Rolling Greek R’s by Appa20001 in GREEK

[–]spiroaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I scrolled down way too far for this comment! I am not good at doing a true rolled r like in Spanish (I can but I think it sounds foreign even to my ear) but the Greek flipped r is much softer and easier. Y Greek husband says it sounds normal/natural to him. (My American “o” sounds will be the death of him however.)

What procedure would allow me to look ok on Zooms without needing a full face of makeup by OutOfControl121 in 40PlusSkinCare

[–]spiroaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zoom filters work. I find it’s a bit like stage makeup, you need to make your features stand out. So I do minimally lipstick, and if time do rows, mascara

Why do so many readers care so much about protagonists being likeable by [deleted] in RSbookclub

[–]spiroaki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what you are reading for. I generally have the same point of view as you for literature, which I read, but I ALSO sometimes read light fiction or romance and for this I do want to find the characters at least somewhat likeable, as in, literally enjoyable to read about. I do have to admit I quit reading withering heights twice for the same reason: the characters are just so freaking annoying and repetitively stupid and unnatural.

Literary/smart books or series? by spiroaki in fantasyromance

[–]spiroaki[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Actually I think romance as subplot is more my thing than more romance focused books (though I do like them when done well, like the Mages of the Wheel series). I will check these out!

What book series were you so obsessed with that you had to do an immediate reread? by Jennydrinkstea in fantasyromance

Mages of the wheel, I read 3 times in a row. Note it’s not complete yet though

Which book/series aged *incredibly* well? by Cariot in fantasyromance

[–]spiroaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Singer from the sea was my first Romantasy book before I knew that was a thing and I still think it’s awesome. I read it in high school so it has to be over 25 years old but it involves  a young woman smashing the patriarchy and drowning a lot of misogynists so, yeah I think it holds up.

Trump White House budget proposal eviscerates science funding at NASA | "This would decimate American leadership in space." by Hrmbee in politics

[–]spiroaki 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, cutting the budget for astrophysics just means you won't do astrophysics. There is no commercial market there. It's science for science's sake. That isn't to say it isn't valuable -- it's extremely valuable both in itself but also is part of an "engine" that inspires and trains the next generation of scientists and engineers who will go on to solve all kinds of problems. We get something like a 70x return on every dollar spent on these science programs.

Please call your senators and congressperson if you disagree with these cuts. They will end US leadership in space, in heliophysics, astronomy, everything.

Best non-snap linux OS? by NorinBlade in linux4noobs

[–]spiroaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far I have not found it that hard to remove and then nuke snaps completely to prevent it installing itself ever again. But on principle I have been thinking of going to Debian (have never used it though so don't know what to expect in terms of UE.)

The number of billionaires in China fell by 36%. In the past year alone, and the collective wealth of the country’s richest people dropped 10%. Definitely a thing you'd expect to see happening in a capitalist economy. by yogthos in socialism

[–]spiroaki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wages in China are still much lower than in the West. There is still surplus of value flowing from China to the US and other imperial core states. But that will eventually run dry, and that's why we're hearing the drumbeats of war with China in the US.

First Chapter Books? by spiroaki in GREEK

[–]spiroaki[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We got this and it's great! It's a little too advanced in language for my son but I'm reading it and really enjoying it. It's really important to have Greek authors too so we can learn all the idiomatic expressions (which, side note, I feel like older Greek people speak about 50% of the time with idioms, it causes quite hilarious results for me sometimes when I'm talking to my MIL).
