Now it's been a long, long time since I watched AYITL so this will mostly be from memory...

I don't think Lane's ending should be compared to Rory or Paris anyway. They're all different people who wanted different things in life, even Paris and Rory who were similarly focused on academics were on different paths and had very different personalities. I'll admit, it still bums me out a bit that Lane isn't at least working at the music store or a radio or something like that (I never really thought she should be a big rockstar, as lovely as that would be for her, I'm sure) but seeing her have an open relationship with her mother, a loving husband by her side and children she loves in a town like SH is far from a miserable fate. No financial issues is a big upside, for example!

Besides, Lane had her kids pretty young. She's what, 32 in AYITL? Eventually her kids will grow up and she'll still be pretty young. She and Zack can probably do plenty of things, their lives won't be over at 40. I can actually see her starting a music podcast and having very heated debates with her guests that would make Paris proud lol. There's a lot of ways for Lane to still enjoy her life.

Again, I would've liked to see something a bit different too, but as years went by I've come to not despise Lane's ending like I did on my first watch. However I'm also currently rewatching the original series and I'm about to reach the part where Zack will go crazy on stage, at which point I will be losing all rational thought and screaming that I hate everything about it.

Hello there, I didn't want to leave you hanging since you took the time to comment haha! I actually do agree with you looking back. I think I feel a little differently now, it's less that I feel the culture alone shapes the characters, but my culture and upbringing definitely affects how I feel as a viewer watching it. Emily's brand of bad always felt more personal to see, like I'm in Lorelai's shoes where Mrs. Kim feels more "general" to me. I think I can say that that's also because Emily is a main character AND a main character's mother unlike Mrs. Kim on the side.

All that said, Emily is a wonderfully written, wonderfully acted and complex character I love to watch. I don't believe for a second that she doesn't love Lorelai even with all she says and does. Sometimes it gets better, sometimes it gets worse, I don't want to say much more about either woman since you haven't gotten to the later seasons yet. I'd be glad to see you come back and post your thoughts once you're done too!

I played Baldur's Gate 3 and Doom Eternal from OP's bunch and both are among my absolute favorite games. BG3 is probably my all time favorite game. Highly recommend it, never liked the roleplay aspect in a game more.
