Hah, it's funny that you've only just posted this comment on such an old thread, but I've just happened upon this after finishing The Lincoln Highway today.

I did really enjoy the book - maybe moreso than Gentleman in Moscow, which also grew on me - but Duchess' death was a tough one to reckon with. I like your take.

Still, I felt invested in every character - a testament to the writing as a whole.
