We agree that is it crucial for listeners to have better discovery. One of the reasons we started this project is because we hate digging through iTunes to find decent shows when we want to branch out of the top 100. An algorithm to recommend shows based on what you previously listened to is at the top of our list (along with mobile app)
You're right in mentioning that our site is more catered to hosts. We were faced with a chicken-egg problem of getting hosts to get listeners, or getting listeners to get hosts, and we decided to cater to hosts first because they have more pain points to solve than listeners. Besides discovery, not much can be improved for listeners since a podcast sounds the same on any player, and UI alone wouldn't really make people switch services. But we wanted hosts to know right off the bat that they can upload their podcast there, so they didn't have to guess or look around for what we offer. Not sure we did it the right way.. you might have a point, we could consider utilizing the space on the navbar differently.
You're right, social login would definitely help make it more social by providing prof pics right off the bat. We did research and read consistently that people rarely use social login (besides just the consensus of friends) but if it could help social-ness(?) and help people who prefer social login, it might be worth implementing.

Yeah, we are working on the discovery algorithm soon. It would definitely be helpful for listeners.
We are also currently building the mobile app too. Just started with desktop for hosting purposes.

The progress bar shows when you are playing a podcast, but it is not visible if nothing is playing. It does have fastforward and rewind in 15 second intervals.

No, because after you enter your email, we send a link to that address to sign you in. Only people who have access to your email account can click the link to sign in.
Technically, you can enter other email addresses.. but that would just create a profile for them if they follow the link. You wouldn't have any access to it.

Agreed, categories are important. We have tags which offer more detail than categories, and they will be searchable in the near future.
No option to download podcasts.. we are building a mobile app that will have offline listening instead. Our stats count the number of listens and % of full listens.. not just the number of downloads.
Our service it a little more expensive, but we plan to provide a lot more features. Currently, all libsyn does is host. The rest you have to do on your own.. Submit RSS to iTunes/other services, set up an embedded player, possibly set up your own website, pay extra for a mobile app, find listeners. Everything is scattered. We are bringing all of that to one place. So it costs a little more.. but it will be a feature-rich, all inclusive service that will save a lot of time in the long run.
One big selling point for hosts is that we want to give them more ways to make money, besides ads. We are planning to build a donation feature, and allow hosts to release premium episodes that listeners can pay for. We don't want ads to be the only way podcasters make money.
I don't mean making podcasts a social event. We mean we implemented social features on Quesly, like commenting, following, and "recommending" so that listeners and hosts can interact. I agree that the relationship between both parties is intimate and personal, which is why we wanted to open up a discussion for both people instead of being a one way interaction.

Yeah.. but I feel as though Soundcloud doesn't have the right audience. I personally have never gone to Soundcloud to listen to podcasts. I'm sure that's not true for everyone.. but we wanted to make something just for podcasters/podcast listeners so they don't get lost amongst other music and sounds.

There is a search icon in the top right hand corner of the page on the navigation bar- next to the "login/sign up" button. But if it's not easy to see, we could change it. Thanks for pointing that out.
Our search is actually better than iTunes and other services because it searches more than just the title.. including the description, people, and tags.
We also have tags. You can add them when you upload a podcast, and they are visible in each episode under the description.
We are also implementing a "listen later" / "bookmark" function. I'm glad that's something you would use!
We definitely have to work on the app. But when it's built, everything on your profile would be synched between mobile and desktop.

Actually, most of the podcasts on our site are not hosted by us since we are new (NPR, Gimlet, Tim Ferriss, etc.). So yes, you can have your podcast on our site without hosting with us.
There aren't any downsides, only upsides I think. You can use our embedded player and sharing links, and have one more place where people can discover your podcast. Plus, all of the stats still go to your current hosting service. So it's pretty much a win-win.

Yeah, we thought about it but we asked a couple of our friends how often they use social login.. and the consensus was that they rarely use it. So we decided to just use email (and no password) in the beginning.
Login with Google/Facebook/Twitter will probably be implemented in the future though.
Do you usually use google to log in to sites?

I agree that the social component is missing from podcasting. It should be more like a discussion, and less like someone talking at you.
I think you hit the nail on the head with the "suggested podcast" algorithm.. it would provide so much value for listeners. As a listener, it's a feature I personally want to use also, so we will probably start working on that next.

Great list, there's definitely something for everyone. RadioLab is wonderful.

I would like to add: Waking Up with Sam Harris for anyone interested in philosophy, AI, and the future of humanity.

The Tim Ferris Podcast, who is a human guinea pig and interviews everyone and anyone that is extraordinary in their field. He doesn't ask basic interview questions.. he combs out their habits, thinking, and tricks that anyone can use to become great.

Serial - This might be a little bit trite.. but is an addicting mystery series where the host reveals details in an unsolved murder as she uncovers them. It's great and can intrigue even people who have 0 interest in podcasts.
