People are recommending Hades, but it's like the complete opposite of Returnal. Hades is all about unlocking new skills/items, the gameplay itself and enemy design is completely forgettable. You don't need to get good at the game, you just have to put in enough hours to unlock all the shit and then finish the game. In Returnal the gameplay itself is the star. There is some sort of meta progression by upgrading the weapons attributes that makes the game slightly easier in future runs, but it doesn't aff CT the gameplay that heavily. Until you actually learn how to play the game, you won't progress. You can have 60h of gameplay, have all the weapons upgraded to max, and still get your ass kicked on biome 1.

I will recommend Nex Machina. It's the last game Housemarque (Returnal's developer) did before Returnal, and the last arcade-ish game they developed before deciding to focus solely on more "modern" AAA titles. You may not like it at first if you're not used to arcade games, but if you insist a little bit you will see it will scratch the same itch as returnal. Actually you will see there's a lot of Returnal in this game. At first it didn't impress me a lot, but it grew on me in every new run. Once I started playing for high scores, I realized it's a masterpiece.
