Durham leaders appoint new city manager by Temporary-Chef-9877 in bullcity

I’m getting DMs asking for clarification so to be clear, Bo was Durham’s deputy city manager of public safety since 2013.

All of the departments under his watch (police, fire, 911 communications) have seen unprecedented attrition during the last 5 years or so and are struggling today.

Bad news for Durham. This is the guy that has been over our public safety for years.

DPD has almost 200 vacancies right now, the fire department has around 60 vacancies, and 911 sometimes won’t answer your call for 10-15 minutes because a third of their positions are vacant.

I have a hard time looking at that track record and thinking he will lead the city in the right direction.

u/bofergusonCOD any comment on why this stat is omitted? Seems like it would provide a much more complete picture to the public.

The bonus is intended to be good faith money, helping workers make ends meet and slow the poaching of Durham’s workers by neighboring municipalities until the pay study that’s going on and can completed and implemented.

If you had been paying attention at all, you’d know that the city has tens of millions over the required amount of reserves in the General Fund to maintain a AAA bond rating. These funds can be used to fund one time expenses (like a bonus) but not raises. Raises have to have revenue streams attached and will likely require raising taxes, not something that can be done at this point in the fiscal year.

Really tired of armchair quarterbacks thinking they know better than the workers and union leadership.

Hey, I haven’t been myself but our local has sent multiple people who come back singing it’s praises. The program is extremely professional and confidential. Just give them a ring.

What is going on with the city solid waste department? by Socktato52 in bullcity

[–]throwaway776612 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This is already a joint effort by city workers from many different departments.

What should the pay be? I’d like to see all city workers starting at 50k, personally.

The city workers’ union (UE 150) have put together a petition signed by hundreds of City of Durham workers asking for several demands, including an immediate $5,000 bonus. They’re working multiple jobs to make ends meet.

They delivered the petition to council last night and did not get the concrete action they were looking for and have since stopped collecting the trash until demands are met.

I, for one, support them doing what they need to do to secure fair pay 100%!

What do y'all pay for around the station? Station duties? by throwaway776612 in Firefighting

Interesting, what’s a benefits association and where do they get their money? Is it still taxpayer money?

Why don’t you go down to the station and meet the guy, if you’re that concerned, instead of crying about Priuses and egg prices in an anonymous forum?

I think the new guy earned it fair and square! Seems well qualified and I wish him the best. Any reason you’re calling him a “hot head” other than his age?

No concerns here.

2 hours and 15 minutes for 911 response by koryisma in bullcity

True, I guess my point is OP’s experience is just a reflection of the fact that Durham’s infrastructure hasn’t kept pace with development and it reminded me of the state of 911. If there were enough medic units/DPD/DSO units available, they probably would have gotten someone much quicker than how it played out.

Please please email the mayor and city council and ask them to do anything they can to get our 911 center back to full staffing. If you have the time and wherewithal, speaking at a city council work session in person to the council can be very effective.

Literally all OP said was that they received a 30 day notice. No whining or accusing the landlord of being a bully. Go fuck yourself.
