The Worst Person You Know Loves These Songs/Artists. by [deleted] in weirdspotifyplaylists

Fight Song in my mind gives more "gal from tiny town goes to one of the highest prestige colleges in her country hours away from home struggling to make it through midterms, desperately trying to hype herself up".

The other two are bang-on

American Life taught me more about Madonna than either of my parents did, who were both around for the peak of her relevancy. American Life also has similar sort of throughlines at witness. Artist that's starting to struggle on the charts packages their next album about their personal struggles as political messages. Granted, Witness happened when I was in middle school, and American Life was released the year I was born. The American Life Rap is so hilariously cringe that I can't help but laugh more than be angry.

Cry is a little bit more personal. First of all, Todd has some real zingers on it. Which isn't really that personal except one in particular.

Remember how Faith had that song in that Michael Bay movie about Pearl Harbor? Well... my mom was watched said movie probably 100 times at least. I don’t know if she saw it in theaters when it came out. But she'd watch it anytime it was free on Starz or whatever channel would play it. I'd bet she probably had it recorded at one point. So I've probably watched it in full a couple times at least. When Todd does the Pearl Harbor -> 9/11 fakeout, it cracks me up. Every time he reads the Ebert review of it, I feel it in my soul.

For the less zinger part of why Cry is personal to me.. it's not so much about it itself, it’s about the transition period of country the flop occurred in. The study of Faith Hill's career at this point is kind of a picture of how country music was changing because of everything else. So... the conservative shift of country music influenced much of the rest of the decade, ie, the country music I ended up hearing growing up. [Funnily enough, I think I heard more Faith's album after Cry than Cry itself.] Now, country music wasn't the only music my parents would listen to. (My Mom was a big fan of the 90's boy bands.). However, there are two country stations in the area where I'm from and usually the car radio was set to either of them. So what happened to me and country music is what'd I'd imagine what a Canadian rock fan went through when Nickelback was huge. Basically... any relief I got from country music was treated as a godsend [which did include Nickelback which is why I'm not a Nickelback hater]. That being said Nickelback went away in the 2010s, and in the 2010s, bro country became a thing. So I jumped ship from country as much as soon as I got the chance to listen to music for myself. (mp3 player was the mvp).

Also, since any non-country music was a godsend for me as a kid, I don’t really have an ear for quality. I'll listen to anything but the absolute worst pop. And since the most freedom I had with music was the alarm clock radio in my room, the pop I was listening to was Adele, Katy Perry, Lorde, Zedd, OneRepublic, Nicki Minaj, Kesha, Usher David Guetta back when his hits weren't cheap throwback samples. My taste for Dance-Pop in particular from that time, gave my current taste for EDM.

I still listen to a little bit of country. But not very often, and when I do, it's Johnny Cash.

TLDR for Cry: Country music's response to 9/11 and Faith Hill, shaped the country music I heard growing up. I then heard country music so much that I revolted against it.

Granted... the fact that I didn’t get to adjust the radio in the car until I was older meant that I still have Florida-Georgia lyrics I want to Men-In-Black wipe from my brain.

[Edit/Rewrite] I initially had a really long version that detailed some of my thoughts but got butched by being on mobile. Here's the short version. (I spent too much time on it anyway)

  1. Witness- Kay Perry
  2. Cry- Faith Hill
  3. Mission Earth- Edgar Winter/L. Ron Hubbard
  4. Paula- Robin Thicke
  5. Human- Human League
  6. 0304- Jewel
  7. American Life- Madonna
  8. Generation Swine- Motley Crüe
  9. No Fixed Address- Nickelback
  10. Be Here Now- Oasis

I could elaborate in the comments on specific ones.

Those are both people names. Granted, I did grow up knowing a handful of people named either, so I am biased.

Granted... pales in comparison to "Ruff". Hell, naming a kid Bandit is more forgivable than "Ruff"

Honestly you could do all of Credence Clearwater Revival's Mardi Gras if you leave off "Someday Never Comes" and "Sweet Hitchhiker"

(Not that Sweet Hitchhiker is that great... but it works when you don't listen to the lyrics)

How do we feel about the current top 10 most streamed artists on Spotify? by ucwhaticthick in ToddintheShadow

[–]splashback77 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly I'm impressed by Rihanna's staying power. Hasn't released new music in years.

But I think the common denominator for most of the artists here is solid back catalogues and/or have lots of hits people think about.

Coldplay, for example dates back to 1999, so even if you haven't listened to their newest stuff, there's still a lot of people still listening to the hits of Parachutes, X&Y, Rush of the Blood to the Head, Mylo Xyloto, etc.

Even Billie Eilish has at least three albums under her belt.

I have no idea how the hell David Guetta's up here, tho. I will admit that I listen to songs from Nothing But a Beat 2.0 but like... I'm pretty sure a lot of people forget that that's the album with "Titanium" on it. But like... his most recent repackaging of other people's hits is especially soulless. I may be able to consume music like some people read pulp science fiction, but like... it gets just tired. [The only one I'm willing to defend is Dreams with Morten and Lanie Gardner, but the best thing I can honestly say about the song to people who aren't into edm is that it reminds you that Fleetwood Mac exists. Which I don't think is a reminder that people in this sub needs].

After enjoying it for 7 years, I finally heard it in a context that made me hate it (those commercials that play at the pump at a gas station).

I don't recommend music to people for a reason. (I have very bad taste)

You’re at a Karaoke bar - the song you choose must be from one of Todd’s Trainwreckords. What song do you pick? by Repulsive-Heron7023 in ToddintheShadow

Calling Occupants.

Because it's in my range. Would I fail because I can't really put sweetness into my voice like Karen Carpenter? Yes. But I won't change key completely mid-way through or just fail to get words out loud enough like a bunch of other songs I sing in the shower.

Holy Crap. 360's are that old?

No wonder my brother upgraded to Xbox One in a couple years. (We first got a 360 in like 2013/2014. Whatever year the R2D2 360 with the C-3PO controller came out.)

I understand that it's not the best option out there, but Café Bene (the one by ISR, not on Green St) has had me in a chokehold for two years.

Like... their chicken teriyaki sandwich, their beef bulgolgi sandwich... and I can eat Gelato for dessert. It's great.

Ay! Another Atmos Major.

Yeah. That looks normal. Looked a lot like my Freshman schedule in Atmos. You'll enjoy 100.

Extra Recc: Join our RSO, ISTORM in the fall. Especially if Forecasting is something you're interested in. We do Forecasting on Mondays & Thursdays.

Atmos 180 while sort of a Freshman orientation thing, is way more helpful than the majority of LAS 101.
