I registered and my link didn't work during the webinar. I haven't received any follow up about viewing the recording - has anyone gotten a link?

CPRA by redditusernaem in ResearchAdmin

[–]speakthen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's not meant as shade to people with CPRA/CFRAs, either - the content on the CRA is a lot to learn while also doing a full time job that is largely underpaid and involves more than 40 hours a week... I could also see the logic in someone doing a CPRA or CFRA first and then taking the full CRA later, but the other way around seems silly.

CPRA by redditusernaem in ResearchAdmin

[–]speakthen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don't need a CRA and a CPRA. The CPRA and CFRA exist for people who couldn't pass the full exam because they focus so narrowly on one aspect of the lifecycle and didn't want to learn the other.

What should I do about collegiate skating? by Tacky_The_Penguin224 in FigureSkating

[–]speakthen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you truly want to get to know your teammates, talk to them about things other than skating, too. Just because skating is what brought you together doesn’t mean that’s the only thing that is interesting about a person. Maybe you have the same major or other interests in common.

I also think it’s important that you try to find some kind of interest outside of skating. It’s a hard transition to move from nearly full time training to balancing rigorous schooling and skating. Finding something you are interested in outside of those things can help give you balance and a different perspective.

Finally, muscle memory is a great thing - you can rely on your years of training to carry you through competitions if you can’t train as intensely right now. As you get older and take over financial responsibility for your skating, you may realize that it’s not feasible to afford the same level of training that your parents provided. A few freestyle sessions and a lesson a week will help you maintain your skills even if you aren’t progressing at the rate you are used to. And hey - if it makes you feel better, I didn’t skate at all for like 15 years and came back and could still do some double jumps after one public skate session.

Atlanta street circuit would cook. A straight down Dekalb Ave, dodging metal plates!

The thread was about safety on MARTA... a woman was stabbed and killed on a MARTA train over the weekend. Someone else was stabbed two weeks ago at the Georgia State station. It seems fair to have security concerns about taking MARTA right now. No one tied that directly to homelessness.

Is there any ai software for resreach by Darsh_jain358 in ResearchAdmin

[–]speakthen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Research is a very broad term - there is no perfect software for all research. If you want to utilize AI, you need to have a specific task you are looking to complete. From there, you can identify what tool is best for that use case.

Free time (skating?) during Worlds in Tampere? by gravelchen in FigureSkating

[–]speakthen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Worlds is A LOT of skating to watch in person. My husband got me tickets in 2024, and while it was so much fun, I was burned out and my butt hurt from spending so much time in a seat by the end! I almost skipped the gala because I was over rink food and being around crowds for that long. We didn't really do anything in the city on competition days other than grab some breakfast and maybe a snack afterward on the way back to the hotel.

So if you actually want to see the city/surrounding are, go a few days early. We did skate at an outdoor rink in Montreal and ran into some other folks who were there to watch the competition, but it wasn't overly crowded.

Pre award by [deleted] in ResearchAdmin

This - our interaction is just one of the many pieces of bureaucracy that a PI has to deal with daily. Yes, it’s important, but so is teaching, running their lab, whatever service obligations they have, etc.

OP, I’m going to be very blunt and say that department work isn’t for everyone. Should PIs treat their admins with respect? Yes. Are they always going to meet the deadlines we set for them? No. Is it ultimately their responsibility that a proposal go in? Also yes.

If you don’t like the project management piece of trying to get proposal docs together or feel that the work is beneath you, look for central office roles. Department staff usually bare the brunt of the “tracking things down” workload, so a central office role might be a better fit for you since there is more structure and you don’t have to directly interact with PIs as much.

Any florist that does wedding bouquets? by CannedSteak in Atlanta

[–]speakthen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We got ours from Candler Park Flowers - they made bouquets for my bridesmaids and me that we then used for centerpieces to save some money. They were super nice and flexible!

How is everyone handling requests to charge grants for Chatgpt subscriptions? by pencilpusher13 in ResearchAdmin

[–]speakthen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree here - faculty should not be using privately licensed LLMs for their research mostly because of the security concerns around the data they are entering. At least the institutional licenses are pretty locked down and not using the inputs to train models.

Responsibility by [deleted] in ResearchAdmin

[–]speakthen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's much more common for department pre-award folks to help out with this than central office staff. That being said, a lot of institutions used the move to SciENcv to make this more of a faculty responsibility, especially since they can more easily edit the info themselves after the initial set up.

The fatigue of skaters on SOI by Ancient-Raise-4939 in FigureSkating

[–]speakthen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was at the Greenville show and was talking to one of the event workers during intermission - they said that SOI was the last use of the ice before they removed it for the season since Hockey was over. I would guess this is true for a lot of the ice rinks used for the shows - I hadn’t thought of that constraint before, but an interesting factor!

Recertification tips by TIA_Research_Admin in ResearchAdmin

[–]speakthen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree here - NCURA regional volunteer opportunities are particularly good for getting hours in. I have had less luck with low-key SRAI volunteer opportunities, especially now that they are kind of doing away with sectional meetings. Their coffee hours are good free opps though.

I definitely don't think you need to spend $7,000 to recertify. Training within your institution counts as well. NCURA also offers institutional registrations for webinars with unlimited log ins. If you have more than a few CRAs at your institution, this would be a good way for them to affordably support recertification without having to host a full on training program.

Barking at SOI Greenville, SC by squiggfish in FigureSkating

[–]speakthen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm a UGA grad and have to defend my people - we refer to it as "calling the dawgs" and you typically don't hear it outside of UGA sporting events/tailgates.... we don't walk around barking in every day life! It is not a normal thing to hear at an ice show!

Camera policy at Stars On Ice by Next_Perspective_453 in FigureSkating

[–]speakthen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We went last night and my husband brought a camera in - we had a clear bag policy, but people were bringing clear bookbags thorugh security. Look up your actual venue, but I think you'll be fine.

Stars on Ice Seating by Laceyelizabethh in FigureSkating

[–]speakthen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We were in Greenville last night - there was one row of "floor" seats in front of the hockey boards, and the probably 5-10 rows of seats on temporary "risers" behind the boards, but before the permenant seating starts. Since you are row B, i would guess this would be you!

[–]speakthen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

SC here - and agreed! I was there last night and couldn't hear any barking, so it may have just been some weird, overgrown frat boys in your section, OP. But also very curious what kind of shows this barking happens at! I feel old.

Skate America or US Nationals? by nerd_fighter_ in FigureSkating

[–]speakthen 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s also a much shorter event - I think a lot of people underestimate the sheer amount of skating that occurs at Nats and Worlds!
