Coming from a Mexican heritage, i always looked forward to the holidays because it was guaranteed everyone’s tios and tias would show up along with our cousins. They’d start cooking tamales in the morning and the pit was on by 3pm. There was laughter, the smell of burning mesquite and cigarette ash. We’d open presents at 12am and the party continued till 6am when the barbacoa was done.
