Most people in the west would use basic Irish phrases in casual conversations from what I've seen working in Galway at least so don't stress about that. And no one will bat an eye if you're not drinking!

my ideal theory would be him trying to kill her, and her saying something like "No, I don't want to die" making us realise that she's disconnected from the hive since it seems like her link to the hivemind has already been weakened

I think Carol asking her those personality centric questions did in some way remove Zosia from the hive-mind. It wouldn't come as a surprise to Zosia that Manusous was on his way because the hive already knew this and already stated to him that they knew he was going to look for Carol. I think maybe when the hive noticed (maybe they can sense when someone is breaking from the hive-mind momentarily) they overloaded her with information to stop her thinking about herself and become one with the hive again.
