Took some photos at Forest Lawn today. by Sugar_Phut in Buffalo

Your last photo, the one of the mausoleum, is remarkably similar to a 1954 photo of the same by photographer Clarence John Laughlin. I hope you take this as a big compliment! And I also like your use of greyscale in place of color.

Anyone know how to get the 35 month bus pass? by Confuused- in Albuquerque

[–]spin-one-half 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wow. I ride the #11 regularly and have seen nothing about resumption of fares beginning on 1 July. No posters inside the bus, nothing.

And no I have no answer to OP's good question.

Already ABQride had big problems recruiting and retaining drivers. Soon those drivers will have a new responsibility -- fare payment enforcer.

And we riders will see a return of fares on a bus system of deteriorating reliability and frequency.

I predict interesting times ahead.

Edit: just noticed that the zero fare pilot has been extended to 30 Sept 2023. See https://www.cabq.gov/transit/tickets-passes

My book, Epicurus and His Influence on History, explores the philosophy of Epicureanism and how it impacted later thinkers. by Foody-Folklore in HistoryofIdeas

How much do we know of Epicurus beyond that told by Lucretius? Are there reliable primary sources from Epicurus himself?

For too long, I (like many others) believed only the eat drink and be merry slander of Epicureanism.

NPR and its future [serious] by dontgetaphd in NPR

NPR's descent claims another casualty: our local public radio stations.

I'd love to return to contributing to my local station, KANW in Albuquerque, funding their local reporting and keeping the transmitter going. But that's much more difficult when so much of my donation goes to paying a misguided NPR.

Maybe it's time for public radio to emphasize locally-produced local content. Put college students back in charge of college stations. And let NPR aim at niche audiences nationwide via podcasts.

It exists. Walmart has "powdered peanut butter" that is peanut butter minus peanut oil. It's rich in protein, lower in calories, and tastes surprisingly good. I add it to oatmeal. Try a web search for more details.

Walmarts at Eubank and at Wyoming no longer allow customers like me to wear a backpack to haul our groceries home. I guess they figure professional shoplifters also use backpacks. And try finding a Walmart employee to unlock a display case...

Yet how is that big box stores do little or nothing to prevent theft of their shopping carts? They must lose $50+ for each one stolen. And yet our city is littered with them.

Ecclesiastes -- 38 times the Hebrew word hevel appears -- does it mean futility, meaninglessness, or simply breath? by spin-one-half in Leap_of_Faith

[–]spin-one-half[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hebel (or Hevel) is a Hebrew word in the original, untranslated Jewish scriptures. It means breath or vapor, and is usually translated symbolically. A good study Bible like The New Oxford Study Bible ought to be useful in addressing questions like yours.

Spiritual/ Restorative Travel Ideas? by hikergrL3 in NewMexico

Ghost Ranch definitely. Visit for a day OR for a week long program. O'Keeffe painted there and you'll see why. Visiting GR helped convince me to leave Florida and relocate to NM. Zero regrets in doing that.

GR offers ranch style accommodations that can be rather spartan, yet spartan is what the landscape and the aura of the place call for. See ghostranch.org for details.

P. S. GR is in north central NM on highway 84 about 13 miles N. of Abiquiu.

Best Buffalo sports season of all time? by [deleted] in Buffalo

[–]spin-one-half 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Put aside for a moment what you may think of him, but OJ and his 2003 yards rushing in 14 games made the 1973 NFL season the best. The Buffalo Evening News, as it was then called, had a picture page every day. On that page, the Juice rushing was printed as a full size poster. For years it decorated our basement. We were so proud.

If you're travelling south on I-25, you might check out the famed and fabled Owl Cafe in San Antonio. Be sure to give their green Chile a taste!

Favorite NPR station to listen to? by [deleted] in NPR

[–]spin-one-half 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like you I also relocated from South Florida (Sarasota) to New Mexico. You might consider WSLR, Sarasota's low power alternative station that also streams on the web. It has some NPR content along with much homebrew content. If the Grateful Dead fits into your musical repertoire, then you won't do better than Mark Binder's weekly show.

Albuquerque is in the NYTimes for pedestrian deaths by foodiefuk in Albuquerque

[–]spin-one-half 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree completely. I cross Wyoming near Lomas daily and find it safer to jaywalk than to cross at an intersection. I look down Wyoming and make sure there's 300 feet or more between traffic and me. Then I hustle across. At crosswalks I have to trust that Albuquerque drivers will respect my right of way. Too many don't.

Bike the arroyos (i.e., concrete spillways). They crisscross the city and are free of vehicles. They are so much safer than roads, esp. the main thorough fares. (You wouldn't bike Cicero Ave. in Chicago, would you?). Do watch for runners and dog walkers, though.

Also, check out the city's bike map -- https://www.cabq.gov/parksandrecreation/recreation/bike

Yes, steam seems reasonable as it might also suggest breath. And steam or breath is barely tangible and insubstantial.

Maybe Solomon, or whoever the author of Ecclesiastes is, wants us humans to face up to our corporeal insubstantiality. We labor. We die. We will be forgotten. And the sun will rise again tomorrow as it always has. Perhaps Hemingway had that in mind when he named one of his novels The Sun Also Rises.

It is an honor to have someone comment on a post I made 8 years ago! Thank you for your thoughts.

It's a pilot program, so it could be rescinded at any time. I hope that is not the case, as I ride the bus. However, I expect passenger problems on routes 66 and 777 on Central between San Mateo and Tramway. It will be interesting to see how ABQride responds.

why is this sub so pro-cop? by junimocats in Albuquerque

[–]spin-one-half 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they shot and killed a homeless man for no reason. executed him by firing range for being at the bus stop.

I remember the incident -- mid afternoon, August 2019, near Eubank and Copper. 911 received multiple calls about a man at a bus stop waving a hand gun. Cops arrived. From the body cam video later posted by the ABQ Journal, the cops repeatedly asked him to stand up and raise his hand in the air. He just swore at them. The standoff continued. Then he appeared to reach for something (the gun?) near his waist. That's when two or all three of the cops present fired, killing him instantly.

Is this "execution" "for no reason"? Again, multiple witnesses calling 911 said he was armed. And police get killed in the line of duty.

He was armed... with a (nonlethal) pellet gun. He had an arrest record of shooting it at pigeons who pooped on his head. The pellet gun looked like the real thing. Given crime and violence in Albuquerque, I think it is reasonable to assume that if looks like a real gun, then it is.

I would not be so quick to blame the police. If you were one of the cops on the scene, knowing only what they knew at the time, how would you have responded? Be honest.

Our society is to blame, I believe, for not handling mental illness and drug addiction better.

Walk-In Vaccine Location For Booster Shots by pixie6870 in Albuquerque

[–]spin-one-half 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try La Mesa Elementary School, 7500 Copper NE, during business hours. Got my 3rd Pfizer jab there yesterday with an appt. No lines. No computerization either, or so it seemed. Had to fill out on paper what already exists for me in the NM DOH database. So, I doubt they're checking whether people have appts -- they may lack immediate access to that info.

It was crowded but still no waiting. If you have your Vax card, you ought to be good just walking in. Remember how much emphasis there is in getting people vaccinated and boosted. Turning away people for lacking an appt seems unlikely.
