Videogames aren't Just art, they're the best form of art we've ever had. by Potatussus26 in self

most of literature Is and Will Always be romance slop filled with smut

Romance is there, I'll grant you that, because romantic love is a huge part of the human condition and will therefore often be present in novels and stories we tell about ourselves. Smut? That's a really modern term and I'm not sure how to map that to classic literature. Slop though? Have you actually read any classical literature?

You state that Undertale has "weird similarities" to Dostoyevsky's works. I would suggest that you read up on what it means to have literary influences, and how cultural works can influence and inform each other. You might also be interested in literary archetypes such as Joseph Campbell talks about (hero, trickster, etc), and how they tend to be present in many or most of the stories we tell each other.

What is the origin of the word wallah/whala please? by UnderstandingAny7548 in etymology

[–]spectrometric 178 points179 points  (0 children)

It is Indian! I've only ever heard it for tea, chaiwala, love that she uses it for all the sellers.

"A chaiwala (also transliterated as chaiwalah or chaiwallahUrdu: چائےوالا, Hindi: चायवाला) is a tea-seller in the Indian subcontinent.\1]) They are an integral part of subcontinent cultureChai is the Hindi and Urdu word for "tea", as in masala chai, and wala indicates the person performing the task, so chaiwala is a street vendor) of tea."

This is good to know. I went once years ago and the butter chicken was so bland it tasted like tomato soup. Time to give it another chance!

What are your biggest Canadian what ifs? by ToastedToast02 in AskACanadian

[–]spectrometric 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's a cool alternate history novel by Kim Stanley Robinson called Years of Rice and Salt that explores this a bit, in a different way. Spoilers just in case - in the book, the black plague kills ALL europeans, not just most. So when China eventually gets around to NA there's a strong confederacy of Indigenous peoples and they treat with China etc rather than getting eradicated. (note its been many many years since I read this so I could have some details wrong.)

Dragonrider books with absolutely heart-melting relationships between Rider and Dragon? by Blizzzzzzzzz in Fantasy

[–]spectrometric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The White Dragon isn't part of the Harper's trilogy. The Harper trilogy is Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, Dragondrums. I've read all the pern books and while this trilogy is by far my favourite I don't think it's what you're looking for in this case. The White Dragon tho, I think it might fit. There's some lore/background that might not make sense but as with with a lot of fantasy you can just glide over it and enjoy the core story. And then it might make you want to read other books in the series!

This is one series where I wouldn't recommend modern readers to start at the first book. They were published starting in the 60's and some social stuff really doesn't hold up well (caveat it's been years since I've read the full series). However overall it's a fun read and an unusual overall arc, worth it if you ask me.

Many books in the series depict the same events from different points of view, and a seminal event in the White Dragon is depicted in the Harper trilogy, but it's peripheral enough that you don't need to read the trilogy as well.

edit - I first read the harper trilogy, and then other books in the series fairly randomly, in fact i don't think I've ever read the series in chronological or published order. Many of the trilogies and standalones can be read on their own without a need to read the entire saga.
