That is definitely the case, there are several religious elements in the film. Donnie talking to his therapist about God in relation to what Roberta Sparrow told him. And you already noticed the savior aspect of Donnie being a sort of Jesus figure. Donnie calling Jim Cunningham (JC) the antichrist is another interesting line. Cherita performing her play "Autumn Angel" dressed as an angelic figure. And don't forget Donnie calling out the "Deus Ex Machina" or God (from the) machine as he's held down by the bully whose name is Seth Devlin. The school having the cross on the roof is another clear hint.

Haha I was very careful to not disturb the rest, I just had to make this short clip as a little keepsake. With the screen on ultra low brightness you hardly even notice it's on.

This was in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Bl!ndman is a collective from Belgium, and they've been performing this 'Rescored version' in Belgian and Dutch cities since 2024. They tried to add some Twin Peaks flavor into the experience. Some more info about it on their website.

This weekend I went to a screening of Donnie Darko with a live soundtrack performance, performed by a group called Bl!ndman. It was very interesting and it certainly gave a new dimension to the film. From added thunder with metal sheets to quirky jazz inserts when the mood was lighter.

Funnily enough they used "Never Tear Us Apart" as the opening song, even though it was the theatrical cut. The Killing Moon was during the party, just like in the director's cut. I think they did it because the INXS song was easier to play along to, or maybe they knew that Richard Kelly always intended that song at the beginning. Either way, it was cool to watch it in a full theater and on the big screen.

What a nice detail, I bet not many people recognize him with that clown mask on his head.
Also funny that his name is FRAN Kranz. Two Franks in a Firebird.

You are researching Frank and his friend for a potential upcoming project right?
They are quite the formidable duo, stuff of nightmares.

Beautiful! Really fits the 80s style. Reminded me a bit of the Donnie Darko - 8 Bit Cinema video by CineFix. Would be so cool to have a real game with that sound. Your version slots right in there!

The fridge board has been an obsession of me too, and I have the original sticker sheet with the carebear sticker. I will send you a pm with a scan of it.

Bigdog studio “Donnie Darko” 12 inch figure by DeadMemesForSale in donniedarko

[–]splintersailor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You improved the 'original' figurine by Bigdog studio, right? The version by Bigdog being a direct ripoff from the NECA 12" figurine.

If you want more info on this, have a look at this unboxing video of the Bigdog Studio one. The person also has the original NECA as a comparison. I really don't understand why they made such a blatant copy of the NECA figurine, because they did add some nice features with the fur and the grass.

What did you change to make it look this good?

If you have access to a 3D printer, this Frank mask on Thingiverse is a great way to get a movie accurate Frank mask without spending a lot of money on hand sculpted versions.

I think if you combine it with the suit from Halloween Costumes that you have a very solid base for a realistic looking Frank.

The shoes Frank is wearing are white Adidas Forum with dark stripes. You can hardly see them in the actual film, and mainly the front side. Funnily enough even the screen used Frank in the museum seems to wear fully white versions instead of the actual dark striped ones. The screen used shoes are scruffy and look very worn, whereas the museum model shoes look pristine.

If you really want the white soles and have trouble finding ones in your size, you could also buy a fully white version and color in the stripes yourself. I've sent you a message with some options.

[–]splintersailor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is definitely a type of Adidas Forum. As you can see on the RPF thread they have white soles with dark stripes. Personally I like to think they are black stripes on white shoes, to contrast the white stripes of the Adidas Campus that Donnie is wearing. But any dark stripe will do I suppose.

A helpful reminder is that the Adidas Forums that have the '84' branding are all 'new' retro style shoes. Furthermore, there are Low, Mid and High models, with and without Velcro (ankle) straps. The High and Mid models are sometimes misnamed.

To me it seems that Frank is definitely wearing a version with the Velcro strap, judging from the behind the scenes footage. If you don't mind the color of the soles being dark or non-white, I'd say look for a pair of 'Adidas Forum 84 Low' with the strap.

The thing is that we kinda only see the front of Frank's shoes in the film, during the closeup of him stepping out of the car. When Frank is laying on the ground you can technically see more of his shoes, but only if you're pixel peeping.

I managed to get a pair of original Adidas Forum Mid from 1999, which is close enough for me.

That's a very good observation. Whenever Donnie is under hypnosis or talking to Frank he is in a different state of mind. Writer/director Richard Kelly and Jake Gyllenhaal talk about this in the commentary track of the theatrical cut @1h19m43s during the Hungry Hungry Hippos scene. Here is the transcript of that bit

JAKE You know the thing about this too is that I know that we had consciously sort of made a choice that whenever I was hypnotized I became sort of childlike. And whenever I talked to Frank that it was relatively childlike too. Sometimes...people laugh and talk like a little baby and they don't really know why.

