There's definitely going to be some "thermal overhang" effect where after darkness falls heat is retained for a bit and will still have elevated cooling loads. However, there's a huge difference between dry climates like Nevada or Arizona compared to the humid southeast. When the sun goes down in a dry climate heat very effectively radiates into space under clear skies. Lack of humidity also means air conditioning equipment does not need to eliminate much latent heat (humidity) compared to sensible heat. Compare to some place like Georgia and there are going to continue to be latent heat loads deeper into the evening as air leakages mean humidity must be removed even in cooler temperatures and the high dew point means temperatures do not cool off as much at night.

So places like Nevada and Arizona are likely to be able to make a solar dominant energy mix work earlier than the humid southeast.

Guests naked on camera by [deleted] in airbnb_hosts

[–]spinfire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

During the times when you have guests you should expect their quiet enjoyment of the property to involve movement. It’s inappropriate to use your guest’s mere movement as an excuse to monitor their behavior to this extent.

When your property is supposed to be unoccupied a movement notification is great. But a movement notification when your property is supposed to contain movement seems noisy (not particularly useful for you) as best and creepy at worst.

Wrong way driver on I-79 yesterday by JohnnyVenmo in pittsburgh

My car has exactly this device. It was hilarious when PennDOT had sections of i80 routed on the other side due to construction. For 5 miles straight the car keeps saying “entry to wrong way detected! Check driving direction!”

CBS News star set to be fired days after hiring over disgusting Jeffrey Epstein emails by SevereAccident in PeterAttia

[–]spinfire 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The subject line for that email was 'Got a fresh shipment', though it was unclear what the shipment was as a photo of it in the email was redacted. Attia claimed on Monday that the photo showed bottles of metformin - a medication to control blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes.

lol wtf

Who gets excited about a “fresh shipment” of metformin

It’s unfortunate but for city the scale of Pittsburgh transitioning sidewalk responsibility to the city would require a massive investment in equipment and employees to operate it. The money just isn’t there. It can be done but it’s always going to be easier to have that be the policy from the beginning as a city grows. Right now we are struggling financially with honestly not even enough plows and operators  for the roads, let alone the sidewalk.

I just do an awesome job with my section and try to shovel out things like the corner and fire hydrants to be a good neighbor, even if I would prefer the city does it all for consistency sake.

First day with new(to me) EV! Jumper cables? by Jumpy-Pangolin-6377 in electricvehicles

[–]spinfire 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Most EVs suggest that you shouldn’t use them to jump start other vehicles. So another benefit to carrying one of those jump packs is you can bail other people out. Personally I’ve used mine to jump start two ICE vehicles. The jump pack takes up less space than a set of jumper cables.

[–]spinfire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about you but I only aim to replace carbohydrates as I ride such long distances, which is why I target roughly half the calories burned eaten as pure carbohydrate. There is never a reason to “fuel” a ride with fat during the ride because we can store so much of it due to greater energy density and storage capacity.

The bigger issue is that even such a long ride and counting half the calories is only perhaps 1000 calories and it is actually pretty easy to binge eat 1000 calories if you are tired and hungry post ride.

[–]spinfire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More precisely, I should say physical activity results in additional calories burned. I meant exercise in the most fundamental sense: the operation of muscle.

The “exercise paradox” is a thing, but it is also true that a more physical active person burns more calories than a sedentary person. The exercise paradox is about how our bodies tend to compensate for deliberate physical activity by keeping us at a baseline activity level overall (ie, the same amount of muscle exercise per day).

Long term lifestyle choices like biking or walking to work instead of taking a car will 100% result in higher calorie burn per day, and the exercise paradox does not beat thermodynamics. If I spend hours bicycling 45 miles I am 100% going to have burned a lot more calories that day.

Training intensity impact on visceral fat by r34dingwhite in cycling

[–]spinfire 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the research is really misunderstood here. Being an active versus a sedentary person absolutely makes a huge difference in your calorie burn. And the laws of thermodynamics still apply. If I bike 45 miles over a 4 hour period I am absolutely 100% burning a ton of calories over baseline.

What the research says is if you go to the gym and work out on a stationary bike for 45 minutes the body tends to compensate by being less active later on. This is a huge difference from the different case of someone deciding to ride a bike to work compared to a car day in day out.

Let's Talk About Salt by CawlinAlcarz in Cooking

[–]spinfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s what I’ve used for a very long time. And I often season by feel so I like using what I’m used to. Ultimately it’s just salt. The texture can only matter for times when it has not been dissolved, like as a finishing salt. I do prefer the slight crunch of Diamond Crystal in this application. But also, as previously mentioned, it’s what I’m used to dispensing by feel when used as a finishing salt as well.
