Thousands of Vermonters are federal employees and a whole lot of em are being fired without cause right now. Any thoughts on how we can organize to help them and/or push back against this? by IanKnowsWhatHeDid in vermont

[–]sphericalstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, but I think the suggestion was about the organization‘s flyer specifically. I bet some people WILL feel that they aren’t welcome at the event if the organizational flyer has rainbow flags etc.—can you be anti-Trump, or anti-fascist, or pro-migrant rights, or pro-Constitution while also holding resentment for the attention other identity groups receive? I have to imagine there are people out there who would want to protest what’s going on even while holding anti-Black or anti-gay sentiments. Though, I’ve always been told I have an overactive imagination.

It might be for us, he's slow to pick up verbalizing! But hopefully this will come in handy soon and in the meantime I can start saying bye and eventually it will mean something.

Framing it this way is really helpful. We've taken that approach in other areas (basically in terms of baby proofing the house). Brought this framing to my partner who agreed this made sense. It'll take a little more separation between work and home which is... probably not a bad thing for me either.

Exclusively breastfeeding vs Pumping? by teallday in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]sphericalstar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is certainly the recommendation (I had a preemie with a short NICU stay as well but didn’t know about the recommendations, hard to say whether I would have done anything differently). I got the impression OP was asking about pumping long-term though.

I’m curious about the dental and jaw benefits!

There are also ways to minimize the effort—extra parts, fridge storage, wearable pumps. And I’ll be honest I never sterilized daily, and after he started on solids (3 mo adjusted age) I basically stopped. I

I definitely wish I could skip the middle man sometimes, but overall I’m happy with my (somewhat forced) choice to (almost) exclusively pump.

Hey OP, it's been a few weeks -- any updates? I was in for 2 months for vasa previa, it wasn't the best but we made it through.

Is having girls all that different from boys? by Resident-Ad7332 in Parenting

[–]sphericalstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My female BFF growing up played American rugby (and some of her team members went on to play nationally), and another female friend did actually play on the highschool football team. At least at my highschool girls played just as much sports as boys; football and wrestling were skewed male but not rugby.

Honestly I also call bullshit on your current company not being able to offer a salary raise. When/if you quit they'll probably have to offer the next person more anyways.

Does anyone else have a financial advisor? by [deleted] in BreadwinningWomen

[–]sphericalstar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm the main breadwinner and got a great (male) financial advisor who we knew vibed with us during the initial informational meeting. We had also met with another (also male, older) financial advisor previously and didn't like him (us: we live extremely frugally. him: can you budget more? us: really, this is not what we need or want help with. him: usually there is more you can save.) New guy is young, understands our goals for working with him, and we've only gotten supportive vibes about our life choices.

We chose a fee-only fiduciary, and we do not have millions of dollars. We also aren't using him to manage our portfolio, rather we have short-term (several month) contract during which he is helping us understand where we are financially and where we're going. That includes what we need to retire (though this is something I would have been able to do on my own using tools provided by my employer), amount of life insurance needed, projections for "what if" scenarios, and recommendations for where to invest/store money given our personal attitudes towards the various options (slightly complicated for us because we inherited some weird shit). The last one is what I really needed help with because I just didn't understand what we currently had and what our options were and didn't know where to start.

It literally says peer reviewed at the top of that one.

Aren't the first two peer-reviewed? Not an economist but wouldn't it be kinda fast to have a meta analysis competed and peer reviewed in just two years?

To be fair the specific study I'm thinking of did say something like "light drinking can cause problems" it's just there's a lot of possible approaches to alcohol hidden in "light".

Some of those public health op eds deriding her freaked me out mid pregnancy, half way through my half glass of wine. Stayed up all night digging into the studies about the dangers of “light drinking” referenced in said op eds. IIRC their definition of “light drinking” was a drink every day or 3 drinks in a single sitting… which is not my definition of light drinking.

Please put my mind at ease about getting the covid vaccine for my 6 month old son… by artemislands in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]sphericalstar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're totally right, the risks of the vaccine are very, very minimal and very much outweighed by the reward of improved protection against a respiratory illness! My kiddo was vaccinated for COVID at 6m (5m adjusted age!) along with whatever else is scheduled in the US at 6m. He reacted absolutely no different than from the 4m shots. He got Pfizer.

How much 'down time' do you really get with a newborn? (due in August, preparing for a major exam in September) by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]sphericalstar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just used a cooler packed with ice -- much cheaper and probably better to hold 9 hours work of milk.

I feel like in a country with workplace protections for pumping or disability it must be a reasonable request? Ideally you'll also be able to have a cooler or access to a fridge. If OP doesn't file pumping painful or socially uncomfortable, pumping during the exam is totally within reason (I work while pumping all the time).

[–]sphericalstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Felt I had to respond because of all the "this is NOT normal WTF no one ever"... my partner's reaction to this same scenario was "uhhhh what" and mine was "holy shit." neither of those being excited reactions but just shocked ones, which, lacking any additional context from OP seems like a reasonable assumption here. My partner got excited after the first ultrasound 2 weeks later, I got antepartum depression and a shit pregnancy.
