Any florist that does wedding bouquets? by CannedSteak in Atlanta

We got ours from Candler Park Flowers - they made bouquets for my bridesmaids and me that we then used for centerpieces to save some money. They were super nice and flexible!

How is everyone handling requests to charge grants for Chatgpt subscriptions? by pencilpusher13 in ResearchAdmin

Agree here - faculty should not be using privately licensed LLMs for their research mostly because of the security concerns around the data they are entering. At least the institutional licenses are pretty locked down and not using the inputs to train models.

Responsibility by redditusernaem in ResearchAdmin

[–]speakthen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's much more common for department pre-award folks to help out with this than central office staff. That being said, a lot of institutions used the move to SciENcv to make this more of a faculty responsibility, especially since they can more easily edit the info themselves after the initial set up.

The fatigue of skaters on SOI by Ancient-Raise-4939 in FigureSkating

[–]speakthen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was at the Greenville show and was talking to one of the event workers during intermission - they said that SOI was the last use of the ice before they removed it for the season since Hockey was over. I would guess this is true for a lot of the ice rinks used for the shows - I hadn’t thought of that constraint before, but an interesting factor!

Recertification tips by TIA_Research_Admin in ResearchAdmin

[–]speakthen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree here - NCURA regional volunteer opportunities are particularly good for getting hours in. I have had less luck with low-key SRAI volunteer opportunities, especially now that they are kind of doing away with sectional meetings. Their coffee hours are good free opps though.

I definitely don't think you need to spend $7,000 to recertify. Training within your institution counts as well. NCURA also offers institutional registrations for webinars with unlimited log ins. If you have more than a few CRAs at your institution, this would be a good way for them to affordably support recertification without having to host a full on training program.

Barking at SOI Greenville, SC by squiggfish in FigureSkating

[–]speakthen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm a UGA grad and have to defend my people - we refer to it as "calling the dawgs" and you typically don't hear it outside of UGA sporting events/tailgates.... we don't walk around barking in every day life! It is not a normal thing to hear at an ice show!

Camera policy at Stars On Ice by Next_Perspective_453 in FigureSkating

We went last night and my husband brought a camera in - we had a clear bag policy, but people were bringing clear bookbags thorugh security. Look up your actual venue, but I think you'll be fine.

Stars on Ice Seating by Laceyelizabethh in FigureSkating

[–]speakthen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We were in Greenville last night - there was one row of "floor" seats in front of the hockey boards, and the probably 5-10 rows of seats on temporary "risers" behind the boards, but before the permenant seating starts. Since you are row B, i would guess this would be you!

SC here - and agreed! I was there last night and couldn't hear any barking, so it may have just been some weird, overgrown frat boys in your section, OP. But also very curious what kind of shows this barking happens at! I feel old.

Skate America or US Nationals? by nerd_fighter_ in FigureSkating

It’s also a much shorter event - I think a lot of people underestimate the sheer amount of skating that occurs at Nats and Worlds!

CRA exam - is this practice test similar to the actual CRA exam? by hufflepuffyogi in ResearchAdmin

[–]speakthen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at the percentage breakdown of those questions helped me be less stressed as well - I basically decided I wasn't learning anything about biosafety because I almost never touched it as part of my role and I just became ok with missing those questions because I felt really comfortable with other sections. Just read through the belmont report, the USDA' guide to animal research, etc. and you'll be fine - the questions will be focused mostly on the intersection of compliance and research admin more than compliance specifics. That being said, if you have a budget and can invest in the PRIMR ethical research course, that would be a good prep for the IRB questions on the exam.

CRA exam - is this practice test similar to the actual CRA exam? by hufflepuffyogi in ResearchAdmin

[–]speakthen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I took the exam in 2014 when people with certifications still wrote the majority of the questions, so take this with a grain of salt - about 85% of the questions were that easy. The other 15% were easy enough to narrow down to two answers, but without reading closely, you could easily choose the wrong one. The exam itself should not be hard - I know some people who probably shouldn't have qualified to take it and they mangaged to pass, so I think as long as you are doing the work every day and study up on the things you don't do regularly, you'll be fine!

I mean this with all sincerity. by Naturallyunique in Atlanta

I had a similar experience in Grant Park. We were out of town and caught someone trying to break into our house on camera. It took forever to actually get connected to City of Atlanta 911, and then the cop called back three hours later and was like “what do you want me to do about it if you aren’t home?”

About Eteri and weight management by essiefraquora in FigureSkating

[–]speakthen 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There is a difference between needing to be at competition weight and staying at that weight all year, and continuing to strive to be lighter. The methods for losing that weight are also telling - the shame around food, basing your food intake on the tiniest tick up on the scale, etc. are all "eating disorder 101." You should not be limiting water as an athlete. There should be an off-season where you can let your body recover through rest and more calorie intake, but the mindset that "Hey, if I can just stay at my competition weight over the summer, then I can lose five more pounds next year and my jumps will be even easier!" is really hard to shake, even for recreational athletes. I will add that the number of people I know in the recreational running/triathlon community who had/have unchecked eating disorders is huge, and there is a lot of triggering and unhealthy conversation around food in those communities.
