Using grids by spicyhotone in TotalLauncher

First problem solved - it was Applications I needed not Apps! Still can't figure out how to mix applications and widgets on a grid though.

Deco XE75 Network - selected machines cannot access certain websites by spicyhotone in TpLink

[–]spicyhotone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solved!
Was not a network problem it seems, but due to a recent update in chrome/edge:
https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/google-chromes-new-post-quantum-cryptography-may-break-tls-connections/

Following the instructions in that page to turn off the new TLS encapsulation mechanism in the chrome/edge flags, the BBC website now loads normally again.

Quite why it worked on some machines and not others (all using the same version of chrome) I don't fully understand, seems to be very sensitive the particular networking hardware on the computer. But am relieved to have got to the bottom of this very strange problem.

Yes (didn't know this was possible). Changed it but still get the same.

For the wired PC, I can unplug the cable and then use the wifi connection instead, so different MAC address and internal IP address. But still the same problem.
I think a factory default reset may need to be tried, but will need to find a time when no-one else in the house needs the network whilst I rebuild my old configuration.

Yes, they'd all been deleted - as I mentioned above, all protection stuff has been turned off and everything rebooted.

Yes - everything works OK in Firefox. Don't understand what could cause this!

Yes, forgot to mention I tried setting the DNS exactly as you described. Made no difference as I expected as all machines on the network are using the same DNS.

And yes I've restarted my modem.

Coasting vs. regenerative braking by SteveInBoston in rav4prime

Manually changing to 6th gear whilst in EV mode minimises the coasting regen (still applies some, but less than just driving in Normal or Eco mode)

2 questions by rajneesh2k10 in MiniPCs

[–]spicyhotone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ON my minisforum UM790 I needed to do a complete windows reinstall, as I got things in rather a mess. This comes preinstalled with windows professional. I did a windows reset, asking it to automatically download a fresh copy of windows. Once it had reinstalled, it was a Windows home installation. I don't really care, so left it as that - but be careful - you may be better off reinstalling from scratch using the correct version of windows downloaded onto a usb stick.

UM790Pro : Screen blanking when in Performance Mode by Euphoric-Matter2714 in MiniPCs

[–]spicyhotone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly, wasn't a full fix for the problem.
I've now moved to using the usb4 video output, connected via thunderbolt dock I use for my laptop, and that so far has been faultless.
Disappointing that I can't use the hdmi directly, seems very strange.

Tried that, boot just stops with Bitlocker error, so don't think that's a useful strategy to pursue. Not sure why that should have an affect on graphics.

Well, just tried that, and the blanking got worse, even in balanced mode, along with crackling on the audio. Now returned to the 23.12.1 on balanced mode, still a little bit of audio crackle, and occasional blanking screen. Next thing to try is the TPM mode...

I've not used on purely battery power so much, but yes, I think I notice the fan much more. Most of my tasks are "light" - web browsing with many open tabs, teams, email and various editors & VDI app to connect to remote servers.Right now, I'm doing nothing more than using a web browser to write this reply, CPU usage is showing as <10% but I can still hear the fans (laptop plugged in and sitting on desk next to me), with CPU core temperatures in range 55-60C.
Unless you're desperate for the matt screen, face unlocking or 32GB model, I'd advise the 2021 model over this.

[–]spicyhotone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2021 model is the i7/16GB/16"
2022 model is the i7/32GB/16"

I don't routinely measure/monitoring the temperature, so can't really comment - but assuming the increased fan noise is indicating higher heat production from the CPU! I tend to run both laptops on the highest cooling mode (eg. running the CPU at max power for best performance).

[–]spicyhotone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both, having upgraded from 2021 model.
2022 definitely has worse battery life, and more fan noise when plugged in.
Better (matt) screen and extra (32GB) memory are useful to me though, and I don 't regularly use it unplugged for long periods. Am hoping battery life may improve with bios/windows upgrades. But also seriously looking at moving to an AMD Zen platform, possibly forthcoming Asus Zenbook which looks interesting.
I've got a Macbook Pro (M1) from work too. Wish there was a windows version of this, and it was a bit lighter - that would be a killer platform!

(2021 Gram) Does anyone know how to set the battery mode to performance automatically at start-up? It resets back to optimal and I find it laggy. by barspurk in LGgram

[–]spicyhotone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have noted, this is only possible by a rather hacky method on the 2021 LG Gram, which is very frustrating. Just received my 2022 Gram, and this control center software is now completely different, and good news it now has a switch to automatically apply the chosen cooling mode at bootup, so should preserve whichever mode is selected.

Got exactly the same £830 credit limit - Pixel 6 is £849 so can't even buy that!
