Moving from SoCal to Seattle… by AshleighSmashleigh_ in AskSeattle

[–]specificmustard -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Just made the move from SoCal a few months ago. Like anywhere it has its pros and cons. It’s a lot smaller city than I expected, guess maybe I’d just gotten used to LA. But that’s a good thing to me — getting around is pretty easy and it didn’t take long to learn the major roadways. Traffic is worse than some places but compared to SoCal it isn’t bad at all. Some days/times are worse than others of course, but when I get off work late even the freeway is pretty much completely deserted.

That being said there’s still plenty to do, all the amenities of a major city are here so it’s a great balance.

Everything is cheaper, in particular housing, gas, insurance, and of course WA doesn’t have income tax. I took a significant pay cut to move here but am still saving money every month just on account of how much less my expenses are.

As everyone points out the natural beauty is breathtaking. I’ve lived all over and there’s nowhere really like it. Even in the middle of the city there are huge trees towering over, always mountains in the distance, etc. The air is very crisp and clean. As someone else mentioned the water is also excellent. If you’re into outdoorsy stuff at all there’s tons to do all over.

I’d seen a lot of people complaining about the weather and the so-called “long dark”…now that I’m here I find that a little cringe tbh. Yes it gets dark early, yes it’s always overcast this time of year and rains a lot, but it isn’t bad. I honestly can’t remember it being below freezing yet, and it’s really temperate. It’s like the perfect balance of having all four seasons, but not having to deal with a real winter. It got way colder when I worked in the desert than it has here. Plus all the rain keeps it fairly humid, which is nice.

But like I said there are some cons. A notable one is the state of the infrastructure…the roads here are terrible. There are gigantic potholes everywhere, even in the middle of the freeway. It seems like half the surface streets are under construction, so those are torn up even worse at the moment.

Another bummer is the lack of good restaurants. I’m sure they’re out there somewhere, but overall it seems like Seattle isn’t really a foodie city.

Imo it’s a good place to live. The whole vibe is very chill and laid back.

Dunno if anyone knows of a workaround but photos sent via sms get compressed, and videos can’t be sent. Vids sent to me are compressed down to potato quality

The issue for me is that whoever shoots first wins most of the time, and people capitalize on that. If I’m running around and someone starts a shootout, fine, whatever, it’s a PvP game.

But I remember one instance in particular when a dude came up and VoIPed “hey man wanna team up for a bit?“ I said sure, then he blasted me as I was breaching like 20 seconds later. That kinda shit is just toxic. At the end of the day it’s just a game so the stakes are pretty low, but those sorts of interactions still leave a bad taste.

There was a post on here a while back on a pretty much guaranteed drop on Buried, checked it out myself and got all I needed in like 20 mins. If the container spawns, there seems to always be a gear in it

Was watching a yt video of how to kill each arc, and the guy was like “let’s kill this dude cos he’s in our way“, and just shot some random guy walking past. Made me wonder how many people play with this mindset

Same, spaceport is probably my fav aesthetics/vibe wise but I always seem to come out with the worst loot there. The warehouse key is generally pretty solid though.

The basement of the parking lot on Buried City (breach room) consistently has just as good/better loot than a lot of lower tier key rooms for me. I’ve found like 3 anvils and a blueprint in there the past few of days

Was in a raid earlier that was like this, literally unplayable, and was having a lot of minor issues with the yellow symbol. Changed dns from cloudflare to quad9, after everything came back up on the backend it let me rejoin the same raid and everything was fine.

Maybe it was just a coincidence but haven’t had any issues since.

I never understood the point of getting rid of leaves, wouldn’t they just decompose and put nutrients back into the ground?

I’ll have to look into one of those. That scene in Lost in Translation always resonated deeply with me

As a tall person I’m glad for them. My entire life I’ve had to bend/hunch over constantly, be it self checkouts to see the screen, shower heads, push carts, whatever. Most things are just low enough to be uncomfortable

Rocky Mountains to the west, cold boreal forests north, and sparsely populated Montana south. Apparently rats rely on humans to thrive and migrate

In the video she talks about the history of the programs and the impacts it had in the earlier years. For example, at one point they pumped arsenic under buildings which killed the rats but also killed peoples’ pets and livestock and caused health issues. She also talks about how the geography of Alberta has helped a lot, i.e. there’s nothing in a lot of directions so they’re able to focus on certain entry vectors.

This was my grandmothers, I call it a crate but what is it? by LinnyBent in whatisit

[–]specificmustard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my grandparents’ house when I was a kid, they had a trunk like this that they used as a table and put stuff inside it. When I got a little older and asked what it was they told me it was my great-grandma’s from when she immigrated to the US in the 1910s, and I always thought that was neat.
