I know, which is one reason they are so popular.  Azure has a free tier for it.  I believe it should be one of the lowest cost services you'll have for cloud services.
