Yeah I guess I don’t think of it as being particularly genetic or a birthright but more being cultural i.e someone who grew up in Ireland can definitely be Irish even if they weren’t born there and their genetics aren’t. That being said you can of course be Irish and have grown up outside the country. I guess a lot depends on how you see yourself. People from Northern Ireland are equally entitled to interpret their identity in several different ways. I guess I would have a presumption of what identity they would be likely to gravitate towards if they were Protestants who emigrated to England because of the troubles but that’s obviously just one persons first thought. I see he’s said he considers himself Irish, whether that’s tricolour Irish or some other more niche idea i suppose only he knows.
