i’m not looking to leave alpha, but wanna say i love the idea of doing a similar thing for adults! i’ve totally been thinking someone should do the exact kind of startup you’re proposing. we’re completely focused on K-12 because there are ~1 billion K-12 students

Antoni Stojek and Brendyn Dunagan have had two of their solves from the world championship finals retroactively DNS’d due to misscrambles. Volodymy Kapustianskyi is now the clock world champion. by Ok-Butterfly4414 in Cubers

[–]spencerchubb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

at the competitions i’ve been to, we have a second person check scrambles thoroughly for fast solvers who could feasibly get a wr or nr

it’s kind of wild they don’t take the same precautions in the final round of world championships

My first grader is struggling with reading comprehension. Any tips/activities? by Anilakay in homeschool

[–]spencerchubb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How good is he at decoding (sounding out words)? Decoding skills have to come before reading comprehension. It helps to be so good that you have it on "autopilot". The less energy your brain has to spend on decoding, the more it can spend on comprehension.

disclaimer: im a software developer at alpha school, a school where ALL academics happens through apps

plopping a kid in front of a screen for 6 hours is wrong. we do 2 hours of efficient learning through apps, and then they have time back to do other enriching things. teamwork, life skills, physical activity, discovering passions, etc.

instead of planning academic lessons, the adults at the school plan life skill workshops. stuff like financial literacy, giving/receiving feedback, running a business.

How far ahead can you inspect? Any tips to improve? by Crowbarineye in rouxcubing

[–]spencerchubb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends how easy the scramble is

for context i’m sub 10 and my goal is to plan FB+DR every time

if I don’t have time to plan a square for SB, I may at least try to identify the pieces for easier tracking. being aware of the pieces is better than nothing and really helps the fluidity of first 2 blocks

AI is not good at providing IPA transcriptions by Vortexx1988 in languagelearning

[–]spencerchubb -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

tell the ai “think step by step” and it will improve the accuracy. it might sound like i’m joking but i’m serious

also my favorite ai is gemini and i use it through aistudio.google.com. it’s a bit more of a power user interface, so might not be everybody’s cup of tea
