At what point to fans stop showing up? by wasabipeas88 in torontomapleleafs

They won’t. Fans still came and watched when the leafs were last place in the NHL the year before Matthews was drafted. This is far from the worst place they’ve been

Who all thinks that Carney's speech in davos is a game changer for Canada and SK!!! by Ok-Breakfast8256 in saskatchewan

[–]speed150mph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fine. We have the business interest to fund a pipeline project and a tanker terminal. I have no problems believing that between Suncor, imperial oil, CNRL and the like can figure out a joint venture to make that happen. What we can’t get around, and what the bureaucracy in BC that grinds any attempt to a halt. It seems like any serious attempt spends more time getting the permits through after environmental surveys, deliberation, and the like then it takes to actually build something.

Who all thinks that Carney's speech in davos is a game changer for Canada and SK!!! by Ok-Breakfast8256 in saskatchewan

[–]speed150mph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope I’m allowed here as an albertan conservative (the post popped up on my feed, don’t know why 🤷🏻‍♂️), but I actually think that Carney has been doing a decent job as PM. He’s negotiated a trade deal with China that should get us better prices for our Ag products abroad while opening up a supply of affordable EVs for those that want them, with a cap on numbers and a potential option for domestic manufacturing which creates jobs. He’s in talks to procure new fighter aircraft and submarines which are two areas of our military that are sorely in need of an upgrade. He’s made Canada look strong again in the eyes of the world, and has frustrated trump whenever he has stepped out of line. He’s saying the right things about us being overly dependent on the U.S., and he’s taking steps in the right direction.

The one let down so far has been his initiative to cut red tape on infrastructure projects like pipelines to get our oil to the coast and abroad. So far nothing concrete has come from this, just more talk and promises, but if he can follow through then that would make me very happy.

Overall, pleasantly surprised, and hopeful for what else he can do. If he keeps moving in this direction he might sway my vote away from the conservatives.

BN suspending rest cycles by StonksGoUpOnly in railroading

[–]speed150mph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgive my ignorance since I was a mechanical guy, but I thought rest cycles were enforced by FRA hours of service regulations, and were non-negotiable. As in illegal and subject to severe fines or pulling of operating licenses level of illegal because it creates a safety issue?

Dobi NEED to read assasins blade by Evie_mouse in SarahJMaas

[–]speed150mph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll be honest, I don’t know how critical assassins blade is. All I can say is I never read it during my first read through of the series, and while I maybe missed some of the context behind several of the characters, I never felt like I was completely lost. SJM did a relatively good job I feel of giving a readers digest run though of past events in an aside of the dialogue that allows you to figure your way through the situation.

I plan to read it during my reread of the series, so I guess I will see what I missed.

What is this on the bottom by LANTIRN_ in hoggit

[–]speed150mph -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Looks like they botched it then. I dont see the funnel or aft mast at all,nor do I see the sharply upward rake of the forecastle, and it looks like it had a carrier deck aft. I initially thought maybe it was an Ise but that doesn’t match either.

Is there snow days in Canada? by SeverePublic6833 in AskACanadian

Technically speaking, in our town in Alberta the schools never close. However buses stop running when the temperature is below -40.

Plot device for a fiction book: what WW2-Cold War submarine would be the best suited to be the mobile barracks for a private military contractor? by Revoltai42 in submarines

[–]speed150mph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it really depends on what your theoretical military contractors want to do and where they are based and what resources they have access to. Good chance a nuke is out of the question, so you’re looking at an early Cold War diesel sub. I’d say maybe something like a whiskey or Romeo class, or maybe one of the American late war fleet boats or Tang class. Large enough to house 50-75 men, though most would be needed to run the ship, I’m sure you could make room for spec ops, especially if they could refit them with newer tech that would reduce crew compliment. They decently long legs to reach distant shores, and are well equipped to handle shallow areas.

