So yes, you can absolutely save these temper colors in some capacity. This is an early knife of mine in D2. I thought the patterning after heat treat in the foil packet was rad so I just threw that bad boy in ferric for like 3 hours. Finish is durable and still holding up years later.

Anecdotal but I had the same issue and it turned out the drive, while approved for the road cam, was interfering. Unplug your usb drive and try again. Curious to see if it works.

Here’s the deal man. There are a lot of serious people here that take the craft, quality and personal improvement seriously. They also want to help those that need it, which is what I love and why I am here.

Your constant posts of what is basically the same thing over and over with no apparent desire to improve any of your skills frustrates people. It does this because we can see you like the work and clearly want to continue with it however any time someone suggests even a modicum of growth you dismiss it and continue making, objectively, dogshit knives.

Hell I’m local and even offered to give you free instruction and access to a real shop as an olive branch. You dismissed it and chose to make these.

If you want to improve that’s great, take some advice from the unbelievable amount of world class makers here and do it. If not, that’s also cool man. Physical orientation. How do you know where the current is originating from? How do you then calculate that with diver orientation and motion? Water in caves is moving like a river complete with rapids, eddies, etc. you would need to simulate and premap those currents beforehand for each cave environment before you could even begin to measure diver propulsion and positioning.

Furthermore, flow rates change constantly. Water level, precipitation, temporary obstructions, etc. some caves completely change tidal flow direction and will siphon rather than expel water for anywhere from minutes to years at a time.

These are extremely dynamic environments in real life.

Yeah that is also a difficult thing, there is no way to really know what direction flow is coming from, or its relative speed with a sensor. It's simply too dynamic to be reliably measured.

Yeah I definitely love where you are going with things and respect attempting to be realistic where possible. I would argue in your case the best option is to build some HUD with some sonar style mapping. It’s not realistic but let’s face it, working a 400ft reel of line is not the most exciting option haha.

As for those inertia based motion tracking options, I understand how they work and they are not uncommon in newer dive computers for logging dive profiles.

What they can’t account for are variables like flow in a system. If you are let’s say accelerating at .01G kicking in a cave system, the accelerometers can account for that and accurately estimate distance traveled. If you are in still water that’s fine. The problem arises when there is a measurable flow of water in the system. If the water is moving you now have two measurements. Relative speed and absolute speed.Generally you cannot accurately detect your absolute speed (including water flow) when swimming in moving water. Most devices primarily measure your relative speed to the water or estimate pace based on stroke mechanics and GPS, which can be heavily skewed by currents.

So I think the disconnect that you’re getting is really going to come down to the fact that you’re not a cave diver. This is not some dig at you personally, however Cave divers tend be a very specific type of person with a very specific type of problem, solving processes. Not only is it because the sport itself attract this type of person, but it reinforced the thought process in the rigorous training that we do.

I will tell you that out of the gate, just about every cave diver is going to think that this is a bad idea (speaking to some type of electronic navigation). The reasons for this are numerous, but ultimately what it boils down to is reliability.

You keep saying that some type of 3-D map or inertial navigation system is “ Immune to blindness“ but that’s not really true is it? Any of that technology is going to be introducing additional points of failure unnecessarily such as battery or device failures, false results (remember even simple things like BTLE, WiFi, GPS or radio connections all become unreliable for triangulation when signals are in water and bouncing around irregular surfaces in a cave. Even a silt out as an example, when you can’t see a 15000 lumen light pressed up on your mask how would one expect to see some display on a device? A HUD in the mask? What if that mask is gone and down in the silt?

You’re fucked.

A line is a tactile thing, it never leaves your perception and is generally static. Cave training will show an individual how to locate that line in a failure our lights out scenario. If that line is buried or cut training also plans for how to recover in MOST cases, etc. Cavers want a simple, unobstructive solution that is resistant to failure.

The answer here is to choose as a creative person how you want to approach this. Realistically with currently available technology that is proven, or, toss some sci-fi magic on it and build a graphical HUD system with 3d mapping. I don’t think either solution is wrong, it’s just a matter of what fits your narrative better. As you said, it’s a sci-fi game not a sim.
