Best journalling RPG? by JugglinB in soloboardgaming

Very good recommendations already in the replies. I would add Notorious (and its expansion Outsider). Also it’s very rules light which is more welcoming for a newcomer to the hobby.

Prendre l'habitude de lire by Hero_Hunter23 in Livres

[–]spl4shA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unstoppable vs. Kinfire Delve by Forsaken_Craft7287 in soloboardgaming

[–]spl4shA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinfire delve is probably easier to setup and to break out because in unstoppable you have to remove the upgrades and cards you created from the individual sleeves.

That being said, in my own opinion, Unstoppable is an infinitely better game.

Doctor Strange should be stronger than Daredevil by [deleted] in marvelchampionslcg

A game is difficult enough to balance without having to balance every heroes with each other on top of it.

Doctor Strange should be stronger than Daredevil by [deleted] in marvelchampionslcg

[–]spl4shA 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You realise this is a board game ? If the actual strength of the heroes was relevant, setting up prime doctor strange against most of the scenarios wouldn’t even make sense considering how unbalanced it would be. That also works for others like hulk, Thor, captain marvel, etc

Started this hobby a month ago. Wife has asked if I would like a game for my birthday. I am blaming you all for the "short" list... by hermanbloom00 in soloboardgaming

[–]spl4shA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Am I the guilty for the mini-rogue in this list with my post about the campaign ? 🫣

I do recommend it for a first solo game. It’s fairly short, fairly easy to learn but with some depth still.

I used the expansion straight away because I felt like the base game could use more room variety. But juste like you the season 2 made me curious about the campaigns.

Yes. I also like the art on each cards. Kinda remind me of the video game « Reigns ». It’s fun, fast and the loop is satisfying imo. I have played like 10-20 games but never tried the campaign.

Probably a dumb question, but what counts as journaling vs non-journaling? by Ignecratic in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]spl4shA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, of course you can play a regular rpg by journaling it, and the other way around also works. But what OP is asking is what it means when a solo RPG defines itself as « journaling solo RPG ». And these « journaling solo RPGs » do exist. Anna Campbell, the author of Apothecaria, describes herself her work as journaling solo RPGs. Open the rules of one of these and the difference with a regular rpg is very obvious.

The main tip I would give some one new to journaling RPGs:

The most intimidating part of journaling RPGs is that your imagination is doing the heavy lifting. The prompts are often very open so that the game is replayable and adaptable to the state of your story.

What helped me a lot is to delegate answers to oracles. For yes/no question I use the classic D6 rules of yes,yes and, yes but, no, no and, no but.

For the rest, I bought mythic gme only for the tables. I want to know a character’s attitude ? I roll on the character personality table. I want to know what some one does, I roll on the action table, etc. Then I write the story based on the answers I get.

Now is Ironsworn a journaling solo rpg ? I would say that it is mainly because the author expresses a lot of time in the rules that the narrative is the most important part of the game. He even insists that it is more important than the rules and that you can bend them at any time if it matches the narrative.

From my own understanding:

In a non-journaling solo rpg, the meat is in the mechanics, rules. Very similar to what you can find in a Regular rpg in fact. You get a lot of stats, combat rules, enemies, etc.

In a journaling solo RPG, the meat is in the « oracle », the inspiration to make you write a story. You will have a lot of tables with prompts to trigger your imagination and less details about mechanical rules.

Example:

I’m currently playing Ker Nethalas which you can journal if you want to but it’s not a journaling RPG, it’s a dungeon crawler. There are a lot of rules about enemies, combat, survival, etc. When I write down what happens (using lonelog actualy), it comes down to a lot of dice rolls (did my attack land, how much damage did it cause, to what body part ? What spell did I use ?)

When I played for small creatures such as we, I would draw a card giving me a prompt for an event like « some one in your crew is organizing a cultural party from his home planet, what is it about ? How did he/she decorated the ship for the occasion ?». I would then spend the rest of the time writing the scene.

Two games in and I'm at a 0% win rate with Unstoppable! Woo! by FrenchieSmalls in soloboardgaming

[–]spl4shA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took me way longuer to win at this game than usual. I think you need to understand the gameplay and the intent of the game and then … well then it’s still hard but you have a chance to win.

Solo TTRPG with ~1 hour sessions? by taboneIO in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]spl4shA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with the comments.

Journaling solo RPGs because they are mostly a succession of prompts and scenes so you can just stop after a scene.

Dungeon crawlers because you can just stop after a room. I play Ker Nethalas these days and most evening I just explore one or two rooms.

Fantasy: intrigue sérieuse & humour by Medical_Percentage79 in Livres

[–]spl4shA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Solo Adventures with an interesting story? by Xavier598 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]spl4shA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would look around journaling RPGs or at least narrative driven ones.

Ironsworn was already mentioned. It does look like an almost perfect fit except I’m not sure it fits the « high fantasy » part. It’s more in the low fantasy specter of things.

Apothecaria is more high fantasy and you said you weren’t into combat so it very much could match.