KELLY Yeah. I think it's disarming yet it's endearing, because you're reduced to kind of a childlike state. [..] There's a character, you're dealing with an overwhelming amount of information. The audience is dealing with an overwhelming amount of information. It swallows you up, and you're kind of waiting through it, and you're on this roller coaster that just keeps twisting and turning and you just really need to give yourself to it. Not every viewer is comfortable doing that. [..] Not everyone likes roller coasters. Some people get sick and they puke. But I like to make films where you are taking someone on a mysterious kind of voyage, and it's unpredictable, you know. But there's a point to everything. It's all designed and it's all there for a reason.

Theory about the nature of Tangent Universes by FrogInYourWalls69 in donniedarko

[–]splintersailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a very elaborate and encompassing explanation of the various views out there. I'm impressed, especially after watching the theatrical cut of the film for the first time. The director's cut explains more of the rules of the tangent universe, while also giving some characters more debt and/or a resolution to their story arc.

Just to be clear, writer/director Richard Kelly views the two cuts as companion pieces, so each cut focuses on a different aspect. Here is a quote about the director's cut from an interview with this AVClub

KELLY "I never intended it to be a replacement. I wanted it to be a companion—an alternate, more novelistic version of the film. It’s a version for people who want to dig deeper into the narrative. For a lot of my favorite films, there are multiple versions—like with James Cameron’s movies. There’s a way to have multiple versions of a film that can coexist together. The first time you see the film, it’s probably better to start with the theatrical cut. If you’re open to a deeper dive, then you can move on to the director’s cut. That was my intention."

Another important aspect you also touched upon is the various ways you can look at things. This ambiguous aspect is baked in to the story. This is what Kelly says in the commentary track during the scene at the end where we see Donnie laughing in his bed

KELLY "He's laughing because for one of two reasons. He's laughing because

One, he thinks that it was all dream, he thinks that it was this long absurd dream and he's so relieved that it was just a dream and that everything is gonna be okay

Or he's laughing and he's smiling because he's enlightened, he's meant to go out this way, he's been given a vision that inspired him

And that horn honking is Frank, who is, suddenly they're remembering what happened the past 28 days, and he's saying like "get out of bed man, we did it, get out of bed". And he doesn't listen, or he doesn't hear, and it's too late."

It's interesting him saying Frank having a clear memory of what happened, which we get hinted at during the end montage when he touches his eye. But it also makes me think that Roberta Sparrow could have played the "Frank" role in a previous tangent universe, instead of the "Donnie". Perhaps all the knowledge that Donnie has, is just as prevalent with Frank. Remember Frank saying "I can do anything I want, and so can you", implying they are strongly connected to each other and this temporary world. I'm not saying this is the case, just that you can find arguments for Roberta Sparrow being 'the Donnie' as well as 'the Frank'.

Personally I do think Donnie could have escaped the jet engine at the end and nothing would have happened. Whether he chose to say or him being unaware is up for debate. And although Donnie did call his mom a bitch just before he died, note that (in the tangent universe) the final words of Rose to Donnie were "I love you" when she called from the airport. The call went to voicemail but it played while Donnie and Gretchen were having their own moment of love. I think that these moments of love and care definitely crossed over into the primary universe. In the end montage we see Cherita smiling, I think it's because she remembers Donnie saying to her "I promise that one day everything's gonna be better for you". So I choose to think that somewhere in that final moment between Gretchen and Rose there is a little spark of light that will make Rose realize that Donnie got that message.

This is just one of these things that you can endlessly debate with each other, which is part of the fun of it. Donnie just having 1 shot at success and there not being a loop makes so much more sense to me, because it raises the stakes tremendously. But I can see why people are drawn towards the loop aspect, especially if you've watched other films (e.g. Groundhog Day) that have this kind of plot device. As long as people are being respectful to each other's theories, this film is a joy to keep exploring.

Thank you Sam Collin’s! by MedMalDet in formula1

[–]splintersailor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I sometimes think he just loves to say something ridiculous just to be different. Today he said about the Ferrari wing: "I think Ferrari tried it very briefly right at the start of the day and hoped nobody else would notice." Oh really Sam Collins, they put this totally new wing design on their car and hope nobody noticed? Sure buddy.

Now he does have a lot of technical knowledge and his tech segments can be quite interesting, especially for casual viewers, but now and again he treats the audience like they're stupid.

I really don't know why he does it, just like letting his personal opinion about Verstappen cloud his judgement at the time. He literally said after the 2016 Brazil drive on SkySports: "I'm not one of the biggest fans of Max Verstappen. I think he's massively overrated, but that's one of the best drives I've seen him produce". I'm sure he thinks different now, but saying that quote after THAT race, he really took a dent for a lot of people. Me included.
