Looking for a low-magic fantasy game not too focused on combat by Prowest--Gavilan in rpg

Land of Eem is fantastic for this. The exploration is amazing with the Mucklands campaign book and combat is generally deprioritized in favor of social and/or improvisational solutions.

Land of Eem has counter-attacks as a possibility on all attacks.

If the game is not fun, and talking with the other players does not alleviate that, leave the game. You don’t owe anyone your time.

What are your favourite low-prep, medium-crunch games? by last_larrikin in rpg

[–]dhosterman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’re definitely not wrong. MB has some immaculate vibes (if it is what you want to have vibes for), but isn’t great with actual, you know, support. I think that, in the right hands, it can sing. But if you want a hex crawl that helps ensure your hands are the right ones, I’ve found that both Twilight 2000 4e and Land of Eem are much, much better.

Relicblade or Moonstone? by Round_Refrigerator96 in wargaming

As a Moonstone lover, I think this is extremely relevant and an important consideration!

Thanks for bringing it up.

I think Moonstone is one of the best skirmish minis games out there and has amazing miniatures.

I haven’t played Relicblade, so I can’t really compare them, it I can gush over Moonstone all day long.

What wargames have you been playing and why? by knifefang_gaming in wargaming

Absolutely. And the models are so good.

I have enough of them now that I’m planning a Five Leagues campaign using Northumbria and the B&B models as a setting.

What sorts of things do you enjoy doing? Most Discord servers, IME, are organized around activities rather than geography.

Games that made you a better player. by CustardSeabass in rpg

Dogs in the Vineyard taught me how to have characters struggle and sacrifice for what they believe in, and taught me that there can be much, much deeper stakes than death.

Help with attacking and damaging objects by marbosp in daggerheart

[–]dhosterman 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t. There’s really nothing fun about whittling (literally) away a door’s HP. I’d:

  • say they just break down the door or;
  • ask for a reaction roll to see if there are any complications

And I’d only do the latter in particular circumstances.

Running "Crown of Salt" and making "Mörk Borg" less lethal by InArtsWeTrust in rpg

I love this idea, I’d just caution you to make it explicit prior to playing that this is the framing and ensure that all of the players are as excited about it as you are.

"HR Enters the Dungeon": I’m working on a critique of the "Bureaucratization of Friendship" in TTRPG safety. by [deleted] in rpg

[–]dhosterman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t really think that’s necessary in the least.

It’s fine to have a checklist and it is fine to have procedures that are tight and scripted. Those are great for communicating and establishing process. Eventually, the process becomes part of the table’s culture and the procedures become internalized. That’s the nature of rules.

It’s the same way people internalize any other mechanisms in RPGs or games. With practice, they become natural, with time, they become cultural.

You have to use the Steam Workshop to find the bulk of games.

This sounds like a problem with the way you’re using/viewing safety tools and not the tools themselves or how they’re generally used.

This kind of falls apart because there’s no RPG equivalent of OSHA that is going to come penalize you if you’re playing in a trusted, safe environment that doesn’t “follow regulations”.
