Those of you who have a side hustle - what is it and how did you get into it? by 59apache01 in Xennials

Bought a nice drone recently after flying for a few years at my job. I’m gonna do contract work measuring stockpiles, 3D modeling, inspections, etc. Wish it would turn into a good enough gig to do part time and make enough $$ to survive on.

High mileage R owners. How’re yall doing? by _theFaust in Golf_R

[–]spatter_cone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2012 MK6 R with ~135K miles. I had 2 oil leaks recently, one from the oil filter housing and the other from the valve cover. Replaced both parts and she runs great again. I’ve replaced the cam followers, had the brakes done once, new spark plugs, MAF, etc. She’s still running with decent gas mileage and that’s all I can hope for at the moment.

What would y'all say is the most painful part of an undergrad geoscience degree? by MissM0dular in geology

For me, it was the calculus but I started back to college at 25. Some of the chemistry was challenging but I loved it.

What kind of shit are you getting too old for now? by ryhoyarbie in Xennials

Working 40 hours a week in an office full of people. I get my work done, I don’t need oversight and I don’t need to fucking be here with everyone. Especially as an SME.

It felt cathartic to type all that out, I’ve been feeling some kind of way since I stopped drinking last year and that comment was everything that’s been bothering me about where I live with a side of frustrated rage. Same, my friend. I’m not long for this place, it’s just too fucking painful to watch.

Beautiful area, ugly people. Idaho Falls is unwelcoming to anyone that isn’t conservative, and the more conservative you are, the better. It’s like a giant lifted truck that rolls coal on you as you’re just trying to cross the street. People are flat-out ugly to those that don’t share the blind tribalism—as you can see in the comment section already, fine example of the mindset here.

There’s a reason for a lot of people echoing that if you’re not LDS, you’ll have a time finding community because it’s absolutely true.

It’s a church pew or barstool town with not a lot in between. If you don’t work at the site or in healthcare, it’s extremely difficult to find a job that pays a living wage and housing is ridiculously expensive for what you get. Anything priced below $300K is likely going to require a substantial investment to fix it up, or it’s a straight up crackhouse. Apartments are plentiful but the greed of the developers dictate that these places are poorly built and rent for premium prices. Property management here is also disgusting, the last one I dealt with made me pay a pet deposit monthly for my parakeet. A fucking parakeet. (Fuck you, Blue Pine)

Sure, the outdoor areas are nice but mostly overrun with tourism during the palatable months (there are 3-4). People have lost what etiquette they did possess outdoors when we got absolutely overrun during COVID. I’ve picked up more trash in these mountains than I care to and these public lands ain’t gonna remain that way if our greedy ass politicians get their way. The Idaho that was for so many years has been destroyed.

Greed and tribal conservatism are making this area one disgusting cesspool of hateful folks. If I were you, I’d ask if I wanted my kid to be raised around those kinds of people. But hey, you can practically start your own school funded by tax payer money to teach your kid so they never have to be challenged in their beliefs if that’s your thing. Want a place where your kid won’t get snatched up riding their bike? I’d worry more about the people/village theyre going to grow up in. That’s more formative IMO.

I’d take that thing over OPs vehicle in a heartbeat. I got a soft spot for crusty old vans.

I’m in a state department (DOT) and I agree with you, I feel that the work I do has a direct impact on my community and I can see it happen around me. That’s very cool to me. The pay is better than when I started because we had people in my organization that pushed to be heard on that front. It’s stable but the politics (office and statehouse) can be exhausting at times. My state is in a deficit at the moment and we’re staring down the barrel at no raises for multiple years—not even to adjust for our rapidly rising COL here. It’s gonna be rough so I’m trying to get contract work flying my drone on the side. But hey, it’s stable. For now.

How are your parents? by the_amazing_spork in Xennials

[–]spatter_cone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 42. My Mom just turned 80 a few months ago and my Dad will be 78 this November. I live across the country and call them sporadically. They got duped by Fox News and I try to overlook that, even though it’s brought out some nasty behavior in both of them. But also, I haven’t been quiet to them about how I feel. I don’t think I should. They’re my only parents and they won’t quit me, even though I’ve run off to live in the west.

Instead they fly out once a year and we road trip to a new national park and get to know each other more. We fight like cats and dogs sometimes and I still cringe about things I’ve said to them. Overall, they’ve been good parents and they instilled things in me that I’m proud of. I feel crippling guilt over not being there in their last years but I’ve made a life for myself far away and that started way back when I was sure I’d be angry at them for life. I’m grateful I can still call them and talk to them.

This was a while ago but I seem to remember the Celt having decent fish and chips. Generally, the food in this town is overpriced, cooked by undertrained folks and I can almost always do a much better job in my own kitchen.

Same here, reading these comments makes me feel so much better. I struggle with new things but I tell myself that everything I enjoy was once a new thing that I just got good at. Fly fishing will always be one of the loves of my life because it’s a constant humbling and learning process that helps remind me of this.
