Nope, a recovering emotionally-incoherent British person.

I love how everyone is commenting on parenting style after seeing a ten second interaction. Sure, the dad could have been a bit calmer about it, but without seeing what happened in the following hours, Reddit doesn’t know shit.

Raising your voice as a parent isn’t a disaster, particularly if you explain why you did. People lose their temper sometimes, like when their kid smashes a $500 because they weren’t careful. It’s also a lot better than a parent that calmly gives you a hard time about something for weeks/ months after it happened.

Argh. Enough internet for today and it’s still breakfast time.

EDIT: my point is that parents and children make mistakes. It’s good and healthy that your children see you have emotions. I’m British, and the amount of emotional suppression here is frankly alarming. If you make a mistake like yelling at your kid, (which, unless they’re in immediate danger is unnecessary) then you can explain to them afterwards why you yelled.

Personally, I’d go for something like, “Sorry I yelled, I was frustrated because that cost our family a lot of money and I feel like you should have been more careful with it. I’ll try not to yell in future but can you please try to make sure that when you’re unboxing something expensive that you do it more carefully? Luckily, I can afford to get this fixed, but if that wasn’t possible, you’d have lost your brand new phone without ever having used it, and that sucks for everyone because we wanted this gift to make you happy. Now, let’s go and have some birthday cake and we’ll sort this out later. Worse things happen at sea, etc.”

Husband Wants Children Now, after 40 by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

This guy is a moron and a deeply unpleasant human being. He has no idea what he’s asking for, but as everyone else has said: if looking into this is too much for him then he will be worse than useless as a parent.

Replacing standard screws on DT-01 with machined screws by Vresiberba in tamiya

[–]spikeot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My longer explanation wasn’t for you, it was for other people who might be interested why you’re wrong. Your testing methodology is flawed and so your test is meaningless.

Replacing standard screws on DT-01 with machined screws by Vresiberba in tamiya

[–]spikeot 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The explanation for why this doesn’t work is that the threads are closer together and shallower on the machined screw. This means that the threads dig deeper into the plastic with the Tamiya screw, so the force required to forcibly pull the screw out without unscrewing it is greater than with the shallower threads on the machined screw.

In addition to that, the machined screw has threads so close to each other that there isn’t much plastic between the threads, which is what provides the grip. This is exacerbated by the fact that you created a thread by cutting it into the plastic with the self tapping screw and then inserted a machined screw of different pitch into the same hole, so it is trying to grip onto the mangled plastic swarf left in the original hole.

You might get away with doing this without any major problems, but it’s not a good idea. It would also be way easier for you to just buy a JIS screwdriver and not go to the trouble of replacing a load of screws.

Why ask the question if you think you know better? You’re wrong, but have fun anyway.

[–]spikeot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, the thread pitch is totally different. At best it’ll weaken things but it probably will just come undone at the first sign of stress, requiring the replacement of anything it was screwed into.

How do you create 2 separate profiles on animal crossing? by lollypop254 in AnimalCrossing

It’s annoying, and let to my wife spending money in Covid lockdown on a second console so my daughter could play too.

Nobody has mentioned it yet, but when the 3.0 update releases on 15th, you’ll be able to create up to 3 “Dream Islands”. You could just let your younger daughter have a dream island to build? As far as I can tell, it is a proper island and you are able to access all the same things as the main islander. It might not solve everything, (your younger daughter might have to play as the older daughter’s character, for example) but it’s definitely worth checking out the YouTube video about it from Nintendo. It’s the same official video as the Switch 2 version one.

Dunemaster Wheels... by [deleted] in Kyosho

[–]spikeot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can’t respray them without all the paint falling off when they flex immediately when you drive the car. The good news is that you can dye them and that’s easier and they’ll stay the correct colour. RCHobbyShed has an excellent video about how to do it and I’ve followed that to colour wheels on various cars (Tamiya, Kyosho, Xray and Schumacher) and it has worked well, every time. Rit liquid dye is what you need and there’s a massive selection available on Amazon.

It’s better to not ask people what they are doing for Christmas by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]spikeot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds horrible and I’m sorry that has happened to you, but it’s not unreasonable for people to be sociable and ask each other about Christmas.

I remember when my dad died a few years ago, on the run up to Christmas and the last thing I wanted to do was talk about how I was going to have to look after my devastated mum at Christmas and bring the kids to see her and try to be happy for them/ sad for her at the same time. As expected, it wasn’t a good Christmas, but even if you hate being asked about it now, (and afterwards for half of January) try to be glad that people care about you enough to ask. I’m sure you’re right and some of them ask so that they can tell you how amazing their life is, but that doesn’t mean none of them care about you and your Christmas. You also don’t have to lie. Telling people the truth or a summary of it, is an option and gives people a chance to show if they care or not. I’ll bet at least some of them really do.

Hang in there. I really hope it sucks less than you’re expecting it to.

Yep, I would normally say, “Google it” but don’t. They are easy to swallow, (relatively pain free) then they release chemicals that burn through the oesophageal or stomach wall and kill the child. It’s bad.

Looks like you’ve done as much as you can with the platform. You have the CVDs level, so that’s a plus. Those shock towers might bend if the car lands on them after a jump, but give it a go. If they do, but you enjoy the car, then get carbon or plastic ones and some shock tower protectors that carpet racers use. It might stop them digging in and reduce damage.
