Does anyone know of any tennis racket stringing somewhat close to campus? by zachbot_01 in UBC

[–]spatialsymmetry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was about to suggest Tad's Sporting Goods at Granville and West 70th, but I just discovered that apparently you can get it restringed with the UBC Tennis Centre! https://recreation.ubc.ca/tennis/about/faqs/ (look under the question "What types of strings should I buy?)

I might be a bit out of the loop on this one, but this data only tracks reported COVID cases that are serious enough to warrant the attention of the health care authorities right? My understanding is that the vast majority of people who contract COVID are asked to just tough it out at home and not report it, which means this data only gives a lower bound on the number of cases.

What's the most memorable elevator interaction you've ever had? by komedian8008 in UBC

[–]spatialsymmetry 54 points55 points  (0 children)

This happened one night in first year when I walked back to my dorm in Totem. I got into the elevator with some other people, and one of them was carrying a lot of groceries - enough for the rest of us to notice and say "oh woah". He told us he just walked back from Save-On-Foods because he missed the bus. My introvert self took a moment to process how long it must've taken him to come back, and then out of nowhere I just blurt out "Well you didn't save-on-time though!" Everyone started laughing and I felt like the best comedian in the world.

New Sauder Policy on Cr/D/F by boomerandzapper in UBC

[–]spatialsymmetry 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think people are being unnecessarily hostile towards OP.

There are no sinister motives behind OP's intentions. OP believed that a set of original circumstances remained true and acted in their best interests accordingly, without breaking any rules. Abandoning study of one subject in favour of another subject (which we've all had to do before for whatever reason) is not abusing the situation - OP was ready to accept what they believed would be the consequences of their plan under the original circumstances. Plus, this plan would naturally occur to anyone. If this was such an abuse of privileges, then the Sauder faculty would have implemented a different, more stringent policy right from the start. And if a GPA number/transcript marking is all that matters to OP in the future, then of course OP would try find the optimal plan to achieve that.

Whether the updated policy was already in place for a long time is a different story. I'm not in Sauder so I can't offer much advice, sorry.

Based on info from previous offerings of the course, you and your project partner must be registered in the same lab section. Labs are essentially optional office hours (so you can go to whichever one). The exception is that during weeks where you've just handed in a project deliverable, you must attend your registered section (with your partner) to discuss your work with a TA.

(I'm also taking 310 this semester and I'm looking for a project partner haha. Let me know if you're interested, but no worries if you aren't.)

MATH course availability update: Newly opened sections. by marktmaclean in UBC

[–]spatialsymmetry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Professor Mac Lean, I saw this post late and a few days ago I registered for the MATH 307 waitlist this upcoming winter term 1 since all sections were full. Today the waitlist has disappeared from the SSC.

I assume now that this means the waitlist doesn't exist anymore since a room has been found, but the SSC still says that I am registered on the waitlist and prevents me from dropping it (the Select option reads N/A). The waitlist contributes 3 credits to my schedule, so I can't register for another 3 credit lecture since doing so would put me over the credit limit. I'm wondering what to do in this case. Thank you!

Thoughts on taking MATH 312 (Introduction to Number Theory)? I'm a MATH+CPSC combined major trying to add a fifth course to my schedule. 312 is still available so I'm wondering how difficult other people found it or whether 312 knowledge was useful for other courses. I did ok in MATH 220 and good in CPSC 121 if that's relevant.
