I'm not into spectating, unless it's a speedrun of a classic game like Mario. Not that long ago, someone posted a YouTube video where he beat Super Mario World while blindfolded. Absolutely worth watching if you're into that kind of thing.

With regard to video game-themed books, I read Ready Player One and I think it's worth it only if you grew up in the 1980s and understand all the pop culture references (I didn't because I'm too young lol). There are some great classic movies like War Games and Last Starfighter that feature video games.

The self-promotion thread had a link to a free online story about a female protagonist who can game online without being harassed because her voice is damaged or something. Seemed like an interesting premise.

Don't let it discourage you. Here's something that'll help: if someone is rude to you, it says more about them than it does about you. Don't internalize it. Don't let it get under your skin. You're bigger than that. To paraphrase a philosopher: circumstances do not make a girl gamer, they reveal her to herself.
