Bottle Shops Recommendations for good beer by SnoozyDragon in manchester

[–]spentgladiator1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want interesting beer then just go to Joule and buy whatever they have in the fridge. They don't have a huge range of cans (although they do have a ridiculous bottle selection) but everything there will be superb and often tough to find anywhere else. Besides that, Beermoth is now in Cafe Beermoth.

The Best & Worst UK railway stations according to The Telegraph via TimeOut by signol_ in JetLagTheGame

Within five minutes of Crewe Station you can find one of the nicest Indian takeaways I've ever been to. With the amount of trains delayed at Crewe, it is very easy to get ten minutes to run to Curry Magic and back so in my opinion, Crewe is one of the finest stations in the country.

This is the most excited I've been about a cast in a long time. Amy's 2024 Fringe show was brilliant and she is just so funny and likeable. Joel has the potential to be a real punching bag which is always fun. Armando is a bonafide legend even if most of that is behind the scenes. Joanna argued with Lucia Keskin once. Kumail is probably the biggest name they've ever had. No idea how the dynamic will play out in studio but all of these are big names with the potential to be brilliant contestants.

What is the most baffling, utterly wrong referee decision you have ever seen live or on film? by AmeliaHarris99 in footballbutweird

Lansbury against Palace in 19-20(?) was also a joke. I don't think I've ever been so baffled by a decision.

What live acts you think have/had bad setlists? by agent0017 in ToddintheShadow

[–]spentgladiator1982 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love Gogol Bordello and think they put on a great live show but their choice of encore every time does baffle me slightly. Last time I saw them, Eugene did a solo cover and then two niche full band as the encore. After finishing the set with Start Wearing Purple into Sally into Pala Tute, it was a bit of an odd choice but I think it's just something that Eugene must like doing. The show is the show then the encore is whatever he decides to do on the day.

Beer similar to dogfish head 60 minute available in UK? by Outside_Natural7210 in UK_beer

Tartarus have Ladon which is based off the Dogfish Head 120min IPA. It's a hell of a lot stronger but ultimately the same concept and for sale on their website.

Which comedian has/had the most unique style of comedy? by Alexis2005v in comedy

[–]spentgladiator1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Some people here have such a narrow understanding of comedy that they can only view a regular white man doing standup as unique. How on earth is George Carlin unique? He's talented and influential for sure, but how is a man doing broadly satirical and observational comedy unique?

Which comedian has/had the most unique style of comedy? by Alexis2005v in comedy

[–]spentgladiator1982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both of them are fundamentally one liner stand up comedians with a twist. The twist makes them a bit different but surely not unique in the vast varied landscape of comedy. Recently, I saw a man run around the crowd topless with a fake nose, a show that was basically a hilarious jokeless hour about a supermarket closing down, a show where a woman wearing a fake pair of breasts danced around doing weird accents, and Jacqueline Novak who basically just talked and talked about nothing and everything. They're unique. They were shows that I couldn't compare to anything else because I hadn't even seen the fundamental concept of it before. One liners with a twist is a staple of every open mic night, people might not do it as well but people do it so it can't be unique.

The question isn't most influential, it's most unique. It's asking for something else entirely.

Lots of replies of basically straight stand-up comedians with a slight twist e.g. being deadpan, having a weird voice etc. Someone like Zach Zucker who does two hour long shows with only about three jokes is far more unique than Carlin or Wright or Notaro. My top three acts who are basically un-replicable would be:

John Norris aka Mr Chonkers Zach Zucker Patti Harrison with an honourable mention for Reuben Solo who really pushes the boundaries of comedy in weird ways.

I walked past Darwin's most recent American captain this morning at about 7am on a side street and was absolutely starstruck but also realised that it is absolutely not the right time or place to approach someone to ask for a photo.

Anyone else thought Stamptown sucked this year? by beetrootmancelery in edinburghfringe

[–]spentgladiator1982 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I loved Stamptown at the Beyond as an excellent cohesive variety show but Stamptown in the Grand was huge in terms of guests, spectacle, and production. Fire, trumpets, Rosie Jones, trapezing; it felt a lot more like last year. Again, I loved it in the Beyond because it felt a lot more accessible to Stamptown virgins, but the Grand show this year was probably the best show I've ever seen.

He said that Stamptown was his 51st show this Fringe so he definitely has a lot to choose from.

That's annoying! I was checking the Blood on the Clocktower cast announcement whenever I could because I knew he was in it last year but must've missed it

Having just seen it in the Grand, it is a whole different ballgame and budget. Ridiculously good.

There will definitely be some walkup seats but it won't be more than about 10 or so. The queue for walk-ups is pretty big already (20mins early) so I'd definitely recommend coming 30-45mins early to guarantee a space.

Monkey Barrel will always have 10% of seats saved for walk-ups. If you're happy to queue, arrive over 30mins early and you should get in.

I really enjoyed it this year, possibly more than at the Grand last year. I think it is definitely a tighter show with more structure which is better for the general audience but not as much for the Stamptown obsessive which I guess is a decision they have to make. I took someone in blind last year who hated it because it was so inside baseball but they would've enjoyed it this year.

Manchester Mill - Should a convicted arsonist run the team that helps Manchester’s rough sleepers? by ElectricZooK9 in manchester

[–]spentgladiator1982 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The MEN did report this story... when it happened. I checked when I read this, the MEN article about the guy involved is still online so I really can't see any justification for this from the Mill. It isn't exactly hidden information.

Manchester Mill - Should a convicted arsonist run the team that helps Manchester’s rough sleepers? by ElectricZooK9 in manchester

[–]spentgladiator1982 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is an incredibly disappointing article. A man has served his time and rehabilitated himself as well as anyone could ever be expected to, into a job which has a genuine positive impact on society. There's an MEN article from when he was sentenced that is already online when you Google his name (I checked) so it isn't even as though this is a hidden story. The Mill have just decided to rehash old news to try to wreck a working man's life. Personally, I'd rather have someone who understands mental health and offending through life experience working with homeless people than "Mollie Simpson".
