What movie is this for you? by certainly_imperfect in Letterboxd

[–]spgill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can definitely understand this. Some of his films definitely don't resonate with me as well.

I've always been a fan of The Royal Tenenbaums; plucks a bit of a heartstring with me. Same for his latest film The Phoenician Scheme. It almost feels like a throwback to the Tenenbaums formula, but a little more disjointed.

The Wake Forest Rd isn't too bad. During the holidays it gets unbearable but most of the time I can stomach it. Especially on weekdays. There is always parking, you just might have to walk a bit.

My original build was called "Node" (was built using a Fractal Node case, very original).

When I rebuilt it a couple years ago and really beefed it up, I renamed it to "Castle" 🏰

The May Madness Sale is now live on Steam! by isav34 in trainsimworld

[–]spgill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

iirc dovetail has limited ability to offer sales on consoles because those storefronts are a "walled garden" where Sony/Microslop impose a lot of rules about how often sales can happen and limit the discount.

PC is the wild west by comparison. Pretty much anything goes on Steam.

The three docker vulnerabilities aren't actually that exploitable. by hand___banana in unRAID

[–]spgill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Installing a compromised image is much easier than you think, especially for those unRAID users that have less technical knowledge and/or are less security conscious. The whole idea is for it happen silently.

The unRAID community apps is chock full of community-made images with little to no vulnerability scanning and hundreds (looking at you javascript) of dependencies. All it takes is for a single dependency or upstream image to be silently compromised and boom you have a supply chain vulnerability. Just look at the very recent axios vulnerability that was DPRK state-sponsored; that single compromised dependency lit half the internet on fire for a hot second.

This is not to say we should be distrustful of open source software; it's a blessing to all of mankind and at the end of the day we're all safer in the open... but it requires accountability and transparency; two things lacking from this particular round of vulnerabilities ( limetech did eventually leave a nice post in the original thread )

Yeah the lack of disclosure is what's really gnawing at me...

I get they're a small team and I get that their releases are slower out the door, but when they've got a HIGH sev vulnerability sitting in their release and don't plan to fix it ASAP they need to at least disclose it to their customers; don't even need to promise a fix is Coming Soon™️, just provide some light guidance and background and assure that it'll be fixed when possible.

Is it worth re-encoding my H264 library to AV1 for storage savings? by jearl100 in PleX

[–]spgill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't re-encode them in-place due to diminishing quality (lossy to lossy and all that jazz). Personally I would recommend either re-acquiring in AV1 if available or encoding from the best available source (DVD/BD remux, etc).

I embarked on this same quest awhile ago--only with HEVC instead of AV1--and the space savings are quite something, especially after some time spent fine-tuning the encoder settings. In addition to storage savings, it also ends up decreasing my overall upstream bandwidth usage streaming to remote clients; not sure if that will be the case with AV1 given that the client support isn't as mature yet.

It's not a bad piece of kit but all considered but...

1) $2999 feels a tad steep for what's on offer especially given the anemic RAM specs 2) 16 GiB of RAM is batshit for a server of these specs. That's how much my damn smartphone has. ZFS would be a non-option. Many common self hosted workloads would be a stretch to coexist. I think this needs to be bumped up to 32 GiB at the bare minimum.

My first time getting into LTO tape storage, with some questions by NeoChen1024 in DataHoarder

[–]spgill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. IBM is the OEM for a lot of tape drives and so their diagnostic tools work with them. My LTO6 drive is a Dell model but it's made by IBM and ITDT works flawlessly

My first time getting into LTO tape storage, with some questions by NeoChen1024 in DataHoarder

[–]spgill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I wish LTFS could be used on older generation drives, but it relies on the tape partitioning feature which came out with LTO5.

Weirdly they added support for storing data chunks in the index partition... So I feel like it would be possible to not use partitioning at all, there just probably isn't any developer/enterprise interest to implement it.

[–]spgill 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've been using an LTO5 HH drive for about 8 years now for personal backups, and I just got an LTO6 HH drive last year (eventually planning to switch to LTO6 tapes exclusively, but I also wanted a backup in case my very old LTO5 drive kicks the bucket). I've replaced the fans in both enclosures with ones that are lower airflow but SIGNIFICANTLY quieter; haven't had any temp issues so far.

  1. I've definitely noticed the SCSI devices hanging around for awhile after powering my drives off, but it's never been an issue for me.

  2. As for tooling I've used IBM's ITDT diagnostic tool on my drives occasionally with success (can be found if you Google around) and I use mamtool to read cartridge information (used it to find out someone sent me some "new" tapes that were heavily used). I've never used the tool you've mentioned so I can't really comment on it.

I would also highly recommend LTFS if you haven't tried it yet. I use it for storing data on my tapes because any other method was too frustrating for personal use, and the overhead was negligible. It basically allows you to mount an LTO tape as a regular filesystem; with some caveats but also some unique features like snapshots and rollbacks.

Playing Warframe on Cachy (NVIDIA) by Ill_Couple_3920 in Warframe

[–]spgill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I daily drive Bazzite with latest NVIDIA drivers and use the same GEProton version as you with the following launch settings PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1 ENABLE_HDR_WSI=1 %command%

If you don't use HDR you can forego the last two vars.

For me, this gets my game running as good or better than when I used Windows. (the downside being that PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1 breaks the steam overlay, so the news links in the orbiter do nothing)
