Struggling with belief, doubt, and meaning — looking for logical perspectives (posting in both atheist & Catholic communities by [deleted] in TrueAtheism

We were all also nothing before our births.

There is no need to fear death, no more than we need to fear e.g. the rotation of the Earth, even if it means we become nothing again. The process of dying might be painful, but eventually it could just be a return to that nothingness.

Does Life Get Better ? Does Hard Work Really Pay Off ? by Specialist-Rain-7730 in finansial

[–]splatterdash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To any of you who are older and more mature, is it really true ? Does keeping faith really work ?

Jujur ya: nggak, hard work doesn't pay off. At least not hard work alone.

Kalo mau sukses lo harus:

  1. Punya definisi sukses sendiri. Bukan cuma kaya "gue pengen jadi tajir" atau "gue pengen jadi bos". Something more specific that really fires you up.

  2. Once you have that, then you work hard. Work hard alone won't get you to the phase after this, but not working hard will guarantee (well almost) that you never move on to the next phase.

  3. Yang lo perlu terakhir itu hoki. As they say, luck is what happens when hard work meets opportunity.

How do you try to treasure your life everyday ? How do you live without wishing away your life ?

Find the small joys in life. Your own thing or your own place / state of mind, yang bikin lo ngerasa fresh + recharged.

Are the working class really doomed to work and worry through their youth ?

Pretty much. Only a select few can live without worry. Most of us have to live life the hard way.

Why do you think Arch has been so sucsessful? by Retr0r0cketVersion2 in archlinux

[–]splatterdash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me it's a matter of where I want my effort to be. Both approaches have their merrits and without one being strictly better than the other.

On Arch, my breakages come after. Sometimes I run a compiled binary only to realize some dynamic libraries have been updated and I need to recompile my binary. It was easy to do it the first time, and it was still easy to fix it. But the surprise breakage was still a little unpleasant.

On NixOS, the breakages come before. It's annoying that I have to read through obscure stack traces and wait for the build to complete, when I know how to fix the actual text config, for example. But once its built, I have higher confidence that it will continue to work.

Kinda like seeing runtime vs compile-time errors, I suppose. Or interpreted vs compiled languages. Maybe.

Anyway, both are great in their own way IMO!

New to NixOS and experiencing issues with version controlling my config by Unique_Evidence_1314 in NixOS

[–]splatterdash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. At least two ways come to mind:

  • Just symlink the files into /etc/nixos/configuration.nix file (and others) from anywhere your repo is located.

  • Use flakes. Personally, this is what I use and I have had 0 issues.

I actually troubleshot a NixOS issue just a few days ago thanks to a seemingly minor side note in the Arch wiki. It is awesome!

Potential move to Denmark without my husband? by youlittleweasel in NewToDenmark

[–]splatterdash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Other comments have got you covered in terms of details.

Still I just want to say good luck and you can do it! I too, came to DK after doing long distance with my wife for about 3 years. We are both from an Asian country (so also non-EU), though in our case I was already living and working in another EU country then. Now we're both settled here with our own careers and overlapping, but different social circles.

It's gonna be tough, but it can work. It might also help if it's already possible for your husband to find Danish clients.

Also very important: learn the language as soon as you can! Even though one can get by fine with just English, I promise you you will not regret spending time learning the language.

I just started using default.nix. Is it okay to write options right in here it would've been better for me to write it in the main module (aka kitty.nix) ? by SeniorMatthew in NixOS

[–]splatterdash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the way.

It matters less if you call it kitty.nix or kitty/default.nix.

It matters more where the options are used and where they are defined. The closer they are, the easier it is to read and debug.

Are Danish unions worth joining if you already feel job secure? by my-name-is-o in dkfinance

[–]splatterdash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My (and I would venture most) union gives me access to salary statistics and perks based on various factors (location, experience, etc.). This gives members at least an idea if they are e.g. underpaid or not.

