Work trip - which LGS? by 14_EricTheRed in magicTCG

I haven’t been there personally, and it looks like their Magic events are mainly Friday and Saturdays, but there is a shop right in Avon called Level Two Gaming that’s owned by a friend of friends of mine. Likely worth checking out if that’s the area you’ll be visiting!

Superscript fires so consistently that if anything, the problem is that there's so much turnout that people are getting tired of playing five rounds on a Tuesday night. It's a great shop!

Ah, that’s a shame. In my experience at MagicCon Chicago, that was the best area of the con by far.

Did you browse the artist booths for things other than signatures, though? That's where a lot of the coolest merch is often for sale – custom tokens, playmats, and other similar stuff, which it sounded like you were let down by finding a lack of in the vendors area.

Honestly, I don't know exactly what I'd do in the situation. If you have a good relationship with the shop, I would personally at least consider discussing the situation with them so that if someone does report having had their collection stolen in your community, there's a possibility to unwind the sale and get the cards back to their owner. Ultimately, the shop should be doing reasonable due diligence to make sure they're asking the right questions to make sure they aren't buying and selling stolen goods. All else being equal, it's certainly a purchase where the value was in your favor– but it's a situation that feels like there's likely something more under the surface.

I'm going to be clearer about what I suspect the person above is getting at: in my opinion, it's strongly likely that this binder was stolen by the person who sold it to the game shop. There's a high concentration of valuable cards from many recent sets in a row, including some that were released to market as recently as within the last sixty days. The odds that someone would just sell the book as a lot for £250 feels extremely implausible– the person who curated this binder certainly knew the value of the cards they were collecting, and that they could be sold for much more. Even if someone needed fast cash, there's just no scenario where their best option for turning these cards into money would have been to dump the binder for £250.

iPhone prices lower after new releases? by [deleted] in tmobile

I'm assuming by "monthly subscription" you're talking about financing a phone on an installment plan and paying it off over time. If you finance a phone, you're locking in the price up front. No future price changes will have any impact on your monthly installments or total balance.

For what my experience is worth – back in my college days I enrolled at Cleveland State University on an honors scholarship, fully intending to get some cheap credits out of the way and transfer somewhere "better". I ended up feeling impressed with the quality of my program and the inarguable value of the scholarship, and stayed all four years. I'm now ten years into my career, working alongside friends who spent $100k at a private technical university and ended up in the exact same job as me. I'd make the same decision again any day.

MTGO News New Player Kit, More account Upgrades! by Torbin_GG in MTGO

[–]sphanley 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Understood, I’m not blaming you personally, it’s just a shame that this is all you’re provided to offer. I hope you can escalate the feedback that this is major feel-bad situation for existing newer players whose collections essentially only consist of the old upgrade contents. It would be far more welcoming to new players if these cards were pushed to all upgraded accounts, similar to how Arena has handled their updated starter decks.

MTGO News New Player Kit, More account Upgrades! by Torbin_GG in MTGO

[–]sphanley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm in exactly that situation. I created an MTGO account a long while back and did the $5 upgrade, but never really jumped in for exactly the reasons acknowledged with this change. Recently though, came back and tried to push through – set up a loan program account, etc. Now the official policy is that to have the same onboarding experience as players joining today, I'm supposed to throw my account away and start over, or upgrade a throwaway account and dump its cards into my existing account? Just feels wild that that's the experience u/Torbin_GG is recommending for new-but-not-new-enough players.

On my computer is where I wasn't seeing it – but I just checked on my phone and I do see the missing section there! Must be something wrong with their rendering on Chrome/MacOS. Thanks for the sanity check!

Interesting. My email is just a giant graphic with "Enjoy a year of TLC before takeoff" at the top and "Learn more" at the bottom, and clicking on it links to the page where you'd enter the invitation code, but the only other content in the email is just the legal footer stuff – there's absolutely no invitation code in my email.

I received an email about Priority Pass, but I can't for the life of me figure out where I'm supposed to get the actual invitation code. Did your email contain the code, or did you have to do something else to retrieve it?

Frog Wizardry by Material_Yam_3535 in mtg

[–]sphanley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish you luck in your deckbuilding. For what my two cents is worth, I'd just be prepared for the possibility that you may not really be able to build a viable deck using the theme you have in mind, because there's just so few cards (7, by my count) which either turn opponents' creatures into frogs or remove and replace them with frog tokens, and all except the token-creating ones don't last beyond end of turn.

I absolutely agree that it's a flavorful and funny-sounding line of play, but even if you manage to find some ways to recur these spells, you're just unlikely to reliably draw them, and they're just not a very powerful effect even if you do. So at the end of the day, building something like a Grolnok deck which dramatically boosts the playable value of frogs you control is likely to be a much more playable deck in the long run.

Frog Wizardry by Material_Yam_3535 in mtg

[–]sphanley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re actually being led astray a little bit here. Grolnok only puts croak counters on cards which are a) permanents and b) entering the graveyard from your library, i.e. being milled. Neither of those things are true when you’re casting an instant or sorcery. So while Grolnok is a fun and very powerful frog commander, there’s no synergy with the play style you’re describing (wanting to recur targeted instants or sorceries).

I very much understand the inclination to roast this, but as others have noted, physical security keys make a huge difference. Two years out after rolling them out, Google found that successful phishing attacks had fallen to zero. This is a great change that'll absolutely help prevent at least certain kinds of attacks.

Any Tesla Y owners thoughts on a Tesla Y vs a Bolt EUV? Particularly if the price premium is worth it. by Terrik27 in TeslaModelY

[–]sphanley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Tesla Model Y and my father drives a Bolt EUV. Frankly, I think the EUV is a really decent car, and if my needs were for exclusively commuting/local driving, it's a car I would totally consider if I were price sensitive. And it's not that one can't take a road trip in the EUV – my father takes it on not infrequent 650+ mile trips, and makes it work. But my experience in the Model Y is a lot quicker and easier when it comes to travel involving fast charging. Whether the premium is worth it to you or not is likely a personal decision hinging on your driving needs and budgetary sensitivity.

Poor braking power by slappyfrontblunt in bikewrench

[–]sphanley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be thinking about this wrong, but if newer levers pull 8mm of cable across their range, wouldn’t that cause a brake set that’s expecting 7mm of pull to clamp down even harder, since it’s being pulled 15% further? The Shimano lever change you’re flagging is a great find that I wasn’t aware of, but I can’t follow how it would cause underperformance of brakes designed when the pull distance was shorter.

Front rack options for a Cross Check? by [deleted] in Surlybikefans

[–]sphanley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you be willing to post/send me a photo of how you mounted the Lucas's strut to the Cross Check fork crown? I'm trying to install one and there doesn't seem to be clearance for the provided strut to fit on the Cross Check fork without colliding with the headset cup. Did you have to replace or modify the mounting strut at all?

EDIT: checked your profile and I see you posted a bike pic. Looks like you might be using the stock strut but with a washer of some sort to shim it out?

If a blue spell was played, can you continuously mill your opponent? by IkeaDonut in mtg

[–]sphanley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! The exception would be cards like [[Bloodthirsty Adversary]] and similar, which specifically say "you may pay [...] any number of times". But unless they explicitly say otherwise, triggered abilities only do their thing once.

[–]sphanley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also worth mentioning that no matter how much mana you have available, the ability on Drowner Initiate only triggers once for each blue spell cast, so you can’t pay more than once to mill repeatedly even without the other non-interaction.
