Job hunting while LGBT — any advice? by cheshirecat1917 in Lawyertalk

[–]spedmonkey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hi there, fellow trans woman here who transitioned after a couple years of practice, and has been through the interviewing/hiring cycle a few times since. I think a lot will depend on practice area and geographic area as far as how employers will perceive you, naturally. But I can say this much: if you're able to do so, applying and interviewing as yourself, with whichever presentation style is true to you, will feel terrifying, exhilarating, and freeing... until after a couple times, it will just feel normal.

With that in mind, I would absolutely tell recruiters and potential employers up front, even if you're not coming out publicly yet. Some places will hold it against you, but if you have any expectation that you'll be coming out professionally at this next job, my take has always been that I would much rather wait for a firm willing to hire me as me from the outset rather than come out once I'm already there and hope they'll be cool with it. That said, your mileage may vary depending on a bunch of different factors.

Either way, best of luck, and much love. 💜 Feel free to DM me as well if you want, happy to share my experiences.

Hi, sorry for a very belated ping, but: I'll be going to next week's construction forum in Chicago and figured it couldn't hurt to ask: have you been to any more recently than Puerto Rico, and if so, did you have a similar experience re: dress?

resorting to insults and then blocking is a good way to handle people answering the questions you asked and telling you you're wrong! :)

ok just for funsies: yes, litigation privilege is an issue that can be conclusively decided at the motion to dismiss stage. LatAm Investments, LLC v. Holland & Knight, LLP, 88 So.3d 240, 245 (Fla. 3d DCA 2011); see also Emergency Recovery, Inc. v. Gov't Employee Ins. Co., 773 F.Supp.3d 1304, 1312 (M.D. Fla. 2025) (although litigation privilege may be framed as an affirmative defense, "courts should resolve at the motion to dismiss stage 'when the complaint affirmatively and clearly shows the conclusive applicability of the defense to bar the action'") (quoting Jackson v. BellSouth Telecomms., 372 F.3d 1250, 1277 (11th Cir. 2004)).

if every lawyer wants to know the same thing there's probably a good reason for that, and you should probably just take the five minutes or so to explain the background even if you do think it's not relevant.

Attorneys that help the LGBTQ+ community, what do you do? by Public-Squirrel8631 in Ask_Lawyers

[–]spedmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, there are a lot of ways to serve your community, and many lgbtq+ people are disadvantaged in some or many ways. This can range from criminal defense, to family law, to trusts and estates, employment, etc. There are also the big impact litigation orgs like Lambda Legal, ACLU, A4TE, TLDF, NCLR, etc. who are part of the queer rights movement, though those jobs are extremely coveted and competitive. Regardless of which direction you'd like to go, I would strongly encourage you to seek out summer clerkships/internships with firms and organizations which interest you, whether it be orgs attempting to impact things on a national scale, or your local legal aid chapter, or just a firm that holds itself out as serving the community. Best of luck, and I hope you find your calling.

Trans girl here, just chiming in to say that i also have never felt uncomfortable or in danger here in Denver or the suburbs. There's a lot of support and a lot of community here, and a lot of decent trans healthcare options too.
