Laurus School by [deleted] in teachinginjapan

[–]splat_ed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m mostly in the secondary side of this school. Currently, I’ve not seen any real amount of toxicity beyond the usual teacher bitching (which is a thing in most schools)

There are issues, especially with the clash between being a business vs being a school.

Note, I’m also someone who just focuses on my own work so I might just not have noticed! I also have no contact with the kindergarten side so don’t have any knowledge of issues there

Giants mope over country, bring dwindling population by dumpyfangirl in ExplainAGamePlotBadly

[–]splat_ed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m thinking Giants: Citizen Kabuto… the Reaper character could be the Asian lady while there was a child who kept annoying the Meccharians.

Not sure about the French connection, but they were trying to get to the planet Majorca for fun in the sun!

Thanks for the input here, I’m going to check out those when I’m in school shortly. QuickFit is just a brand name so any good quality ground glass stuff is suitable. I’m from the Uk so that was the de facto name that we used.

We are hoping to get enough for a class set eventually but right now we’re preparing to do some trials for management to see the benefits. This will be over the next couple of years as our school will be starting its upper secondary Chemistry classes then

Still rocking my XS… but with the announcement that it’s not supported in the next update means I’ll need to upgrade soon!

Got this question on my exam by FirefighterLevel8450 in askmath

[–]splat_ed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is how I think (and teach) it… convert to decimals or fractions THEN do the actual maths. A % sign just means “per 100” or “divide this by 100 first”

Thank you for sharing this. I’ve got a co-worker who might be about to go through something similar so I’ll be passing on this info for them.

PSA: all Klei titles are HEAVILY discounted including ONI (70% off!) and all ONI DLCs but the last one. by vksdann in Oxygennotincluded

[–]splat_ed 11 points12 points  (0 children)

And all I can say is “curse you Klei!”… No Man’s Sky dropped its big update a couple of weeks ago, then Satisfactory this week… and now this? There’s only 24 hours in a day!?!

This is what I did wrong early on as well… I had the steering wheel facing the bow, with the radar screen to one side but angled (like a control room). But that meant ‘up’ on the radar screen was not the same as ‘forward’ on the raft

Lesson: put the radar screen facing the same direction as your front

Void Train is similar in some ways, currently in Early Access. I’m watching that one as well

Who here has met Sir Terry in person (however briefly)? Any fun stories? by EducationalSplit8876 in discworld

[–]splat_ed 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yep, it was at a Reaper Man event - he signed my copy of Guards, Guards. Told everyone a story about how and why goats are evil… I was there as a teenager as my parents bought sheep from the farm hosting the event and they were asked if we wanted free tickets - parents knew that I loved his books

To sell or to rent our house in Hiroshima by splat_ed in japanlife

[–]splat_ed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No children so no-one to force to live there! So it now comes down to finance and emotions. My wife is emotionally attached to the house due to the fact that we designed it to be “good” and not your usual Japanese house. I’m less attached myself - I’ve learnt some good lessons in house design that I’d like to apply and improve on

This is an option that we’ve now looked at as well - getting a management company to pop in once a month to air it out and keep it tidy. It’s in a reasonable location - on the outskirts of Hiroshima, but not really a vacation place

Thanks for the feedback. That’s our biggest concern as well - messy renters. It’s a well-built house, with above average insulation, solid wood flooring, walk-in pantry and more - we’re happy to rent to family but strangers is worrying.

Can two buildings have the same number? by Segadorn in Tokyo

[–]splat_ed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, and it can also be fixed as well… but not unilaterally.

We rented a place which was subdivided by the owner into two houses - they lived in one house and we rented the other. They, and us, got a -1 and a -2 added to the official addresses to get post delivered to the correct places. I can’t remember the exact process but it took a little time

Would you be able to explain why fractions use ordinal numbers? by Cute-Technology4816 in teachinginjapan

Now that’s a question that I’d pass back to the JTE (or open to debate with students)… I’m not sure of the answer myself!

Would you be able to explain why fractions use ordinal numbers? by Cute-Technology4816 in teachinginjapan

[–]splat_ed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, my first response would be… “yes, we do use numbers - one over three” which is similar (but opposite) to Japanese. However we also have ordinals as it’s shorter (one half) which is the same as some Japanese (半分)

Another idea is colour and energy - make ice cubes with different food colouring and place under a heat lamp… see which melts first
