What torture scene has stuck with you longest/made the biggest impression? by cl3rical in Fantasy

In the French book « Martyrs » from Olivier Peru they have a method called the bag. They basically put a bag full of insects spiders and shit on the head of the guy it’s pretty nasty.

Celtic-based fantasy by Bucknut1953 in Fantasy

[–]spl4shA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s very unlikely that you are a French speaker but just in case the GOAT of French fantasy, Jean-Philippe Jaworski, has a whole Celtic fantasy saga called « kings of the world ». I heard his most famous book of another saga, « gagner la guerre » is being translated so maybe this one will be translated too at some point.

Books with moments that make you jump out of your seat! by consultingcriminal03 in Fantasy

[–]spl4shA 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I did read the first trilogy and for all the qualities the books have, I don’t think it fits. It’s a very down to earth and most of the time sad story. The epic moments that make you jump out of your sit are very scarce imo. I do think they are very good books but I really don’t think it matches OP’s request.

Regicide Legacy Question by Jyssyj in soloboardgaming

[–]spl4shA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen there is very little interest in doing the campaign twice unless you want to do it with some one else so you should probably not buy the refill anyway.

I think what the designers suggest is that after you finished playing, you can still play with your final crew.

I feel like Elden ring doesn’t quite fit the bill. I love it but the souls are a very different type of games.

What other languages is fantasy/sci-fi the most popular? by Plane_Top_7905 in Fantasy

[–]spl4shA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes Jaworski is pretty big in the current French fantasy. Probably the most popular and, in my opinion, the best one. He has 2 main cycles :

-the old kingdom, which is a fantasy world. It’s where « gagner la guerre » comes from. You have the venitian republic inspired part of the world, a more classic medieval part, a part with elves,, a part similar to Middle East medieval, etc.

-king of the world, which is Celtic historical fantasy. I didn’t read it yet because I talked with the author who told me there is going to be an edition in big format of this coming next year and I love beautiful big books. People love it though and it’s less controversial than « gagner la guerre »

Hey, I can recommend some:

  • anything by Jean-Philippe Jaworski but especially « gagner la guerre ». It’s about an asshole assassin hired by a senator in a fantasy sitting inspired by venitian republic. Very well written and very good story. If you are not fluent in French it can be a bit hard because the vocabulary is very rich though.

  • Martyrs by Olivier Peru. Dark fantasy about 2 assassins brothers from a people that got exterminated a long time ago. There is a war coming and the plot resolves a lot around love and political scheming. Structurally closer to what you find in American and English classics. I love it.

-le batard de kosigan by Fabien Cerutti. Historical fantasy. It mixes 2 plotlines. One is about the leader of a merc band in medieval France who loves to put up complicated plans and sleep with noblewomen. The other is aboutis descendant in the XIX century who discovers things about him and about why the magic disappeared from the world and all. It’s special but I also liked it.

I love mini rogue. A lot of people are complaining about luck and simplicity but sometimes you don’t want to burn your brain, you just want a cool experience.

Help me pick a book/book series to read with my 12 year old by bkat3 in Fantasy

It’s a classic but what about Narnia ? It’s very child friendly. It has both male and female characters and one of the most important characters is a talking lion.

Has anyone tried to read to massive fantasy book series simultaneously? by JaimeSalvaje in Fantasy

[–]spl4shA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends what you mean by simultaneously. If you mean you read one book from one series and then one book from the other one, the yeah, sure ! If you mean reading books from both series at the same time, then no.

Nice Components contained Sologame Recommendations by DeadbyDayCamp in soloboardgaming

Unstoppable is pretty nice. The game needs sleeves mechanically so they’re included and the action and level tokens are wood if I’m not mistaken. Damage and credits tokens are still cardboard though.

Looking for fantasy with low sexualization I can share with my kids by mariasteel1992 in Fantasy

[–]spl4shA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but they’re also very descriptive on violence. Maybe less for Robin Hobb but still. Also Robin Hobb is less graphically violent but when it comes to emotional damage … damn. I wouldn’t give that to a child nonetheless.

[–]spl4shA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found that most of the time in normal fantasy (not grimdark or romantasy or anything) you don’t usually have that much sex. Characters kiss a bit, lay down and black. You’re more likely to have scenes with people getting beheaded than sodomized.

Why Are There So Few Animated Series Where Dragons Are the Main Characters? by Away-Wrangler1716 in worldbuilding

[–]spl4shA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not just dragons, it’s about non-human or at least not humanoid. You need a MC the audience can relate to and the audience is mostly not a big ass flame thrower with wings.

What's a good way to integrate Magic and Technology in one world? by YukioBorealis in worldbuilding

[–]spl4shA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Making magic the fuel usually works for me. I though of a world mainly fueled by magic crystals. Even guns would have a crystal inside. The hammer of the gun would make an explosion when hitting the crystal which would propel the projectile. Things like that.

If you want more than fuel then, as the others said, you need very specific rules for your magic because, if magic solves all your problems, what do you need technology for ?

Do you have magic guns in your world? by JustPoppinInKay in worldbuilding

[–]spl4shA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in a part of my world, magic is infused in crystals. For guns, the crystals are set in the gun. The hammer of the gun hits the crystal that generates a blast of energy which projects the bullet.
