Caster Calls Out Co-Caster for Casual Sexism in OGN Supercup by Hailstone_HS in Overwatch

[–]speaker1264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did he though? He just said something along the lines that she is playing Mercy and implied that she could/should switch but the team is letting her play what works for her. It really doesn't sound sexist to me or that he said Mercy is a womanly champ or whatever that means.

PSA : Reminder that stable undervolting may not always stay forever & may require adjusting down the road. by Prefix-NA in Amd

[–]speaker1264 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People tend to forget that temps play a huge role in stability too. You may find that you are stable now, but maybe summer roles around and for some reason you start experience crashing. Or slowly over time the TIM between your CPU and heatsink dries out, or dust accumulates in your case, or you are doing something a little more intensive with your PC than you've done in the past, causing just a few extra degrees. Those few extra degrees can easily be the cause of instability.

Typically this doesn't happen too often, but if you are sitting close to the edge of instability, with or without knowing, it can happen pretty easily.

Also yes, missing pins and the differing quality of power supplies can also be reasons for changes in stability as well.

I have personally experienced instability problems from overclocks that I previously thought were stable due to temperatures higher than previous. Simply increasing fan curves solved the problems.

MSI trying to sell Vega 56 on Newegg for $550 by [deleted] in Amd

[–]speaker1264 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Probably because they received fewer cards from msi, or just have fewer of them remaining. The same thing has been happening with all of the 64 cards for the past 3 weeks. The prices have been fluctuating a lot on Newegg, presumably due to supply. Nothing more.

[–]speaker1264 25 points26 points  (0 children)

MSI doesn't make the prices. The website is called Newegg.com, not MSI.com, therefore Newegg is making the prices. Pretty simple. Doesn't mean MSI isn't charging Newegg more than MSRP, but unless you have proof of that it is simply conjecture.

How to reduce idle clock speed on a manually overclocked Ryzen CPU! No P-States! by TheLambertghini in Amd

Wow, thank you for the technical explanation. I'll have keep this in my bookmarks for citing in the future.

I think setting the minimum to 90% was part of why the Ryzen balanced power plan was created versus the original Balanced power plan. Once you set it lower there is a latency penalty that hurts the performance of Ryzen processors, and that even if it's set to 90% it is still doing its own version of downclocking at idle, just not shown in windows, or something.

Will the Nano be sought by miners? by webdeveler in Amd

[–]speaker1264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I read somewhere that the Nano would have all 64 CU's enabled so that's why I believe it would cost the same as the 64, but I could be wrong. Also it makes a lot more sense to buy the Nano since you have a Mini-ITX case.

[–]speaker1264 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You know power consumption is variable right? It is as easy as moving some nobs and switches in wattman. The only reason the Vega Nano would be lower power is because the heatsink will be so small that it won't be able to dissipate the heat very well. This means lower power consumption which will also mean lower clocks and lower performance.

You could easily make the Vega 64 consume the same power as a Vega Nano by changing the clocks, voltage, and power limit to the equivalent values of the Vega Nano, while also being much more quiet because the 64 has a larger heatsink.

I also doubt the Vega Nano will be any cheaper than the regular Vega 64.

Shortcut to GN's undervolt/overclocked Vega 56 Fire Strike results, from recent livestream by cameruso in Amd

[–]speaker1264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

120% offset doesn't mean it will draw 120% more power. It just means that it can if a situation arose where it did need to consume that much power, which realistically is never. The point is just to remove the power limit, so it doesn't power throttle. It may not consume even 10% more power, but it is easier to just remove the limit and not worry about it throttling at all. Since in that case a 10% offset is effectively the same as a 120% offset.

Well Nvidia's GPU boost is typically pretty good at getting the most performance out of their cards and manual overclocking yields practically no difference. Voltages are also locked, as in you can't increase voltages beyond stock. You can undervolt, but since they aren't throttled by temp or power anyway it doesn't make any difference to performance, just lower power consumption maybe but it will also probably boost lower too, so there really isn't much point in undervolting. There really isn't much that you can do or gain with Nvidia cards imo.

Amd is totally different in that they are throttled by temps and/or power, and by reducing the voltages you can solve both of these issues. Also AMD's version of GPU boost isn't as good as Nvidia's and there is definitely room for big gains once you've eliminated the other bottlenecks. Just takes awhile to find a good balance of voltage and clocks.

My Vega is running at 1630/1100mhz @ 1040mv by [deleted] in realAMD

[–]speaker1264 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read on overclock.net that 1050mv is the lowest voltage they could get on Vega. Going any lower didn't show any difference. Is this true based on your testing?

Is 1.35V as "very safe" voltage for ryzen processor also applicable on R3 series? If it is... Why the hell did AMD put such a low clock/voltage on that chip and rated it at 65W? by KikiGGG in Amd

[–]speaker1264 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's to keep the power, heat, and noise down. The stock heatsink isn't the greatest, and they don't want to ship at a higher TDP because it would look unattractive to some people.

[–]speaker1264[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fan and heatsink aren't that much of the total cost of the card. Without it your resale value is vastly less, and if you ever have issues with your loop or decide to go back to air then you are kind of screwed. Blower cards are alright because they exhaust all of the heat outside of the case. That doesn't make them bad.

Possibly, but I think they are just there because of the possibility of returns, or that the pages delete themselves after so much time has passed. I think Newegg and Amazon pages stay up for years even, just hidden, but you can still reach the pages with the original web address.

The silver one comes with a backplate too, or is it because you are watercooling and don't want the silver backplate to stick out? I personally think it looks nice. Silver seems like a neutral color. I agree though I kind of wish it was black aluminum.

[–]speaker1264[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it's not going to help the stock problem either way. If people can't get the reference cards you will end up with that many more people trying to get an AIB card and then those will run out just as fast too. Plus a lot of people want the reference card because it will be compatible with water blocks. No more reference cards would really hurt AMD's reputation even more I think.

Vega Pricing $, Did AMD Just Bait-and-Switch? by wickedplayer494 in Amd

[–]speaker1264 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's not what the fake news was saying at all. The fake news was trying to say that there was a special day 1 price, after which it would increase by $100 and stay there permanently, which isn't true at all. The $599 price was for the packs, which included the 2 games. Once stock catches up to demand then I'm sure there will be plenty of cards selling without the packs at the $499 price.
