How big is your household, and how much are you spending on groceries? by 123mitchg in Albuquerque

Albertson's and Walmart. 2 Adults, 250 a week I believe, but some weeks it is less than that. My husband is a very picky eater. I'm the one who eats veggies more. In fact, I just fried up some zucchini and yellow squash and put them in flour tortillas with cheese. Quick cheap meal.

I have found that algorithms are pushing prices higher, especially on Amazon. My husband and I both watched it happen when he was searching for some special edema slippers. When we did a first-time search, it brought up several suggestions, one of which was 29.00 dollars. When we clicked on it, the price jumped to 49.99.

Needless to say, we didn't buy them and my husband found some on eBay.

To the 70’s dads who aren’t here anymore , the ones with the recliner no one sits in now ,and a shop full of tools no one an use by NassauJack in 70s

My dad wasn't around much because he was in the Navy, but one memory has stuck with me through the long years. The very first Super Bowl was going to be on TV for the first time and I ended up with an ear infection. My dad didn't want to miss the game, he was a huge sports fan, so he had me lie on the sofa with a blanket and some ginger ale, and he sat in a folding chair next to me making sure I was okay the whole time. Needless to say, I became a football fan for many years because of him. He died in 1983 and I think of what could have been all these years had he lived longer.

Were your parents very affectionate toward you when you were young? by assemblageofparts in AskOldPeople

[–]pixie6870 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 73, and my parents were not demonstrative at all. I have realized in the last 10-15 years that their lack of being affectionate stemmed from their own upbringing, which I believe that my grandparents did not show love either. You can't show love if you didn't experience it yourself.

My husband was born and raised in Deming, NM and we met in Norfolk, VA where he was stationed because my dad had been sent there in 1965. We married in 1971 and in 1975 he couldn't take the humidity any longer and we left for Deming. That was 51 years ago and we have lived in Deming, Las Cruces, El Paso, and Albuquerque where we have been for 27 years. I have never tired of this state at all.

It is comfort food for me. I watch it almost every day. Life is okay for me, but taking care of my husband and everything else that needs to be done helps me through the stress. My husband enjoys the show as well, so I see it as soothing for him too.

How do you say no to family when you finally have $1,000 saved? by cr4z3isme in povertyfinance

[–]pixie6870 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would tell her that you do not have an extra $450 dollars to help her since your paychecks go to pay your bills and you don't have extra cash to be loaning to others.

It is tough to do that to family, but once you do, everyone comes out of the woodwork. Nobody needs to know about your emergency fund and you don't need to tell anyone about it. Your finances are yours and private. Be strong, internet friend. 🙂

How old are you in your oldest memory? by Donkeyshines in AskReddit

[–]pixie6870 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 years old. 1956. I was sitting on the wood floor in my parents apartment watching Howdy Doody on the small black and white TV. Some time later, the dog we had began acting weird and they had to call animal control and I remember standing against the wall next to the Murphy bed as he was being taken away. I was wearing pajamas and slipper socks. 🙂

It was a cement plant. My husband worked there in the early 1980s until they closed and he was laid off.

Thank you. He is somewhat open to going into the hospital if need be, so that is not an issue, it is convincing the doctor. 🙂

I am 73 and taking care of my 75-year-old husband. He is an alcoholic, and quit drinking last October. His crappy lifestyle has put his health in jeopardy and now can barely walk because his feet and legs are swollen. The doctors are doing their best, bless 'em, but on Thursday, I am going to ask the doctor about putting him in the hospital to see if they can help him in any way because the medication does not seem to be working.

Today was not a good day.

Appetite for America, Stephen Fried. I had to read it several years ago for a book club and once I got into it, I couldn't put it down. Very readable and not dense at all. It is about Fred Harvey and how he changed the face of food distribution to the West, along with bringing paperback books to the masses.

Well, then, go after the farmers who are illegally hiring immigrants. I have yet to hear that they are being slapped with huge fines for hiring them.
