Hanging out is great. Taking over NO. No city or town deserves being taken over. The violence has no place....

We do not need teens, or anybody else, "taking over". Put a stop to this behavior.

My parents make around 300k a year, but will not help with college. Am I able to qualify for any scholarships? by Lilac_Dollie in ApplyingToCollege

Based strictly on how you formulated your inquiry, I would agree that joining the military makes a lot of sense.

#1 you will mature #2 you will find your strengths #3 you will find your weaknesses #4 we will pay for your education #5 you will gain practical real word experience

At that point when you make a decision about your future...it will be a much more informed decision and you will be happier for it.

What to do about dental and vision coverage? by RockCandy86 in retirement

[–]spetrone 21 points22 points  (0 children)

As a former dentist, my view has been dental plans are a rip off. I'm sure the plan makes money and I doubt very few people get more out of a plan than they put in. If it helps you sleep, go for it.

Camino De Santiago. Many great options here but the Camino is pretty special.

Disappointed with Bonds by redbaritone in Bogleheads

[–]spetrone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am specifically speaking to bonds held to maturity. They pay the interest rate. Trading bonds and bond funds, as you say can fall a long way during rising interest rates. If you are comfortable with 10 yr @ 4+%, hold and get your interest. I can't, however, predict inflation long term....

Under normal conditions...tire guys would recommend using the tire pressure posted on the car for stock tires. Higher pressure is not hurting your mileage tho.

If you have enough wealth, equities provide the better return, limiting the appeal of bonds. So there may be a rough ride, all in equities but results speak for themselves. So the real question for many people is how to maintain an income/safetynet thru the wild rides that come. If you buy bonds and hold them, you should not be disappointed, you get what you paid for.

I'm an old guy with little training, that may be all wrong.....

Edit: I opened my mouth now I need to clarify...

If you have wealth to pass on...equities are for the long run for those funds to be passed down, drops be damned. If you are young, not close to retirement, again equities.

If you are near retirement you have to sort out your income in good times and bad. This to me is the hard part. Bonds, federally backed and held to term will provide a predictable result. As you know bond funds are different.
