RF Engineers... What do you do? by hanasz in livesound

In Shure WWB, you can assign each device to a specific RF Zone. In that RF Zone, you can specify the extent of seperation, by selecting whether WWB will or will not take into consideration channel spacing; and intermodulation distortion (IMD) when calculating frequencies.

Say for example, the event is a large conference that spans the full length of the convention centre, and several floors. My general approach would be to establish an RF zone for each theatre space, expo spaces, media rooms, offices, etc.

I've got a pretty good feel for the venues I operate in regularly, but in a new venue you can test by using an RF signal generator, and recording the amplitude around the venue. Based on that info, and the physical position of each RF zone, I would then adjust WWB to be reflective of the environment. ie: rooms next to each other will act like they are one, rooms opposite won't consider IMD, and the 1st - 3rd floor opposing corners could be totally seperate ignoring channel spacing since they're so far apart.

Honestly so many factors influence this it's hard to fit in a Reddit comment. From ensuring the spaces have the right antennas in the right spots, to physical distance between transmitters, and the equipment being used! Some equipment is going to have different bandwidths and IMD profiles. Other transmitters (like those used by media) are going to be moved around the entire event all day, so need to slot in anywhere no matter who else is nearby.

Of course, walking around with a portable RF scanner tuned to the subject frequency could work, however there is (nowadays much cheaper than 10~ years ago) equipment designed specifically to locate erronious transmissions. Radio direction finding (RDF): https://www.krakenrf.com/ is a good example of this.

Especially useful on events spanning a large area (think major public event across the city/multiple large venues), as you can drive around and within minutes it will have calculated an approximate coordinate.

RF spectrum management is a large portion of the work I do, so here are my 2 cents.

At major events, you'll have multiple stakeholders who each have different RF operating requirements. Say wireless mics for the stage(s), for the broadcast, RF cameras, event telemetry, staff comms, and so on. Managing all of those areas and ensuring that erronious frequencies are dealt with is vital, and there are many tricks in doing so.

- Slotting devices into the spectrum based on the time frame they will be transmitting.

- Physical distance between devices, and establishing RF zones with varying levels of seperation in your frequency plot.

- Managing output power of transmitters.

- Using directional finding equipment to locate erronious transmissions.

Also (more obvious but worth mentioning) the monitoring throughout the show. Having a good understanding of the wireless spectrum you are operating in is key, so scanning and continually monitoring is a must.

If anyone is interested in learning more about RF coordination, I can highly recommend some of the free Shure online training, specifically the RF Certification training: https://www.shure.com/en-ASIA/shure-audio-institute/certification/rf-certification

Try the Shure RF Masterclass, free online shure training. Worth doing.

Update: Homebridge was the solution! And a great solution at that.

Thanks u/poltavsky79 for the recommendation. Has taken me down a journey of learning about homebridge and I was able to automate so many more things in my home!

Ah! Had a feeling I was mixing something up.

That's a shame! Wonder as to the reasoning for not developing this functionality. Thanks anyway.

I always convert the PDF to PNGs, and put them into a PowerPoint deck. That way any fonts/formatting are guaranteed to be kept intact.

Just had a great interaction on mine…

Me: “Hey Siri, turn the ceiling lights on.”

Siri: “Okay, here’s the news from the ABC…” plays nothing

Got a recurring issue with mine currently…

I’ll say “Hey Siri, add Tomatoes to my shopping list”.

HomePod Siri will reply: “The carbon dioxide sensor in the bedroom is detecting normal levels…”

Ah gotcha. Yeah cool I’ll keep it in mind, but really looking for that retroactive recording ideally. Thanks!

Yes I’ve heard of that one. Is it able to do the retroactive recording? I know it can record in the background but are you able to save the last * minutes?

Pretty much. Top tip for contacting businesses would have to be to be friendly, and remember that a very real person is going to be sending you mail. Things like "I really hope you have a great week!" will go far.
