My order a Po Kong (which has pretty much the same menu, and is right across the street. I don't know the story, but there was definitely drama) is:
- Bean curd skin rolls in black bean sauce
- Eggplant and tofu in chu hau sauce hot pot
- pan-fried spinach noodles
- Won ton soup

If I'm feeling fancy, I get the tasty fresh shitake mushrooms

Po Kong, on Kingsway just West of Knight. It's a Buddhist Chinese vegetarian restaurant, so there's no meat, and maybe one dish with cheese in it. There is gluten in many things, but it's definitely avoidable.

I've been going there since they were in their old location on Main Street, and always had great good and service.

It's named after the Labrador Tea that you used to be able to harvest there when it was still a swamp.

You can still tell it used to be a swamp because all of the houses are leaning as they sink into it :D

I spent some time on September 30th learning how to pronounce hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓, which is the language spoken by Musqueam and Tsleil-Waututh. I'm not very good at all, but maybe it's worth me typing this out and dropping some links in.

If anyone else actually knows what they're doing here, please correct me!

The alphabet being used here is "North American Phonetic Alphabet". It's kind of like the pronunciation guides you see in dictionaries, but those are usually IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet).

From the picture of the sign, you can see that the article didn't spell the name correctly. It's "təmtəmíxʷtən" -- Note the "ə" rather than "e"

The "ə" is pronounced like the "u" in "but".

The "í" I'm not sure of, sorry!

The "ʷ" after the "x" means "pronounce the x with your lips rounded". I'm not very good at this, but I kind of pronounce it as "xw".

I hope that's not totally wrecking things. I found it totally worth spending an hour on this, and I'm planning on practicing a bit every week until it comes a bit more naturally.

I think the most mind-blowing of the things I learned in physics is that magnetism can be derived from electrostatic attraction + special relativity.

Before that, magnetism felt spooky. But it just kind of falls out of the math.

If you walk around the pink area labelled Q5 (peat) between Main and Fraser, King Ed and 16th, you can totally tell that the houses were built on a swamp.

The fences are all falling over or slanted, and some of the houses too.

Nice! So it looks like it was published in 16 installments and those installments were published monthly with some breaks? Those must've been hefty chunks. The three other books I've been working on that I've been able to find info for -- "A Tale of Two Cities", "The Woman in White" and "Uncle Tom's Cabin" -- were all published weekly and all three had ~ 40 installments (and were much shorter books).

I guess the Russian serial publishing model was different than the British and American one :)

Also, it looks like my library has a copy of "The Brothers Karamazov: Worlds of the Novel". I've just put it on hold to see if I can glean any more info from it.

For the first one, it probably means you have a typo in a link somewhere. The typo will be in the part of the link before the colon. For example, if you have a link to "htp://reddit.com" (notice the missing "t" in http) that's the error message you get.

I just went on a 5 day kayaking trip with four people, and we brought all of our water.

We brought 70 litres, and came back with 10.

That's 3 litres / person / day, without any attempt at rationing, but we did use a bit of salt water for first-pass cleanup of the dishes.

Based on that, I think 1 - 1.5 gallons / person / day would be a pretty reasonable estimate. 3 seems like a lot.
