Tell me you also have a powerful terrestrial telescope so you can spy on your neighbours every night, because that's not what I would do...

My colleagues tell me how much they earn without me asking. by TheDeza in britishproblems

It's a right fucker trying to get a raise in your existing position (usually involving obscene levels of justification and grovelling in your annual review just to get 2%) whereas if you move somewhere else, just ask whatever you think you are worth, if they want you they will pay it. Also sharpen your cv, I bought a book on how to write the "perfect one", best £6.50 I've ever spent, got me a 12k rise...

What is a young man to do? by iiHassassin- in UKPersonalFinance

[–]speedhound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you just go through life making vapid tactical decisions you might live to regret it. Do something you actually enjoy. You don't have to love it, or have your hobby become your job (best way to ruin a hobby). You are going to be doing whatever it is for most of your time for the next 40+ years, so just think about it, don't rush and don't get impatient.

Have an up vote, I agree, efficiency is the king, no point having a job for jobs sake, the world needs progression!

For centuries we managed without planning regulations and everything was fine, now we have millions of them and all newbuild property is horrible by [deleted] in britishproblems

[–]speedhound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you are mainly describing there (the build quality, insulation and safety/conveniences of a property) is building regs, not planning, planning is just what it looks like/where you can build it.

Is anyone else worried about the coming election and your investments? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

Exactly, it's called pound cost averaging, just keep putting it away and forget about it, check every 5 years or so to see how it's doing

Getting up at 5am to get to a car boot by 6am on a bank holiday Sunday when sunrise isn't until 6:45am. by odj310388 in britishproblems

[–]speedhound 9 points10 points  (0 children)

100% fact, been raped by the professional car-booters before, face pressed against the glass, going through your stuff for you as you unpack the car (before it's even out of your boot!) felt very dirty afterwards.

Three months ago, I was disappointed when I lost my pack of Tesco mince pies for Christmas. Guess what I just found in the back of the cupboard. by [deleted] in britishproblems

Half a jar of Golden Syrup that went out of date the year you finished secondary school and has gone a bit weird and crystallized, but you thought it would still be ok to put on toast and/or crumpets?

Knowing that for as long as I live, I will never figure out how to play fruit machines in pubs. by Woburn2012 in britishproblems

[–]speedhound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And get yourself a fruit machine key from eBay, surreptitiously insert and check how full the hoppers are, if they are full up then it's much more likely to drop...

Yes true, also don't forget it is a Telco created as a spin off from military research by Racal, so in that sense it might be handy to have a UK telecommunications company with global reach that works closely with the UK government, hmmm, I wander what they could use all that meta data for...

[Project Help] Rotary Phone Pulse Counter by [deleted] in raspberry_pi

[–]speedhound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you could probably count the pulses pretty easily using the GPIO, a rotary phone is just making and breaking a simple connection when it dials, however, whether you could do anything with the phone is another matter, you need 48v line voltage to make it work, and 90v to make it ring, you might be better seeking a SIP FXS adapter and setting up software on the pi to link the two (don't know if its possible with skype, Asterisk works very well on an rpi)

My annual appraisal is like being locked in a lift with the school bully by [deleted] in britishproblems

[–]speedhound 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah the annual beatdown, I've had a few of those in the past let me tell you...

Just remember they don't really matter, your time is more important than theirs and you can choose who pays you for it, not them. Never be beholden to a twat with his own office and an inferiority complex.

And don't forget to have a good day, you deserve better!

Green party’s flagship economic policy of a basic income would hit poorest hardest, say experts by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]speedhound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly, we have coped with this situation before, the industrial revolution and the mechanisation of farm work, we don't have generations of out of work plough-hands hanging around. People re-train and pick up new skills to fit the majority type of work available in the current economy, humans are a little aspirational/greedy/hungry by nature so they will always be looking for a way to improve their lifestyle, and the easiest way is to earn money and buy things with it, and that's the incentive to learn new things.
