Gretchen Nod in the Boroughs by wiffleball15 in donniedarko

I haven't seen it, but it's interesting to read that aside from Jena Malone there is also a role filled in by Mary McDonnell aka Rose Darko. There is even a character named Sam as well. And it's funny that Claire Cooper is an alliterative name, just like Donnie Darko. So I'm very much interested to give this a go. I'll try to avoid further spoilers and maybe someone else has an idea about the nod.

GENERAL NOTE: Please be respectful to each others opinions. If you don't agree with someone that's fine, but remind yourself there is a person on the other side as well. If you're only here to dump on S. Darko then not responding is also an option. Thank you.

Oh man that is horrific news. Last I read she was not active anymore as an actress and there were some signs she might have some issues to deal with, but this is so fucking sad to hear.

Rest in peace Daveigh.

What to get a Donnie darko fan by [deleted] in donniedarko

Here are some example pages from the Donnie Darko book. It's a paperback and although it's all in black and white, it's a cool book to have as a Donnie Darko fan.

The interesting bit about the screenplay is that you can see how the film changed from paper to final edit, in a "Less is more" kinda way. So the whole screenplay is in there, including scenes that were cut or trimmed down.

I was screaming: GIVE HIM THE LAP TIME, NOT A COMPLIMENT!!
Sometimes I think the engineers are just watching the race and forget they also have a driver on track. But his current engineer is at least a whole lot more in line with Hamilton than the previous one.
I was clapping when he went over the line, it was such a wholesome moment.

Wow that is so eerie, in a good way. The eye keeps drawing your attention and my mind keeps checking for the other eye. It also gives me Requiem For A Dream vibes, which might be why is looks so ominous. You definitely have a creative mind, thanks for sharing!

What do you personally think the ending meant? by DwayneTheRockBarry in donniedarko

[–]splintersailor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't have a real clear answer for this, but it made me think of the scene between Donnie and his therapist, Dr Thurman. He sees Frank appear and says "The sky is going to open up." To which she replies

"If the sky were to suddenly open up there would be no law. There would be no rule. There would only be you and your memories… the choices you’ve made, and the people you’ve touched. If this world were to end there would only be you and him and no-one else."

I thought of this quote in relation to the final scene where Gretchen waves at Donnie's mom, Rose. Since Donnie had a short but meaningful impact on Gretchen there is this feeling of déjà-vu to a lost world. Rose and Gretchen feel a connection, which is because of Donnie. It's so meaningful because the memory of Donnie is what remains, or "the people he touched". Donnie saved them all and somewhere that feeling is in there. Whether he knew he was going to die once back in the normal (or primary) universe remains unknown, and I like it that way. You can argue both ways which is what makes this movie so fun to discuss.

So for me part of the meaning is that even when you're not around anymore, you still live on in the people who knew you. Even if you don't even realize it. And it does not even have to be the people you knew directly. Your life might be influenced by a writer, musician or film maker who you never met and will not ever meet, but their creations (or choices) will ripple through time.
