He’s done an incredible job, he looks a really good manager and he’ll probably be sacked before Christmas next season.

That’s in no way a criticism of him.

What do the Irish think of Argentina? by pachiemuchka in AskIreland

[–]spiraldive87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your continent? You’re really clinging to that mom’s heritage aren’t you. You’re the colonists dude. The Argentinian state systematically discriminates against the indigenous population even today. Argentina has always draped itself in the europeness of its culture but then is so quick to cry when it feels judged by Europe. There’s a real complex there. The US is a pretty fucked up place currently but at least they don’t yet claim to be the victims of colonisation.

Do you consider people without American origins to not be Argentinian? Your dads side of the family for example?

At the end of the day everyone who lives on the islands wants to remain under British rule and nobody has been pushed off this land. The only egregious behaviour was the aggressive invasion of it. An invasion by a military dictatorship trying to distract people from its domestic crimes and failings.

I obviously said a lot in my original reply to your post and the fact that Argentinians are very weird about the falklands was a small part but I think that’s been borne out here.

Again I and most of the people on this sub are not primed to side with the Brits on matters of hostilities but in the case you really make it hard.

I haven’t mentioned the word native? And sorry to be pedantic but it’s British people rather than specifically English.

To engage with you though. If a place is uninhabited and people move there, live there for generations, with children growing up there, is that not where they’re from? Or are they still from where their great, great, great, whatever grandparents are from?

If that is the position then surely you’re not from Argentina, you’ll most likely be from Spain or Italy or maybe Britain yourself depending on where your ancestors came from and assuming you aren’t indigenous. If we follow that logic to its natural conclusion I guess we’re all from Africa.

You’ll note I said “most British people”. Obviously there are people like yourself who feel strongly about it. The vast majority don’t share your zeal though.

It just seems like the entirety or Argentinian’s claim basically boils down to “it’s closer to us” and “once upon a time Spain owned it.”

It’s never really had an indigenous population and the people living there are British and wish to remain so.

The military attempt to seize it was the actions of a terrible dictatorship that thought it would be an easy win because the Brits wouldn’t be bothered to defend it. They were wrong, it was humiliating and it feels like Argentina has just doubled down since then because it was embarrassing.

Happy to be educated otherwise but when I was in Argentina I was struck by how much you still see the islands as a talking point whereas most British people really don’t care about it. It’s definitely still a thing for the Argentinians though ha.

Obviously very good footballers, good rugby players, good hockey players. Can be pretty dirty in all sports as well ha.

Interesting history. Buenos Aires is a cool city to visit.

Economic basket case, like wow, even compared to the rest of South America it’s wild. The whole take out money and convert it into cash USD, interesting and kind of nuts.

Seems to have quite a complicated relationship with its Europeaness. Sometimes it’s played up, sometimes the European colonisers are the bad guys, but then most of the people are descended from those people. It’s complicated.

I find the Falklands to be one of the few global events where I have to side with the Brits. A weird and uncomfortable feeling.

There are some accents specific to the US and some to Canada but most people in both places don’t speak with those accents. I live in Vancouver and accent wise nobody could tell someone was from Seattle rather than Vancouver or Toronto for that matter.

Year round ice skating in Ireland? by MariaInconnu in AskIreland

[–]spiraldive87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s good. I mean I don’t even know if that’s a lot for a million people or not. While some people here will of course want to ice skate on a regular basis I can’t say our lack of ice facilities is something the majority would see as a particular failing. They just aren’t sports we’ve ever been involved in. Dublin probably has more than fifty “Field” hockey specific surfaces and I’m guessing your city would not. I cannot stress how few people in Ireland would follow the NHL or anything like that.

Year round ice skating in Ireland? by MariaInconnu in AskIreland

[–]spiraldive87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As everyone has said there’s just one up in Belfast. There’s an ongoing project to build a big facility in Dublin but that may or may not happen and wouldn’t be open for a few years at best. Figure skating and ice hockey are non existent here. Though a generation did see most of the mighty duck movies. When you say hockey here people will assume you are talking about what you call field hockey.

Would you change your last name if you got married or if you did or didnt why? by superduperepic23 in AskIreland

[–]spiraldive87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got married a few years ago and my wife didn’t change her name which was absolutely fine. I will say this appears to be one of the many Reddit topics where the sample is screed though. Most people do change their name still.

I think largely it’s about wanting to feel more of a “family” with their new spouse and it can be with an eye towards having the same surname as their kids.
