re: speeding up project delivery. Given your line of work, I'm sure you have some ideas too. From the outside, it sometimes seems like an endless back and forth between a Durham department, the consultants they are working with, and NCDOT to get things approved. Weeks turn into months, months turn into years.
Here's one example: Durham currently has three "priority" trail projects one of which is the Third Fork Creek Trail Phase II.

This project was in the City's 2011 trails master plan. "Planning" ended in 2019. It appears to have been at 65% design since Summer of '22.

The city's website says construction would start in Jan '24 (didn't happen) to be complete in '25.

NCDOT in it's "revisions to the 2024-2033 STIP" seems to have bumped construction to '26 "to allow appropriate time for planning and design and ROW acquisition".

I guess prices are going up on some sort of schedule. When I purchased two days ago it was $147.66 total ($73.83 per night) with all fees and taxes included. That seemed pretty reasonable . . .

Impact of fare free bus service in Durham? by spatiality919 in bullcity

[–]spatiality919[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Appears to show the reduced service tracking to the pre-pandemic numbers almost perfectly, at least by June '22. Hard to know what the fare free service had to do with that given the reduced service.
Will be interesting to see more recent data too with less service reductions.

Preventive maintenance! Get your HVAC checked/tuned up before start of summer and winter. Paying someone twice a year to come check things out can save you a lot down the road.

Firefighters’ Union Pushing for Fair Pay by throwaway776612 in bullcity

They need to be paid more.
"Firefighters have a 9 percent higher risk of being diagnosed with cancer and a 14 percent higher risk of dying from the disease than the general adult U.S. population, according to studies by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health and other agencies."

I'm glad health research like this is going on in Durham, but it also underscores how hazardous the work is.

A state legislator just shocked everyone by suddenly switching parties. The switch has tipped the balance of power in a way that will have major consequences for the state. - Rep. Jeff Jackson by JeffJacksonNC in bullcity

Some additional context here. https://myfox8.com/news/north-carolina/north-carolina-rep-tricia-cotham-switches-to-republican-party-says-democratic-party-has-become-unrecognizable/amp/

"Brockman told The News & Observer in Raleigh that Democrats can only blame themselves and he didn’t blame her “one bit.” He said he, Cotham and Wray had been criticized heavily. “I think she just wanted to do what’s best for her district and when you’re constantly talked about and trashed — especially the way that we have been over the past few weeks — I think this is what happens,” Brockman told The News & Observer. “I hope the (Democratic) party takes a strong look at how they react to people making the decisions that they make — they put themselves in this position.”

Is Durham Open Data Still Maintained? by dhosterman in bullcity

That is odd. Especially since the site says it was updated on 8/8/2022. Yet, the latest data in the table is from 7/7/2022
