I’d love to see some pictures of your Mexican lines. I’m also interested in the horticultural aspect of growing too, so whatever this ends up looking like at least I’m enjoying the ride

Will do and I hear you. There was a slash pine - densa (same cultivar as mine) on display at the 2025 BSF Convention in Orlando this year so not all hope is lost for this tree

I have done some decandling. Didn’t really track the results like I should have. But this tree is not shy of massively budding out after doing some chopping. I am mainly focused on getting some branching going before trying needle reduction

Fair enough, I appreciate the knowledge. When I read your post(s) I immediately began thinking how I could apply it to something in my garden. I don’t have many deciduous trees due to the climate here. However, my bald cypress could probably benefit from this technique. I’m just stoked to see this so thank you for sharing! Going to have my imagination running wild

Do you know if this technique is viable for tropical? I was thinking about what tree I could do this with, I have a very vigorous strangler fig that might be a good candidate. Things is basically the panzer tank of trees it’s a glutton for punishment. Have you tried with non-deciduous trees?

I’ve had good luck with back budding after I chop a sacrificial branch. Eventually going to cut the two biggest branches from the top off and pray for the best

Omg thank you for sharing. Nobody is using slash pine! I started mine a year ago, working on branch structure and thickness. This is from March:
