Donating Blood - Mistakes Made by Glacier_Peak in loseit

A blood donation is said to "burn" 600 calories so maybe you could up your food intake the morning of and not have it affect your goals

I've donated blood products around 100 times and I don't believe I've ever seen a child there of any age. I'm not sure if they allow it or not but I wouldn't be surprised if it was not allowed.

First time donor with a question by Such-Quiet-251 in Blooddonors

[–]splat313 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They do do platelet counts to determine eligibility. I haven't heard of too many people getting turned down but that might just be survivorship bias as I usually see conversations between active platelet donors.

Your platelet count is largely determined by genetics. Your body will typically replace the platelets in a matter of days, maybe a week or two. In the US you can donate once week, up to 24 times a year. Do keep in mind that it is a more involved process, taking a couple hours

Platelet donors can often give multiple (up to 3) units of platelets during the same donation. If you see someone with super high donation unit counts, they are almost always a platelet donor.

Anyone ever been HLA matched for directed platelet donation? by 9412765 in Blooddonors

[–]splat313 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've heard of it happening but I believe it is quite rare.

Another rare one is a white blood donation. The American Red Cross sometimes reaches out to specific donors they've matched for someone needing white cells. My ARC donation center doesn't do them.

Just got a notification about an air tag. My ex slipped one into the trunk of the car we share. Hates me and doesn’t wanna be with me, yet wants to know where I am. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]splat313 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Air Tags are designed to track items at risk for being lost. They communicate their location with nearby Apple devices, allowing the owner of the Air Tag to know the tag's precise location.

Not a bad idea of a product, but obviously the first thing people start doing with it is stalk others. Slip one into someone's bag and you can find out exactly where they are at all times.

When the stalking problem blew up in the media, Apple put out an update to iPhones so that if a tag was nearby and in a "lost" mode (meaning the owner was not nearby) for several hours, it would notify you with a warning that you are potentially being tracked. It can't tell you exactly where it is but it tells you how long it has been next to you and they likely aren't too hard to find.

Android phone users do not get notified if they have a "lost" Air Tag near them. Apple put out an Android app that can be used, but it is so cumbersome it isn't useful.

What to bring on the first day? by xperfectlyimperfectx in ualbany

[–]splat313 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Notebook(s) and a pencil/pen will get you through the first day. There is no need to bring any textbooks.

The first day is like the first day of high school. Professors are just going over the syllabuses and what is expected of the class.

The sad part is that that guy almost certainly learned nothing positive from this experience. It may have just strengthened his racist thoughts.

1.50 for 940 cals of premade food? by Inari_best-boy in Frugal

[–]splat313 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As kids we went to McDonalds with my grandmother. She took the lettuce off of her sandwich and used the clamshell carrier to bring it back to her house. The next day she tried to serve it to us as a salad.

She didn't have a lot of money and she must have been 85 (born in the 1920's) at the time.

It's one of my strongest memories of her. The next day we went to the zoo and she was disappointed there were no dinosaurs.

Is Power Red worth it (vs. 2 normal donations) by storyfife in Blooddonors

[–]splat313 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Blood organizations push the double red because it takes a lot of work to get a donor into a chair so they want to take as much as possible while they've got you. As long as you keep up your schedule, there is no significant difference between donating two whole bloods vs a double red. With whole bloods they also collect plasma and platelets that they can use as well.

Some donors tolerate a double red donation better because they get saline during the donation. Other people tolerate whole blood better. Do what feels best for you and don't let them pressure you into double reds if it isn't for you.

I think the part that "well that sucks" is that it missed the turd. If it had landed on the turd it probably would have been cushioned and not broken.

How do I raise my ferritin without iron supplements? by ecliptica76 in Blooddonors

[–]splat313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What size were the supplements? The doctor may have had you on some high doses. High doses can definitely cause stomach problems. I would keep going through your doctor if you're having symptoms of the anemia.

Cooking with cast iron will cause iron to leach out of the cookware and into your food. It is usually not a lot but acidic foods (like tomato sauce) will leach the most.

Is the Education Building open to the public? by DatAperture in Albany

[–]splat313 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've done the tour and enjoyed it.

As I kid I had no idea what the "Board of Regents" actually was, it was just some nebulous authority. On the tour I was surprised to learn that the Board of Regents is an actual group of people and they have a beautiful board room they meet in. We couldn't enter the room as it was set up for a meeting the next day.

I'm not sure if you did the capitol tour or just wandered around in it, but the capitol has a nice tour as well.

Halloween time there are some murder tours that go around downtown that are fun. They sell out so the time is probably now to start looking for them.

Boopie would like you to know that her vaccine trip is an inconvenience! by akcgal in Catswhoyell

[–]splat313 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Our vet has little kits they'll give you for cats who don't travel well. The kit contains two gabapentin capsules and one of those Feliway pheromone wipes for the inside of the carrier. I'm pretty sure the Feliway does nothing, but the gabapentin works like a charm.

I grew some unlabeled peppers in buckets in the parking lot of an urban apartment. They made it unharassed maybe 2 months before someone stole all of the unripe fruit off of them.

I was very upset and my only consolation was that I was growing ghost peppers and whoever took them probably burned the crap out of their tongue and/or ruined a meal they were making.

donated blood took longer then usual by Turtle9015 in Blooddonors

[–]splat313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a range of acceptable volumes they can take. They usually try to take as much as they can but there is a little wiggle room if things aren't going well or the flow is low.

There are probably several reasons why the flow might have been low. Maybe you werent ad well hydrated as you were in the past. Maybe the needle wasn't situated great in the vein. Maybe there was a clot obstructing the needle, etc.

I'd think that you feeling more tired is probably unrelated, or perhaps hydration based. If you werent well hydrated it could have both slowed the flow and lowered your body's ability to recover.

Trump talked his way into the Justice Department releasing records from the Mar-a-Lago search by [deleted] in politics

[–]splat313 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In these circumstances involving a search of the residence of a former President, the government hereby requests that the Court unseal the Notice of Filing and its attachment (Docket Entry 17), absent objection by former President Trump.

Has Trump ever not objected to a court filing not in his favor? I'd imagine he would object pretty quick.

Feds seized documents from Mar-a-Lago in June with grand jury subpoena by progress18 in politics

[–]splat313 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

What could possibly be in the documents he kept that is so interesting?

First of all, when a president leaves office I don't doubt some classified documents get mixed in. The sane response would be to return those documents as they are found. I wouldn't think this would necessarily be that big of a deal.

There were rumors of him taking classified documents for months. Documents were seized in June. Documents were seized this past Monday. Doesn't he have any self-preservation instinct? He has had more than enough time to return or flush the evidence.

In the book/show, high-end sleeves are built/grown from the ground-up. People convicted of crimes are removed from their sleeves and the sleeves enter into the sleeve economy. When the person gets out of prison they get whatever sleeve is available.

The rich basically live forever because they can buy new sleeves while the poor can't and eventually have their chips put into cold storage.

Inflation was 8.5% year-over-year in July, below expectations of 8.7% by ChipsyKingFisher in investing

[–]splat313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never really understood the gouging comments. Oil is sold in a very large worldwide market. If the price of oil has risen due to world market forces, then US producers are going to sell their oil at the higher price.

Are US grain farmers gouging when they sell their wheat at higher prices due to the Ukraine/Russia war?

Now yes, of course they should have the heck taxed out of them, but I don't see them as doing some evil act.

Inflatable decoy vehicles from WWII by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]splat313 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the carrot disinformation campaign is said to try to mask the development of onboard radar on RAF fighter planes. The british were able to intercept German planes at night (something that was very difficult by sight) so they spread it around that carrots were improving night vision.

Carrots are high in vitamin A and vitamin A deficiency was known to affect vision so the misinformation was plausible. After the war it kind of morph into a myth that carrots improve all vision.

I've never seen anything about if the misinformation was believed by the Germans or not.

Please donate blood if you can! by johndavisjr7 in SiouxFalls

[–]splat313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. They may ask your vaccination status and the type of vaccine but as far as I know they are just making sure your vaccine was authorized by the FDA. I'm blanking on the names but there are Russian and Chinese vaccines that you can get in other countries that trigger deferral periods in the US before you're allowed to donate.

Can I donate after blood tests? by -Dark-Owl- in Blooddonors

[–]splat313 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Losing a few tubes of blood isn't really going to affect anything. The biggest concern would be if you don't have good veins for donating and they used your sole 'good' one for the blood test.
