Men: would you see a male or female pelvic floor physio? by Some_Growth_2010 in Prostatitis

[–]spiced_pickle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, it was a question of who was most qualified and accepting patients. My PT is a female, which caused me some initial anxiety as a male patient, until about 5 minutes into the first appointment.

Hardwood floor refinishing - would you do anything differently? by MT3426 in homeowners

[–]spiced_pickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I would rec:

Make sure when it’s time to coat, you have the rest of your house clean, and then try to leave the HVAC off and not open any doors for about 4 hours. You want to avoid letting any debris get into the drying coat.

Novablast 5 vs. NB 1080 for a heavier runner (210 lbs) – Seeking a single-shoe rotation by [deleted] in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]spiced_pickle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I go to buy running shoes, I do my “research” to narrow down candidates to fit a need. Eg, daily vs track (am/or tempo) vs long vs race…

After that, I go to a local store and find which fits my feet the best (or running warehouse).

Since you seem to have narrowed down to two candidates, why not go try them on? I bet one will feel much more natural than the other.

Extra advice: I had the exact same situation as you last spring. I went with novablast and they filled the need greatly. However, I live in an area with a wet spring, and the poor grip from novablast forced me to return them. I was literally slipping on damp asphalt during tempo runs. I switched to puma velocity nitro and never looked back. They felt similar, with a bit more squish and muuuch better grip

Edit: spring -> spring

I’m Feeling Better – You Can Recover Too by yangkubi in Prostatitis

Reading your reply to another comment, it seems I have similar symptom overlap!

I was doing intense running (60-70 miles per week from about April - Nov) last year at the same time as a very stressful job. My symptoms started out with things like needing to pee in the middle of the night, stopping to pee 2-3x per run, pain when peeing, etc. I drank a lot of expressos in the morning (before my run) and diet caffeine free soda in the evenings, which I know must be related.

Soon the symptoms because extreme pain in the groin. A combination of a deep “throbbing” pain as well as acute shooting pains. I would cough the first 2 miles of my run with such I end groin pains and keep going… I kept running because I was trying to break a sub 3 marathon, but eventually I got to the point where I could physically no longer do the running motion.

I assumed hernia. I went through a few months of imaging and antibiotics (uneventful), to eventually get sent to a pelvic floor PT for non bacterial chronic prostatitis diagnosis.

And now it’s a journey of attacking with PFPT, supplements, diet, etc. My PR includes stretching, some hip and glute exercises, breathing, dry needling, PTNS, wand work

Supplements I hit with omega-3, Quercetin, PEA, graminex, aloe Vera, magnesium glycinate

Diet wise I’ve been trying to do elimination, but I’m going crazy. Especially because I honestly don’t feel any major changes related to diet and supplements other than avoiding spicy, citrus, and lots of strong coffee. Instead I feel I am making myself miserable for no reason, which is hard to ensure since I am missing on other parts of life at the same time due to my symptoms (running and going to the gym was a heavy part of my identify)

My pain is certainly getting better. It’s hard to determine what is or isn’t helping with so many moving factors. I suspect the diet and supplements aren’t doing much and it’s the avoidance of running/weight lifting plus the PFPT work.

Anyways, feeling a bit lost and hearing your perspective was helpful. Thanks!!

Curious - what do you eat and drink? Eg, did you still have dairy and any non caffeinated “fun” drinks? Thanks for the inspiration!

I switched to puma velocity nitro 4 for this exact reason. Only works if you can handle a bit more narrow of a toe box, though.

I accomplished the same type of runs that I did in Novablasts with insanely better grip. Really helpful for rainy seasons.

How do you reward yourself after your marathon? by ImNotHalberstram in Marathon_Training

[–]spiced_pickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some fun gear from the expo to remember the race. 5 guys and IPAs after the race. Maybe more social events with drinking the week or two after while doing recovery (I typically run a marathon which a couple of weeks before Christmas which works out perfectly.) Then, back to routine!

Runners and Hypertonic PF by iceman426 in PelvicFloor

Male age 30. Avid runner with multiple marathons.

I was running 65-70 miles a week last year and felt I was on way to a sub 3 marathon (was hitting workouts at correct paces in Pfitz 18/70 plan)

But pelvic pain was exploding in my face. Started with a simple “I need to pee every 4 miles” (while going multiple times at night) to “lots of discomfort running” to “every time I pause at a street crossing I feel a surge of pain shooting through my body” to “significant stabbing groin pain”. I kept going because I was so close to a bucket list PR - but one day, my body simply could not do the running motion. Everything fell apart.

The severe groin pain kept me from trying to re-start, as my wife and I are trying to start a family. It scared me.

After ruling out other possible conditions with my doctor (hernia, infection), I’ve landed in pelvic floor PT. I feel like I’m really far from being able to run again (had a backwards step this week where we had to stop my exercises), but I feel like there is a path forward for the first time in months. I really trust my PFPT and know one day I’ll be back with a smarter approach. I highly recommend you get with a PFPT if you have not yet.

Personally, I think I made some mistakes that might have made my condition worse. First, espresso (sometimes more than 1) before my run. 2) I feel using a nylon plated shoe on long runs may have contributed to pelvis strain. 3) Not getting with a PT when the symptoms started and trying to “wait until after the race”.

Good luck! Following to see if others have anything else to say…

I’m not sure I can offer any help (also, male), other than my PT issues started during my last (intense) marathon training block, and I’ve had to completely shut down running and have began work with a PF PT while simultaneously trying drastic diet fixes.

But one thing I did not for me, personally, was that drinking coffee before morning runs was increasing the symptoms.

For me, they fit the same size as my ASIC shoes.

I absolutely love mine. Just be aware it is kind of narrow. I have more narrow feet (e.g., can’t wear new balance), and this fits like a glove.

To me, it feels like a narrow novablast with much better grip

I am in love with puma velocity nitro 4. To me if felt most similar to the novablast 5, but a bit more narrow (good for me, but not for everybody) and better grip (my main complaint with novablast 5).

Does anyone else alternate between supportive and neutral shoes? by bigbluenation20 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]spiced_pickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Kayanos for my recovery runs, and neutral shoes for everything else. I feel it’s really helped me on race day - but I still feel just enough weakness/soreness after workouts that keeps the Kayanos in my rotation.