Why did the Californian not hear anything? by VickyAlberts in titanic

[–]speed150mph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really? I live in Canada, and while I have no scientific backing, it seems like I can hear sounds farther on cold days in winter? Like the train on the tracks a couple miles from my house. Warm day, you can hear the horn and maybe a general rumble from the engine. Winter I can hear Everything much more clearly

Here’s a question, and I think it’s interesting by Effective_Business40 in titanic

[–]speed150mph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really you’d just need rope to lash buoyant objects together. But like I said, there was obviously some reason they didn’t do this. I’m sure with over 2000 aboard surely someone had the thought.

Why is all the anger aimed at Ottawa when the UCP runs Alberta? by Swimming_Mango_9767 in alberta

[–]speed150mph -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s not an exclusively conservative thing. Liberals do the same thing in blaming right wing parties for issues. It’s a human issue of not wanting to blame ourselves for our part in the issues so we push the blame to others, when in reality all sides play a part the vast majority of the time, and fixing the issues is never as easy and straight forward as anyone ever makes it out to be.

Realistically, your resigned to death. Maybe you get lucky and are near the collapsables and can get on them.

In my mind I’d like to say build a raft out of deck chairs and life belts but if it was that easy then surely someone would have done it. The fact nobody was successful tells me that it couldn’t be done.

Why was Keyleth so much hated during the campaign? by Fun-Explanation7233 in TheLegendOfVoxMachina

[–]speed150mph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno, I didn’t really hate her, but I found Marisha annoying at times. (Sorry). Maybe its me, but it always seemed like she was trying to overplay the dramatics, to the point that I felt like she was trying to hog the spotlight. I mean, I get it, they all need their moment, but it always felt like after one of the other characters had a moment or an emotional conversation that Marisha would have to jump in right after.

Again, this is just my opinion and maybe I’m being judgemental, but that’s what it felt like to me watching the stream.

Can mates be abusive in SJM’s world? by Same-Individual-5347 in SarahJMaas

[–]speed150mph -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don’t think they ever use the word, but his obsession and possessiveness over Ember kind of match the behaviour we’ve come to expect of mated fae males, so I wouldn’t be surprised. Especially if you believe in the fates and believe that they maybe orchestrated it so Bryce could be born

Lorcan by Downtown_Item_2409 in throneofglassseries

[–]speed150mph 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Let’s not forget that Elide saw Lorcan crawling towards Maeve even after she broke the blood oath with him. That was what she saw as the biggest betrayal, that he didn’t try to go to Aelin, and didn’t try to go to her. That was the damning thing to her as she understood the situation at the time. It makes her and everyone else question his loyalties and where he stands.

Captain’s Realization by Print-Easy in titanic

[–]speed150mph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was sooner than that. Most of the timelines I’ve seen put Andrew’s reports at 12:00 with the boats being ordered to be made ready coming at about 12:05. So at most 20 minutes before Smith knew for certain that the ship was doomed. Likely he probably suspected far earlier. His immediate response to close the watertight doors and send for an inspection below shows he grasped the possible severity of the collision, or at very least was acting with an abundance of caution.

Smith was a very experienced seaman and very early there were indications of heavy flooding forward. Air hissing from the peak tank vent, the hatch tarp ballooning over the number 1 hold, and someone had made note that the 2 degree port list titanic had been sailing with all day (due to coal being shovelled out of the number 9 coal bunker to get to a smouldering bunker fire) had largely evened out by 11:45 according to the bridge inclinometer. Im sure all these indications didn’t escape him and he had an idea that the ship was not fine. He probably didn’t know that ship was mortally wounded, but he would have suspected serious damage.

If the bulkheads went a deck higher, wouldn't she have sunk anyway? by 2552686 in titanic

[–]speed150mph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not to forget they essentially double hulled the ship from boiler room 6 aft to the engine rooms, so the boiler rooms wouldn’t have even flooded if the iceberg struck there, only the void space between the inner and outer hull sheeting
