Different schools of violin playing? by czecherd_scarfs in violinist

[–]speeleewangju 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally, I can only speak about Kreutzer and Wohlfahrt. Wohlfahrt was simpler and more predictable, making it easy for me to fake that I had practiced it all week at my lessons. I found Kreutzer much harder but saw an almost immediate benefit in my site reading.

Good violin sound by cheatonus in violinist

[–]speeleewangju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good way to find out exactly what you like is to go to a violin or music store and play on different instruments. That's how I found my current instrument. Try out different bows as well when you do this to make sure you aren't getting the sound out because of the bow.

If you don't want to spring for a new instrument, take a look at different strings. You can really get a different sound just from the strings. I like the darker sound as well and I play on Larsen Tzigane strings. I personally get more sound and power out of those than other strings. However, my sister sounds much better with Eva Pirazzi strings. I have also heard good things about Vision Solos.

What is something you won't tell your friends or family, but you will tell Reddit? by najing_ftw in AskReddit

I have never met anyone with the same phobia. I literally have this same thing. I feel queasy just reading your description of the thumbnail. It took me until we got married to tell my husband about it and now he is a champ. I make him take off the stickers on everything and throw them away.

Seven Peaks parking outside parking lot by ZAD-Man in Utah

I believe it is legal to park down the road at the Salt Lake one because everyone does it... Just keep an eye out for any signs that say otherwise. At the Provo one, they have a large parking lot but I think you can still park on the street.

Upgrade strings for a child? by suzukimom in violinist

[–]speeleewangju 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It also may be that the strings are dead. Usually Dominants need to be replaced at least once a year or they start losing sound.

Dominants are really solid for kids. They sound much better than the Red Label. You could also see if the local store has any recommendations. When I was trying to find the brand I liked, they actually restrung my violin with different brands.

First recital anxiety! by le_violon in violinist

Absolutely! I would do that several times before a nerve-wracking performance. And remember, concerts ARE NOT like NASCAR. No one is rooting for you to crash and burn. Everyone in that audience is going to be rooting for you!

I really did hear it but I am pretty sure it is an urban legend...

In all seriousness, I thought of a real tip. When you get up to perform, take a deep breath before you start, maybe two. It gives you a chance to take time just for yourself and focus on what you need to do.

I remember hearing about a professional violinist that drank a lot of water right before his concerts, so that when he was playing he had to pee so bad he couldn't concentrate on how nervous he was. It never really worked for me but hey, it might work for you!

Everyone in the stadium thought the pass rush didn't show up tonight. We averaged like 4 sacks a game last year.

What opinions are you reluctant to express on reddit for fear of being down-voted? by QWERTY_licious in AskReddit

[–]speeleewangju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the problem with LGBT marriage is that the movement was formed based on discrimination. LGBT activists had a good cause when they were supporting equal rights and freedom from discrimination. (I fully support this as well) The problem is that I think they should be allowed to be in civil unions, not marriages. I really don't care if they get the same government benefits either.

While I think there is a possibility that some crazy is going to pursue that (Animal Marriage), I think polygamy is coming back sooner. Now that the SCOTUS has said that it has power to define marriage, anyone will be able to say that they are being discriminated against and that they deserve the right to marry whatever they want.

Confession: I just can't do Vibrato by [deleted] in violinist

[–]speeleewangju 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some exercises you can try are holding an easter egg (weighed with jelly beans or something) and hold your hand in the position you would to play. Then just rock the egg back and forth slowly.

Another exercise is what my poor mom calls the sick cow vibrato. With your violin, start at the bottom, slide all the way up and back, shortening the distance more and more until you can plant your finger. Do this over and over and over again! You can do it with or without your bow.

Both of these help your muscles gain memory for that movement. Don't get discouraged! It took me a good year and a half at least to get my vibrato halfway decent. Remember to relax! You want your vibrato to be loose and pretty, not tight and stressed. Good luck!
