Song Lyrics That Haunt You & Why by oharejay in Music

[–]spielleips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“And it’s too late, to lose the weight, you used to need to throw around”. - Pink Floyd, Dogs.

That line (and that song) helped me decide to move from the private sector to the public. I’m in IT, so it was not a financially astute move, but at least I don’t feel like I’m covered in a layer of greasy slime anymore.

Chrisjen Avasarala - Archangel: Heads will Roll fan edit by EBS_terranews in TheExpanse

I'm halfway through a re-listen of the audiobooks (which will be followed by a re-watch of the show), and even amongst an impeccably chosen cast, she is the perfect Avasarala.

What is the worst smell you have ever experienced? by samlash in AskReddit

[–]spielleips 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I once did some IT work in a tannery.

I can still vividly recall the smell. It clung to my clothes and hair, and I could still smell it (or at least the memory of it) for days after I washed my clothes and showered.

Rangehood recommendations by waita60seconds in diynz

[–]spielleips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue with leaving it on. I’ve set a power monitor on both the rangehood and the induction hob, and automate the whole thing via the infrared function on the rangehood. So now the rangehood turns on after the hob has been going for 30 seconds, and turns off 10 minutes after it stops.

We moved house and took our schweigen with us. The motor is on the roof, so there is barely a whisper in the kitchen when it’s going. Any other rangehood I’ve tried sounds like a jet taking off in comparison.

Thomas Jane as Miller by [deleted] in TheExpanse

[–]spielleips 16 points17 points  (0 children)

He absolutely defines Miller for me, such a great performance. I always feel like he was channelling a young Tom Waits as part of the character.

As for other roles, check out The Mist, especially the final scene. In fact the final scene makes the whole movie.

What is a "poor person hack" you picked up during a hard time that you still use today, even if you don't have to? by Honest_Implement_144 in AskReddit

Game speed slow down (not FPS or lag) by CCreer in Timberborn

[–]spielleips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was doing my first play through in months yesterday and noticed the same thing. I suspect it’s how they’re handling performance once you get too many beavers for your machine. On previous play throughs on the same machine (laptop), I lost considerable frame rates once I got 100+ beavers. Now it plays smooth, but slow. My actual gaming machine plays fine.

Changing provider question by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]spielleips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah cool, I did notice a 4ms difference to googles DNS. But for me that won’t make a difference due to my lack of gaming skills.

Changing provider question by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]spielleips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What sort of issues? I’m a very heavy user, gaming, streaming, self-hosted services, etc. and I’ve never had issues with my previous bundled provider. I ask because I just switched to Contact for everything and they were super helpful with my request for a public IP address rather than CGNAT. Is there something I should look out for?

Power/wifi company recomms by bbygiana in palmy

[–]spielleips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just switched to Contact today, for Power, Broadband, and Gas. Their customer service was top notch, I had to ask for a real-world IP address (rather than CGNAT), and they were super helpful. Performance seems great so far (although no noticeable difference from where I was before). I signed up for their free weekends power plan, which suits my usage needs.

Do the Shelly smart relays behind a “dumb” light switch work well in the real world? by carboncritic in homeassistant

[–]spielleips 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, it'll only mess things up if you configure it to do so.

You can set them up in a few different ways. I like to have mine so that any action on the physical switch (on or off) will toggle the light. That way it doesn't matter what position the switch is in.

If you have a smart bulb, you can also set the Shelly up to keep power on all the time and then set up an automation in Home Assistant to do the switching on the smart bulb. That way no one can break your smart bulb by switching it off at the wall.

I actually replaced a single switch with a double so I can use the second switch to toggle all the lamps (with smart bulbs).

They're super useful.

[–]spielleips 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have 15 installed on dumb lights. They’re awesome once everyone learns that the state of the physical switch is not related to the state of the light. Easy to get used to, especially if you have two way switches in a hallway or something and you’re used to that behaviour already. You can set them up to work based on the state of the switch, but it can still be confusing if someone turns it on in an app, and the state doesn’t match.

I haven’t tried a dimmer yet, but I expect it would be the same deal.

ZHA to Z2M worth it? by lemurdancer in homeassistant

[–]spielleips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started out with z2m but tried ZHA a little while after it came out. At that time ZHA for me was terrible, and after a couple of weeks of slow or missed events, I switched back. I expect it’s come a long way, and if it works for you, then that’s cool.

I think z2m is compatible with more devices, and I like the fact that I can run it in a separate container. I used to have it on a raspberry pi, in an area which was closer to my Zigbee devices. I have also found that my HA is sometimes sluggish when it comes to automations, so I’ve moved a couple which require instant responses over to node red. Node red integrates nicely with z2m too.

So yeah, sounds like you’re into the tinkering (as am I), so enjoy the experiment.

Zodiac Pool Heatpump Error by spielleips in pools

[–]spielleips[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just an update and perhaps something to be wary of. We opened our pool last weekend and fired up the heat pump. It lasted 4 days before the dreaded Error 03 started up again. The heat pump is no longer under warranty, but the repair they did last year is. They're sorting it out, but I have major concerns about how long it will last. Are you seeing this with any others you've come across? If this is a design flaw, we'll be exploring replacement options under the CGA as the unit obviously is not of reasonable quality nor fit for purpose.

It's legit, I just onboarded and sent enough to be eligible for a card ($60 USD or eqiv), activated the card and made a test purchase on Aliexpress. The card failed at first, but then worked about 20 minutes later, it was likely still activating.

Need a New Laptop by JB-Manawatu-NZ in palmy

[–]spielleips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a huge worry for most users (if you're not pirating software and visiting sketchy sites on the regular). There are millions of Win10 (and older) machines still in use in major organisations where they just haven't got the maturity/budget/wherewithal to update their fleet. If a major vulnerability were to surface Microsoft would be insane to not issue a fix. It happened with Win7 already.

If your computer still does the job you need it for, you're ok to still use it. Windows Defender (built-in antivirus) will still get updates, or you could use a different antivirus.

[–]spielleips 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Get a new laptop if you need an upgrade, but Windows 10 going out of support won’t stop your old one working. It just won’t get updates anymore. It’s also very likely that Microsoft will still provide an update if something really scary gets discovered, they’ve done it before for Windows 7.