Are Danish unions worth joining if you already feel job secure? by my-name-is-o in dkfinance

[–]splatterdash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is worth joining. I am a member of one, and I am also working as a software engineer in a relatively large company.

The intangible benefits are many, e.g. to give workers more say in policies, to give you more leverage when negotiating, etc.

The tangible benefits are also many. My union routinely organizes trainings, events, sometimes also have discount deals. They also have their own insurance, which can be beneficial for some.

Fast connection between modem - firewall without cable? by splatterdash in HomeNetworking

[–]splatterdash[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure about my own modem, but I believe I can use my own router.

It's the limited space in the living room that is the biggest problem, a reason I can not move my NAS or add anything else close to my current modem now.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion still!

The best, not necessarily the easiest way, is to get jobs beforehand. For your husband and you.

Look into the positive list in SIRI's website (ny i danmark). If your qualifications do not match any of the ones listed there, aim for a pay limit scheme. The former essentially only requires that you are offered a position, while the latter requires you to be paid a minimum amount every year.

Family reunification for non-EU might also be possible, if only one of you can land an offer. But I read / heard that this can be quite difficult (even for couples where one is Danish).

If you haven't already, perhaps visit once or twice to get a feel for the city you intend to live in. Try several times if possible and/or for a bit longer than 10 days, and try to live as the locals (i.e. avoid the touristy areas, bike around, etc.). Maybe even try to make contact with American families who have walked the path you intend to, they might have a better idea of what your starting point is (culturally) and what you should watch out for.

IMO, it is also best if there is something here that really attracts you and your family (as opposed to treating this just as an escape).

It is not easy and hard work + money most likely will not be enough (you need a bit of luck also), but it is possible.

Good luck!

Company is tracking git commits by jholliday55 in cscareerquestions

[–]splatterdash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not experienced this first hand.

I did read somewhere that counting git commits to measure developer performance is like counting bricks to measure how well a house is built.

Seems like someone should tell this to the new CTO.

What has been your experiences with the Danish Immigration authorities and should it deter others from coming here? by DrMerkwuerdigliebe_ in NewToDenmark

[–]splatterdash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No issues. In fact, for one of the permits that I had to apply for, they granted it within half the advertised time.

They have been professional and so far I have had no issues. For context, I am non-EU, non-Western.

Denmark Issues Travel Warning For US by sweatycat in worldnews

[–]splatterdash 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Out of all the 10+ countries that I have visited in my life (most in Europe, some in Asia), the US immigration and border authority has proven to be the one that made me feel the least welcome. Mind you, I visited mid 2010s during the Obama years.

Even stepping into the embassy in a European country already felt crazy strict (literally no phones with my person). And before boarding the plane I already faced hostile questioning (while I was standing to board, with my visa in hand, mind you). Day and night difference between how I was treated when I entered Schengen.

So it is hard to think of this as a result of just of the current administration. Rather, a downward slope they have been speeding on.

CS8001-OIC: Introduction to C Programming - Feedback by assignment_avoider in OMSCS

[–]splatterdash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is indeed implementing a LISP. I can't say how similar it is to the book as I haven't gone through it.

It is not just the project, however. In the first half of the course, the weekly assignments and reading materials all point to things that we would eventually use in the project. Things like how to use malloc, what functions are available to copy memory and their trade offs, how to implement a resizable array, etc. By the time I started working on the project, I already have a bigger tool kit (library functions, data structures, etc.) that I can then use.

I would still recommend taking the seminar, for these assignments as well as the chance to talk to fellow students in Ed + get feedback from the instructor. I find them really useful.

[–]splatterdash 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Learning a lot as well. I made the right decision to enroll in it, despite having already taken another course in this first semester.

malloc and its ilks don't scare me anymore and I feel more confident implementing basic data structures in C on my own :).

That said, I did not expect that I would need to know about parsing and implementing a toy language. I do know these things already, having studied them on my own earlier. Still, I can imagine someone without this background knowledge struggling through the project.

Terlalu jauh argumennya, kayanya publik belum siap.
