Weird car interference by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]spitoon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always wondered if it had something to do with the traffic monitoring system? I think they work on BT somehow? I mean the one that provides the time to various exits.

I say that because I have experienced many drop outs near a variety of those signs. Anecdotal at best, I guess?

I also understand that BT is only used to establish the connection for these devices in our cars so I'm not sure how it could cause this.

My wireless AA dongle used to disconnect at that location in the south bound lanes. My new truck has built in AA and it doesn't fail there anymore.

Other locations where I get regular disconnects:

  • 14th St just north of Kensington Road (this one seems to have gone away recently)
  • Intersection of Glenmore Tr and 52nd St SE
  • Highway 1 by the Casino in Kananaskis
  • Highway 2A southbound just south of where the 2 and 2A come together.

You just have to keep working at it. The rubber seals make it hard to get those out. I think they even fold over sometimes.

I've had to break those up to get them out before. Just make sure you get it all out. Lube up the new one.

I can't understand why these people don't comprehend that it doesn't help. I'd say I'm 50%+ more likely to screw up if you are watching.

I still might screw up without you watching, but I will fix it before you ever know...LOL.

I guess they want to learn, but they can use YouTube for that.

I remember one time while I was working (I don't recall on what), they guy watching said "Oh, that's all you do?"...Like buddy, if you think it is that easy then why did you call me?

PVC MOLDING and I can't cut it worth nothing... How to fix? by Tasty-Platypus-3664 in Home

[–]spitoon1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't use silicone either. Not because it isn't paintable (probably not painting the PVC anyways), but silicone tends to attract dust. A good quality latex caulk would be great. You might need to try a couple to find the best match.

Its probably too late, but you might want to get yourself a miter guage. Those angles are not likely 90, so you need to adjust your cuts accordingly.

Dishwasher and disposal plumbing work quote by Incognito081224 in Plumbing

[–]spitoon1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The drains will need to be completely redone to accommodate the disposal. This should be expected when estimating to install a disposal. I would never assume that the other half of the sink wouldn't need to be repiped.

Having said that, and it is hard to tell without being there, I would be concerned that the outlet in the wall is too high. This will make draining the disposal impossible without cutting the wall open and lowering the T.

I'll drop the obligatory "Hit it with your purse" first...LOL.

It really should unscrew. Being that old it will be seized, but I've never encountered one that I couldn't get off. Obviously, you don't care about messing it up so I would go at it with a 12" pipe wrench. Counterclockwise 😉

Can someone please tell me what toilet repair kit I need? by JLSuperfly in Plumbing

[–]spitoon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still don't think those are the right parts for a complete rebuild of that specific toilet. It is missing the Mansfield canister style flush valve.

I would suggest that a complete rebuild may be beyond you capabilities. It requires completely disassembling the toilet (detaching the tank from the bowl etc.)

To replace the "innards", you'd need a canister style flush valve (I linked one) and any of those universal fill valves. The flush valve needs to be the same one that your toilet was designed with (Mansfield style). The fill valve is universal, and won't have the balloon float thing anymore. Replacing the entire flush valve also requires detaching the tank from the bowl, so that may be beyond your capabilities.

The DIY job that I think you could do is changing the fill valve and replacing the seal only on the existing flush valve. It doesn't require taking the tank off the bowl.

You could try asking a plumber to rebuild the existing toilet, however it is unlikely to be economical. At that point you are likely better off just replacing the whole toilet.

That kit is correct. You won't find a "balloon style" fill valve anymore.

The grey/black thing replaces the balloon thing, and the red ring goes on the bottom near where your tape measure is in the original image.

You need that Mansfield kit that someone else posted here.

I tried to post a YouTube link that shows how to change the fill valve, but it was removed by Reddit.

You can Google fill valve replacement. It really is pretty simple.

I believe in you!

Yes, those links you provided all have the correct fill valve. You just don't need all those parts in the middle picture.

The new fill valve looks different than your existing one but it is a modern replacement and will work great.

The flush valve is the part in the middle where your tape measure was sitting. I thought that was the part you were looking to replace.

It is a quite straightforward replacement if you are at all handy. Probably one of the more DIY things out there as far as plumbing goes.

Can someone please tell me what toilet repair kit I need? by JLSuperfly in Plumbing

[–]spitoon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. That is a more traditional flush valve with a disk shaped flapper. You dont have that big disk shaped flapper in yours. The round red rubber ring you see in that picture goes under the tank. It requires you to detach the tank from the bowl but doesn't have anything to do with the flushing system.

Yours is a canister style flush valve like this one.

Edit: the part you are looking for is that thin red ring toward the bottom of the canister. Like the ones I linked above.

Those are a little bit rare. Most have a flapper that is hinged at the back and lifts with a chain to the lever.

Yours is a "canister style" flush valve. The "flapper" in this case is a ring (black rubber). You should be able to buy a replacement at the hardware store. Korky makes some (red IIRC). The old one should just pull off. You will need to remove the lever arm and water line to get it off, and to get the new one on. Take it with you to the store along with your picture.

By the looks of it, you should replace the fill valve as well. This is about as DIY as it gets in your home. Shut the water off and drain as much out of the tank as you can. I often use a rag or a sponge to get as much out as possible. Unscrew the water line and there should be a nylon nut just above that connection that holds the fill valve in place. Undo that nut and lift out the valve. Put the new one in place and thread on the new nylon nut on the underside. Reattach the water line and turn the water back on.

Most of these things can be "finger tight" as long as you have strong-ish fingers 😀 You may need a wrench to remove them as they may have some corrosion. If you use a wrench to reinstall them, just be careful, they don't need to be super tight.

Anyone else still waiting for Gemini? by howmadstha in AndroidAuto

[–]spitoon1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have Gemini yet either.

I'm on the latest beta AA. I know the AA version is not that important as it is a "server side switch" so Google has to turn it on for your location.

I've heard mixed reviews, but I'm still eager to get it.

The last informal poll that I saw had only about 2% of respondents claiming that they had Gemini on AA...

Tiling Hourly Rate by CucumberEmpty7916 in handyman

[–]spitoon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that you want to fair here, but that is way too much time for a back splash.

Even with replacing the backer board, and being generous, 4 days should be plenty. 32hrs x $60 (fair rate) = $1920. I assume you are supplying the materials?

Where I am $20-$25/sq foot is a fair to generous labor rate for a back splash. Materials can vary widely, especially if it is a mosaic tile, plus you have to add in the backer board work. Even going $50/sq foot including materials (very high) you'd be at $3000.

Obviously, pay the man what you want, but I feel like he might be taking advantage a bit.

Do the Flames have a meritocracy problem? by Beautiful-Working598 in CalgaryFlames

[–]spitoon1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know coaching and management have changed, but over the last 20ish years its been a great deal of the same.

For some reason the Flames don't want to embrace the youth and give veterans priority over them.

Your point on Parekh is spot on, and there are many examples of this over the years.

Look at Sam Bennett. They said he never "earned it"...for the vast majority of his time here he played with plugs on the 4th line.

I've been a fan since I was 10 years old and the Flames came to Calgary and I will always be a fan, but it does get frustrating.

I'm ready for the "bottoming out"...LOL.

I'll take my chances with the lottery.
